EXCLUSIVE: Sandy Munro on Tesla and the Future of EVs

  • After driving my Tesla Model Y 5,700 miles round trip for the largest Tesla event of the year, I had the Exclusive opportunity to interview Sandy Munro. Right before the Tesla California Takeover event began, Sandy and I sat down to talk about Tesla and the electric future.
    During out discussion, Sandy talked about Tesla, how Elon Musk has shaken up the industry, how the industry is changing, and what our future winners and losers may look like. Engineering is clearly on Sandy's mind when it comes to the things that Tesla is doing to shake up the industry, and his thoughts on the topic are directed towards legacy auto.
    Not only was the 4680 a great discussion point, and the implications it has on the industry, but Sandy also talked about his thoughts on the misrepresentation of EV's that seems to be prevalent in media. Sandy got a little flustered when talking about the likes of Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and others in the MSM.
    As we think about what this all means for the future, it certainly is clear that Sandy Munro and his team are focused on dedicating their time and resources to the perceived winners. Their research will continue to be extremely important to not only the Ford's of the world, but Tesla and other newcomers also.
    Thank you to the Munro team and Sandy for the time to conduct this interview. Be sure to check out Munro Live on TH-cam following this link: / munrolive

      I keep trying to convince everyone around me that EVs are greater and they are the future. but so many of those people just cannot change their viewpoints and mindset on them. It's so sad. I'm full-in on the EV future and it looks bright even if the adoption isn't as fast as it should be.

    • @themeach011
      @themeach011 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's actually not really holding anything back. There's not masses of unsellable evs sitting around. Every ev that is made right now sells quickly or was spoken for a year ago. The demand is there for far more than we can produce right now. History shows once u get past early adoption stage comes mass market appeal which we are just about to enter and then adoption goes exponential. I understand your thought and I used to feel the same way and I hate all the fud but the fud slingers have already lost they just don't know it yet. Actually a lot of them do know but fud gets a lot of clicks

    • @ReDiiKuLuS
      @ReDiiKuLuS ปีที่แล้ว

      @@themeach011 that’s not quite true. It may be for Tesla specifically, but other manufacturers actually do have some trouble selling their EVs. For example, I’ve seen a lot of Ford dealers who have whole rows of Mustang Mach E.

    • @themeach011
      @themeach011 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ReDiiKuLuS good points! Although we aren't really used to seeing dealers have inventory recently historically it's pretty normal and desirable for dealers to have some inventory and selection for customers.

    Very interesting interview. Automotive engineering sort of brought me into the world. Born in Dagenham U.K. Dad and grandad both worked at Ford. Moved to northwest Merseyside and I did a seven year stint on production lines at Halewood. I’ve driven a few cars in my time and now have a Tesla model Y. Amazing just amazing and still shake my head at those resisting change much like horses before ICE. Great to have people like Sandy Elon and you guys around. Keep the faith👍

    I have the distinct pleasure of being able to say that Sandy is both a colleague and a friend. We met in 1985 when I was a young and innovative engineer just out of Honda and Sandy was fresh out of Ford making his way leading Design for Manufacturing and Assembly in the automotive and other industries. He was as feisty and outspoken then as he is now. He was brilliant then and even more now. To put (Sandy) Munro and Associates together with Elon to create Tesla's "Model T" or "VW Bug" would be a world-changer. Sandy spoke to that in this interview. Imagine a Sandy/Elon version of "The People's Electric Car". That would change the world forever for the good.

    Yes, he touched a hot button ;) And it's my hot button too because the first question I get from someone asking me how I like my EV is "how far can you drive before charging up?". We never have asked that question of ICE cars because we don't usually drive long road trips so why put it at the top of the fears for EVs? I've done almost 6K miles on 6 road trips of 400 to 1100 miles each with no problem charging along the way. And that's over I40 through Mojave and Arizona and State 6 and I80 through Utah and Nevada. Go get 'em Sandy. Cheers and drive safely.

    It was really interesting to hear this interview with mr. Munro and his perspectives on the future for EV’s. I live in Norway and as many know, here EV’s are completely taking over the car market. Almost a 100% of all new cars sold, are EV`s. And I don’t think it’s because Norwegians are more concerned about the environment, the government have supported the change through taxation benefits on EV`s., so this has been a majore reason. And, eventually, Norwegians now experiences how much cheaper it is to own and drive an electrical vehicle because of the high prices on fuel. Personally, I bought my first electric car in 2014, a Nissan Leaf. Later a model 3 in 2018, and eventually a model Y (made in China) in September 2021. I am now 70 years old, and I think I’m really lucky to experience these changes in the car industry and also the good impact that I think (and hope) it will have on the future and the changes we need to do for this beloved planet we all live on.

    So clever interpretation of what's happening. Sandy has his the 2 feet on the ground yet the head in the future. His mindset : KISS. Life is simple, progress is simple to understand, but plenty of people make it complicated, plenty are dumb, plenty believe to know based on what has been done up to now, and are incapable to foresee the future

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was Sandy's input on early Model 3 chassis assembly that led to Elon's team to develop giga casting and tremendous cost savings.

    Thank you for sharing with us one of your many experiences. The background is stunning with all the red and shimmering LED floral, so artistic. I look forward to more facts about the innovation of engineering and business marketing combined into a product like Tesla and battery technology as a complete product with charging stations infrastructure all the way to maintenance and repair. Keep up the good work. . .
