  • The Easiest Way To Sharpen Knives. Keeping your knife sharp may seem like a daunting task. There are dozens of different techniques and tools to get the job done. Simplicity though, proves to be one of the best practices! The goal when sharpening a knife is to simply make the knife sharp. This is done by removing metal from the edge of the dull blade. Blades become dull due to, on a micro level, the metal rolling over. As we sharpen the blade we remove that rolled metal leaving behind a nice clean crisp edge.

A good tip if you are new to knife sharpening is to use a permanent marker to colour in the edge. Then when you sharpen it makes it clear where you are removing metal.

I love how you flipped this around, bringing the stone to the knife, to help us understand how to maintain the grind angle. All the other tutorials I've seen or been taught were about trying to somehow "envision the angle" as I brought the knife to the stone which never worked for me and undermined my confidence in the technique as a beginner. Thanks for sharing this innovative, clear, and simple method to do this correctly.

I really like how you hold the knife and stone so you can see the gap. However, you may want to mention that not all knifes have a single grind. For example blades that are made from thinner stock than the one you use in the video, like Swiss army knives, will have a primary grind of around 15 dps which extends 1/4 or 1/2 the way towards the spine of the blade, and then a secondary grind, which only extends a couple of millimeters from the edge, of 20-25 dps. This means that when you 'close the gap' your stone is resting on the primary bevel and won't remove any metal from the secondary bevel. It could be quite frustrating for someone to apply your great technique only to find that their knife never seems to get any sharper.

I think it’s hilarious that every time someone puts out a video on how to sharpen a knife, it’s a Scandi grind. The easiest grind to sharpen. Show how to field sharpen a convex or hollow grind with no obvious bevel to use as a guide. That would be a big help for people starting off in Bushcrafting. Not all knives are scandi.

I'm sure it has already been said in the previous comments but this technique for finding the edge angle only works for a Scandi grind on a knife such as a Mora or other Scandi knives. If your knife has a convex grind, secondary bevel or micro bevel it is an entirely different story to maintaing the correct angle on the edge.

Video has over 550 thumbs down votes for good reason (whereas the 26,000 people who liked it are comin’ from those who probably never sharpened/never heard of a micro bevel and are almost certainly gonna destroy their pocketknives and/or kitchen knives with this guy’s technique). I will admit the guy does have a good screen presence, at least.

Absolutely agree with the points on this video. Use the factory bevels as your angle guide. Of course this is a scandi grind mora which is probably the easiest knife in the world to sharpen because of the massive wedge that are the bevels. I’d easily sharpen a Mora in the field but I’d rather wait till I get home to sharpen a Buck 110 because of the smaller bevel. I like my Lansky sharpening kit for everything that isn’t a scandi grind and prefer just any type of flat stone for Scandis. My Lansky kit might be the best bang for the buck product I’ve ever purchased. One kit countless sharpenings of just about everything I can get my hands on.

Wow, best knife sharpening methodology I've ever seen for stone work! The other useful tips I could add is to wear a solid leather belt (not two halves stitched together, they fall apart easily) so you can use it to "strop" or polish the edge further after you stone it to get it even sharper.
More importantly though, START with better blade to begin with! One like that amazing Morakniv/Mora you have that's super affordable but sharp as HECK! The "best" knives are ones made from a harder "high Carbon Steel" vs any type of Stainless, which is so much softer metal it sucks at holding an edge and will never get NEAR as sharp as a high Carbon blade! Look at the "Rockwell Hardness" or RH to see how the blade material compares. A higher RH like 58 or higher (like that Morakniv 511 has) will get sharper and stay sharper 3-4X longer than Stainless. But it also takes longer to get an edge on initially or if you let it get too far gone.
A high Carbon blade will tend to rust easy though IF you don't take care of it! You want to either polish them to a mirror finish (small pits is where rust forms first) and keep them polished up, use a metal bluing finish, or put another coating on the blade like pure Carnauba or Bee's wax. If you can help it, you NEVER want to put it back in the sheath wet! Especially a leather sheath because it holds moisture... Dry it off really well first, or clean it up by the end of the day. Let it air dry out of the sheath and dry the sheath out good too.

Thank you. All my knives are dull. I tried to sharpen them and failed so I just started to imagine the guy who used to drive through the neighborhood sharpening knives. The good old days.

Another important tip. Many times the thickness of the blade is so thick that the angle to hold the knife "to close the gap that you talk about", becomes so severe you won't be able to get a sharp lasting edge. You can correct this quickly with a few quick passes on a bench or belt grinder etc. and then finish with your stone followed by a honing steel. Grind the knife in fairly swift strokes avoiding excessive heat temper damage. Experienced from several years using knives daily in a meat packing house.
