I noticed this has been been posted 4 years ago and we'll I'm just now seeing it and I have a question about the diffusers. If your diffuser didn't protrude from the face of the board would that help with the bleed over and lower your overall cost?

Awesome! I wish I had one of these as a kid for pickup games
Another thing you could do to brighten up the team names/hide the unlit bulbs is have a horizontal separator between the team names and numbers. More of the light from the strip would be reflected up and away from the numbers

Oh, this does bring some memories, when back in the day I had this project (just on a circuit simulator, all software, no actual hardware other than the pc itself) where we could do whatever as long as it met some goals. As a part of it, I end up with an array of, I think, eight symbols (i.e., letters, numbers) but, instead of a 3x5, they were sixteen segment displays each. I had to code them myself, solving a Karnaugh map for each letter, map and extra symbol (I guess I did something around 40 of them total).
The idea was more or less the same as here, but at lower level (logic gates, etc., instead of programming).
These projects really make me want to go and make something... I don't know what, but something.

Bob, I have a tool that works wonderfully for exactly the repetitive hole drilling. it's kind of a "portable drill press". it's called a Portalign and it attaches a hand drill to make the job easier. if you search "Portalign", you'll find several different drill guides like it. they even have depth stops. Hope this helps!

Hey I'm not Bob and I like the stuff Bob makes! And I love this one!
I have two small variations in mind:
    1) make the LED "cups" shape transition from round to square to get a "pixel" look. it might be the final nerdy touch (you already put in 3d print, Bluetooth, arduino, it's more than enough for an average nerd!)
    2) use plexiglass bars for the LED instead of cups. you should have a polished side surface to act as a light guide, polished bottom face (LED side) and textured front face. this works for sure if LED and light guide size are roughly the same, as in LEDs in user interfaces. So you might consider building a more compact version of the board reusing your current LEDs.

I'm about to embark on building my own version of this over the weekend. Have the electronics figured out for my customization. What's I'd love to know that are some more details about the woodworking. Any chance you can get us the layout/spacing of the circles?
I'm forgoing BT and using arcade buttons for ease of use by others during an actual sporting event. Making second box that can be used with (quick connect, already wired) to display countdown clock. Will have start/stop and potentiometer to set the time.
Would love to know the spacing, will help a lot!

Excellent project Bob, I've been thinking about something like this for my nieces and nephews and their new basketball court.
For those that don't want to wire up 15 LEDs, 7 segment displays are easy to understand. You could probably find some that the right size, or make your own and program it in a similar way to Bob's.

Awesome project. I would love to make one of these for my school. Would you be able to do another video where you modified it to have button controls on the back of the board? Ours would sit on the scorers table and it would be much more reliable if there were just physical buttons on the back of the scoreboard. I might be able to figure it out too, but it would take some research!!

To have an even bigger contrast and a more pleaseruable expericene for the viewers u can have a yellow color to make up the numbers but the lights that would be "off" could instead shine purple which is a contrast color to yellow. Just an idea that I thought of. Ur insane at making ideas come to real life, gj man.

I Like To Make Stuff Just thought of a question. Thinking making a version of yours for backyard games, like bags/cornhole.
How long do you think the battery will really last powering the uno and all the LEDs?

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Depends on the battery and load (number of LEDs) really, but if you have a decently sized LiPo, it'd work for a couple of hours probably.

    • @ericbartha6313
      @ericbartha6313 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I Like To Make Stuff I'd probably use the same number of LEDs, so a few hours wouldn't be bad, but maybe I'll play with some other options though. On a nice summer day, a few hours can go really quick!

Ideally I'd like to have a small Bluetooth controller/remote (not my iPhone) that I can clip on the net. 4 buttons (Home up/down & Away up/down). Do you know of any controller (about the size of a car remote starter) that could achieve this?

Hello! Is it possible to make compatible your design with an arduino board + bluetooth module or with an ESP32?

Any chance you could do an update on the arduino/app electronic side of things. Great project

Bob, another great project! I appreciate that you add some of the stuff that didn't work out too. There's plenty to be learned there as well. Could you add a link to the wiring harness connector kit? It the one where you soldered the pins onto the bare wire and then pushed them into the plastic harness. I'm searching on Amazon and haven't found that kit yet. Thanks!

I was wondering. Could you have used a dark film gel over the lenses to keep them dark until they light up, or would that not work?

If you could make a similar project with timer list for sports, it would be great. 10 min warm up counts down, then starts second timer to stretch etc. similar things are used in 7 min workouts, crossfit, basically any time based sport. You can buy those timers but they are not cheap and i believe this would be another good project to use arduino from intel. And i believe it would interest many people too. Anyway, thanks for the video, i love watching them and learning from your mistakes and creative process.

    great project and video!
this sponsorship is the kind i like because we learn something new, the sponsorship makes sense and it fits your channel and the project!
keep on doing things like that!

Hey Bob, just wondering about how it would look if the off LEDs were actually red or another contrasting color, since the LEDs are RGB. Very nice result!

Could you connect that to a say score keeping app that keeps score of like MLB, NBA, NHL games in real time?

So do you have digital plans for this project? or the overall dimensions of the board?

Really, really nice. It would be great to make a smaller one, maybe using 5mm LEDs (without any diffusers).

Wondering if you could some type of display that would allow the hame to be changed on the score board?

Great work! Actually in the process of making one of our own. Although instead of using the arduino 101 we are just implementing simple buttons with the arduino uno. Any guidance on how to convert this code form using a bluetooth library to a simple buttons?

You could make a wooden collet to be larger in diameter than back of drill . Collet slips between drill and drill bit secured behind drill head. That way it stops exactly at your wooden spacer stop mechanically

Love this. Thanks for sharing. I think I would need a score board for Cricket… it would use 3 characters . 000 and can use Color to differentiate between runs and wickets and overs played.. and the info would be flashed in sequence. Cricket is a game that stops after every ball, a bit like baseball, so enough time for ppl to watch it for a few seconds. 👍

great video. i wish i had a need for one, might have to invent something ;)
one question, does the back light for the names not bleed through the off LEDs? could be solved with a partition below the names on the back maybe.

Thanks! No, I don't think that's really a concern. The light doesn't really have a way to get to the diffuser caps.
