    Thanks for the shout-out, and I was glad to help. I have read elsewhere that the original paddle controllers will work with this system, you can get them on eBay for fairly cheap. I just haven't gotten around to ordering a set.

    • @PattonPlays
      @PattonPlays  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh hey! I appreciate your help from before. There's a retro game store about an hour and a half away from me. I was thinking of going there and seeing if I could pick up some original 2600 and Genesis controllers to test with it.

      Patton Plays I'm majorly interested to know if the X works okay or not with original 2600 paddles, can you let us know / do a video of you manage to get some to test it with?

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a snob about those paddle games--there are some OK substitutes, like trackballs or computer trackpads, but playing them with a joystick is just not right.
      The Flashback collections for modern consoles allow you to play them with analog sticks, and there are a number of control settings for the mapping, but it still just doesn't quite do it.

    I picked one of these up at Sam's Club last year and love it. People give AtGames crap, but when it comes to their Atari systems, they keep improving, the X being their best one by far.

    I believe that version of Space Invaders is like a ported Arcade Deluxe version or something. I agree with you! The Atari 2600 version of Space Invaders is AWESOME, and I too strongly prefer to play that version of the game. I love the classic 2600 graphics on that one.

    The 2600 was the first system we played at my house, though one of my cousins had one of those dedicated "pong" type machines you hooked up to your tv.Remember playing so many great gamers on that system. My favorites were the Activision library, almost everything they made was great, plus Demon Attack from Imagic and Ms Pacman.

    • @PattonPlays
      @PattonPlays  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. I remember my dad borrowed it from his friend and I loved it.

  • @sherekhangamedev
    @sherekhangamedev 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    They keep improving and deliver, indeed.
    That Jaws reference whahahahaha, thanks mate for your sense of humor.
    It's weird, the 2600 was my first contact on my childhood, on a neighborhood house, but I ended obtaining a micro pc Atari XE with more complex games like Flight Simulator and the option to use games on tape, and there was some really good games, some post 2600 classics too like DigDug, or Lode Runner, Montezuma's Revenge, Jungle King, Donkey Kong Jr., also I remember games like Rambo Blade, Penguin Adventure and a really cool F1 game (with the boxes stop and all) , Saxon and many many more, and of course the classics like Pitfall, Frogger, Missile Command, lol I also got the nefarious E. T. (Not always all is chocolat rain)
    But even with all that, what marked my childhood, and was a blast was the NES Challenge Set and the TMNT 3 game. Oh man, so wonderful times, full of magic.
    And I say weird because my first impression wasn't my more attached one (and was a really good and improved one thanks to the XE), but anyways it helped me like the proverbial magic door to the Narina of Video Games.
    Thanks for this review Patt.
    Take care.

    • @PattonPlays
      @PattonPlays  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! I think my favorite thing about the 2600 was fun it was with the simplicity of the games. You really don't need a lot to create a fun game and sometimes I think companies nowadays get distracted by so much and forget to make their games "fun".

    ATGames has only released Atari Flashbacks since 2011, they took over with the 3. The 2 was a true Atari 2600 (literal hardware copy with possible cartridge port mod), and the 1 was a Atari 7800 mini but they were made by Legacy Engineering.

    I like the style of this Atari flashback x but the Atari flashback 9 is the one to get it has the SD slot for adding more games (bin format) and the paddle issue has been solved by buying a set of custom paddles from eBay also another option would be the Sams club legend's flashback 2019 it plays (a26 format) Atari ROMs off the SD card

    It definitely looks more like a six-switch 2600 than any of the earlier Flashbacks, but, hmm, no BW/color switch. There are actually a few games that did something unusual with that switch for game control--I suppose you couldn't play them on this hardware...
    (I'm one of the weirdos who would be disappointed by the inclusion of the arcade Space Invaders instead of the 2600 version. I know Taito seems to prefer people to port the original, but as a kid who grew up playing the 2600, to me the very different-looking 2600 Space Invaders is the iconic one. And it's THE game that made the console a megahit, so it feels odd to leave it out of a collection.)

    • @PattonPlays
      @PattonPlays  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree, I would have preferred the Atari 2600 to keep with the aesthetic of the system. AtGames actually just recently partnered with TAITO in January, so maybe future releases will allow for it!

    I was just out of high school when I saw one of these on display for try-out at Sears. It was way ahead of anything else on the consumer market at the time, and the cartridges added to the attraction. However, I found myself quickly bored with the simple games and blocky graphics. Arcade video games were much more entertaining.

      @@PattonPlays It they can add all the modern tech like HDMI, USB and all then a lousy 24 pin edge connector would be trivial. Now, if the circuit has an actual data and address bus of the original, than this should be cake..but I'm not thinking that is the case. This is probably an ASIC where all the 2600 parts are internal or not set up as the original. One of the Flashbacks did have the ability to add one in if I recall correctly. I believe it was the Flashback two....hold on.... yes.... Atari Museum has the mod... I don't know if this link will show up but.... www.atarimuseum.com/fb2hacks/

    No controller lag is huge!!! On the Atari Flashback 8 Gold, and I'm sorry to say that there's about a fifth of a second lag on both wireless AND corded controllers for that system. It's small enough not to notice if you're not looking for it, but big enough to make some games really frustrating and other games virtually unplayable. I didn't even notice it until I bought an original 7800 ProSystem and starting buying some of my favorite games on cart that I already had on the Flashback (didn't want to have to switch back and forth between consoles). To my surprise, a lot of games just played better on the original hardware! Certain games, like River Raid and Kaboom! straight up sucked on the Flashback 8 Gold, but are brilliant on original hardware. Other games like Gravitar and Adventure didn't seem to suffer all that much with the very slight controller lag. I'm glad that ATGames finally straightened that out!

I tend to use them more for ornaments and to give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside about my childhood (although these games are a similar age or older than me). It is not really until the NES that I can actually play them well and remember them properly.

And it is too bad that (without modding) that they don't put the original 2600 Space invaders on this, as it's hard to explain over the phone, long distance to an uncle how to flash his "Tari game" (yes I said Tari), to add those roms onto it. I'm guessing it might be a rights issue? Since these are all actually licensed, they likely had to get Taito's permission, and Taito is greatly fond of their version over Atari's. The Flashback Classic console collections (also from AtGames) don't have any games with third-party licenses at all, so Space Invaders is completely missing from them, which seems like a huge omission.

    Thanks in advance!

      UPDATE:
      I can confirm that the 2600 joystick extender cables on Amazon are 100% compatible with the Flashback X. The extra 10 ft per joystick allows perfect gaming distance from your TV. I only wish I could say the same thing for the 2600 paddle controllers. YES, they will work, but are very glitchy and not as responsive as one would want them to be. So games like Kaboom, Warlords, Oink etc are a nightmare to use them on.
      Fingers crossed that actual Flashback X compatible paddle controllers are released.

    So if you have the original controllers , it seems they would work on this? And wondering if you need both sets of paddles , meaning tennis paddles and racing paddles, or would the double paddles work for everything. The gameplay and sound looks great. Might have to get one.

    • @PattonPlays
      @PattonPlays  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the original controllers should work. As to what degree I don't know yet. Me and Cass might take a trip next weekend to a retro game store and I can try to pick some stuff up.

      The original driving paddles were definitely different, but to be honest, I can't recall any game other than Indy 500 supporting them. I believe there was a homebrew game or two made to, but not any other official releases that I know of. In theory, the regular paddles wouldn't work, because they only have about 270 degress of travel. The driving controllers are free spinning.

    The two things I find interesting about this console are that it’s the best designed AtGames Flashback yet, *but* also the scarcest one and the one released with almost no attention. The thing has been available for at least three months. I just learned of it a week ago. It’s not in stores at all, contrary to seeing all of its predecessors everywhere in the past. Apparently there is no paddle support for it, either, from what I hear. Original paddles don’t register on it and AtGames hasn’t produced any that work for it.

      The Flashback X is the latest version. If you get the deluxe version, which is sold at Sam's Club, you get 120 games. Also, with a firmware upgrade, you can add OTG support to hook a USB drive up and add more games, no need for an SD card.
