I’m glad that Bill tells the story about how he felt or what or why he felt it when he saw his kid for the first time because this is actually a very common experience for a lot of people as the reality hits us in different ways. It’s important that people don’t internalize this one instance in their lives as some character flaw that implies something much bigger like the general anxiety of “something must be wrong with me” as a permanence.
I had that same experience with my daughter. I was told I was going to have this overwhelming sense of love for my little girl. When my daughter was born and everything was fine, I was happy, and I couldn't stop smiling for at least an hour that my little girl was born. But the overwhelming feel of love, I didn't get that straight away. I did wonder if something was wrong with me. But man oh man oh man, 16 months later and I don't think I could love my little girl enough, that it's amazing to me just how much love I have for her, and how it continues to grow every day.
