Singapore is like the Switzerland of Asia. Super rich and neutral. Being a tiny country, you've got to maintain neutrality and good relations with everyone. It's one of the few countries in the world that has good relations with China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, North Korea, South Korea, and the USA. Hence, Singapore is a suitable neutral ground to host top level diplomacy meetings. The most famous recent one being Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump meeting at Singapore. China and Taiwan's presidents have also both met at Singapore.
Switzerland is much more safe in geological terms - in the middle of alps, with nuclear bunkers, its a fort. Singapore is an island that can be attacked from each side and one tsunami wipes it off.
@@josexavier1685 The lower part of South China Sea area (where Singapore is) is geologically stable and free from cyclones and tsunamis. Indonesia and Philippines act as shields against those natural disasters. Singapore knows its vulnerability as a small island nation. This is why it has mandatory military conscription for men, and ensure it has the strongest / most advanced navy, air force, and air defence systems. What they lack in numbers, they make up for in quality. But Singapore need not worry about war with its immediate neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia. They have strong ties with each other and everyone would lose out in a military conflict. Similar sort of relationship like in Switzerland with France and Germany. The ASEAN region is now getting more united due to China's encroachment into the South China Sea. Israel too, is in a similar situation, where it has military conscription and the most advanced weaponry to make up for it being surrounded by larger countries. The difference compared to Singapore and Switzerland, is that the surrounding countries are actually hostile with a history of wars since its existence.

6:42 the reason why "singapura" means "lion city" is because the first person who discovered the island saw a lion that look epic so the guy who found the island named it "singapura"
The name Singapura is derived from Sanskrit meaning "Lion City".Singa comes from the Sanskrit word siṃha, which means "lion", and pūra means "city" in Sanskrit.
That "5 fear" is so on point. There was a saying in Singapore, "if no one do it, I must not do. If someone do it, I must do it no matter what it takes"
@@hondasuzuki6345 To be fair, island state and city state are not officially used terms. So, their definition is very vague, which makes it difficult to categorise.
When I told my Singaporean friends that I am going to Singapore with the other half (who is Singaporean) for the first time, they counted the number of meals I could eat (apparently 12 in 3 days) and made a list of 'to go' places. They did not include a single attraction, just food places.
Hahahah.. Food is very important to Asians, particularly the Chinese. There's food for every social event, even family gathering. The English socialise through beers (meet up for a drink); we socialise through for (meet up to "makan") .
@@Qiyunwu Very true, everything you see in a tourist-y area in Singapore is designed to get tourists to spend money, better off eating at a hawker centre

As a Singaporean and a long time viewer of this channel, I've been looking forward to this episode since a long time ago! The facts and cultures were well researched and appropriately presented. The delicate balance of ethnic groups, nature vs urban and order vs freedom are well presented too. There were a few minor mistakes though. At 1:56, the northeast Island is the military island named pulau tekong, not the South. The exchange rate with the Malaysian ringgit is approximately 3:1 right now and we often joked that the stuff there is 3 times cheaper, not 4 times. At 27:12, Malaysians stay in Malaysia and they often come to Singapore. Not malays specifically. Being both ethnically diverse nations, our people are known by our citizenship, and not our race. For example, I am a Singaporean Chinese, and not just known as a Chinese. We do still have issues of our own despite how well we're doing. We have a high income disparity, a pressure cooker education and work system, an aging population, a huge percentage of foreigners, limited freedom of speech, and being the most expensive country to live in.
It was first known as Pulau Ujong (Island at the end) or Puloucong (to chinese traders), then Temasek (Sea Town) or Danmaxi (to chinese traders) before becoming Singapura (Lion City) & of course the British had issues with pronunciation & it becomes SingaPORE
Im from Malaysia i hear old Sentosa island once called Pulau Belakang Mati means Back Death Island or Back stabbed island, that really badass name for the island

@@scintillam_dei I live in Scotland (I'm not Scottish but a Polish immigrant) and nobody I met spoken Scottish Gaelic only a mix of English and Scots. I find it pointless the the Scottish parliament (which is autonomous to the UK parliament) for every street sign and everything else to be in English & Scottish Gaelic. Seriously even Primary (Elementary in USA) & Secondary (High Schools) Schools I went to never taught me Scottish Gaelic because everything was in English and the teachers spoken a bit in Scots. What's wrong Scotland? Why aren't your children being taught your native language just English?
@@scintillam_dei I heard people in Ireland speak more English than Irish Gaelic and the situation pretty much the same as Scotland but Ireland is actually fully independent. I might be wrong because I haven't visited but a Canadian TH-camr called JJ made a video on TH-cam where he visited and it was exactly as I typed so yeah the Irish still use English as a language more than Irish Gaelic so it's pointless to learn Irish Gaelic if nobody in everyday life does. I might be wrong but all the evidence point to it being true. Also I believe when Scotland & England united (which was by a Scottish king called James VI of Scotland or I of England or I of UK. Why a Scot when uniting his country and England made England more powerful than his own country I'll never know.) that the capital of the UK shouldn't be the same as England but somewhere at the border and be administered as a separate territory like District of Columbia in the USA or Australian Capital Territory in Australia. I believe the most important city on the border is Carlisle which is in England but Carlisle is in Cumbria county which has lots of Celtic heritage so it feels like a mix if Scotland and England more than just England. There maybe other better places on the border than Carlisle but it be a good compromise better than Edinburgh or London.
@@scintillam_dei I'd rather have countries have their national capital on the mainland. The only country in the world which has their capital on an island instead on the mainland is Equatorial Guinea which has a corrupt government, the citizens have no freedoms and has been building a purpose-built-capital on the mainland for so long and still nothing much has happened. Did you know the country's leader's son is a social media star and is also Vise President and his dad is soon going to be to old to President so in the future this guy that prefers to be a social media star than running will be running a country. I say this is a bad example for a country having a capital on a separate island rather than the mainland.

Men have to serve the military even if the do not want to but women a exempt, they can volunteer but they do not have to do the hard work if they do not want to. Equality :) Male privilege? lololol. I'm Indonesian and lived in Singapore for a few years. Such an amazing country but everything is super expensive.
We got lots of planes to Singapore from Indonesia. We visit each other countries alot, even some resort business in my town are owned by Singaporeans with their investment.
Singapore is the asia's super rich playground.
I went to Singapore once but I think everything I see there can I find back home in Indonesia. The ones related to food and natural reserves are even more fascinating back home. However, I think Singapore can be a great picture of what the earth look like when it’s almost fully urbanised. I think it’s futuristic and could be a great place for all nations to take care of their country’s natural reserves. Good job for their human resource for trying their best in developing the country.
bro its literally too small to even have a natural reserve...Singapore having one natural reserve should be enough, you cant compared it to Indonesia that's just not fair because you guys are effing big! Its like comparing durian with chilli or russia with hong kong....you can't compare both of them! I really don't understand why Indonesian always love to compare stuff especially when it comes to Malaysia and Singapore....stop comparing.

It’s hilarious that the only crime I hear about while living in Singapore (3 years) was when a bank near where I lived was robbed. The police let him do what he wanted and just watched him, fully aware of everything about the guy and as soon as he tried to leave the country they swooped in and arrested him. Insane
the police was like you can rob the place but don't escape the country then we he tried to escape the country the police were like ah boy i tell you don't escape singapore hiya so stupid
Singapore is too smol for even escaping so they let him free

I visited there once 9 years ago with Singapore Airlines. I agree with what was said about the airport. Possibly the best I have seen anywhere in the world. The airline is about the best I have traveled with as well. The food that was served on the flights was fantastic. Would definitely love to go back someday!

“People come to Singapore just for the food “ sums my trips to Singapore (tip : never eat at restaurants, eat at the hawker center, chose the long queue one,)
@Kok Bing Tan for me their pretty similar , I’ve been to Penang and their food is good too , I don’t know which hawker center you’re talking but I went the one near Gurney Plaza and it’s really good , the only thing that separates them it’s the price , Malaysia are way cheaper than singapore.
Kok Bing Tan have been in so many of this type of covos with malaysians, but I personally prefer sg ones, but we shldnt compare cause each country has their own twist to our culture, like food courts and the food that are the same dish, just with diff twists. we shld definitely appreciate each other food more instead of arguing, cause what is the point of it? food is food and its good :)
I went to a Hawker Center and ordered food from an Indian stand, ordered chilli pork... holy cow, that was spicy af

Deyo doladeyola lol if you wna talk about national service, talk about others too! like south korea,ect.... theres a reason for this decision, read up about it! having the entire population people born in a particular year isnt good for the economy at all. go ahead and read up about it, before being salty LOL. yes equality for that aspect isnt that great, but its just gna bring down the economy. plus the thread here is talking about “food” and you bring in national service, i dont see how it is related at all.

Man I miss going to Singapore.
Anyway I remember my first trip to Singapore. I tried practicing my English before the immigration booth at Changi... and the immigration officer talk to me in fluent Malay. Oh and my English skill is in by no means perfect, but I consider my skill is better than my dad. So we went to our hotel with a taxi and the taxi driver speaks with a full-blown singlish accent. don't worry we'll just build more land easy peasy
@@alphadisastroustie8853 You know how moist our land is, right? The entirety of Marina Bay is literally made of reclaimed land, meaning it's just dirt dumped in the sea.
@@YourLocalDoctor yeah I know the land is moist and the dirt is just dumped into the sea so we could just do that till around 20100 (at least that's what estimates say) and by that time if we're lucky the government would have bought some land in Antarctica
We already had plans for rising sea levels years ago
We do have sea walls planned. But honestly at this point I'm not going to be surprised if the government reveals we have mega seawalls like in Pacific Rim and they just rise out of the bay.
Visited my aunt and her family, back in 2000 when I was a kid, and ended up staying for the whole summer. Then, I returned the next summer cause I loved it so much. As a kid, I just fell in love with the country. How safe it was, so much to do, and people were so kind. I learnt how to use the chopsticks at the Chinatown Hawk Centre and still remember people's encouraging faces when I was struggling to use them. It was so safe that I would just take the MRT on my own at 10 years old and I'd go to Jurong Bird Park to chill at the man-made waterfalls(the mist was my fav part lol). I remember when my dad and I were at the airport about to leave, I was sobbing and begged my dad if I could stay for the entirety of the summer. My dad let me and I had to explain to the immigration officer why I decided to extend my stay. Told her I love her country lol That was good enough and after I got my extension, my aunt and uncle treated me for dinner at this revolving restaurant and had my first Peking duck. I remember seeing Sentosa and the Merlion from a distance and was so happy. It's been 20 years now since my first visit, I'd love to go back and visit again and see the new sites. The Marina Bay looks so different! My aunt lives in Canada now and I still remember the neighbourhood of their old apartments, Teban Gardens and Choa Chu Kang 😂
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ur story is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUUUUUUUUUUUTEEEEEEEE
Talking about Singapore, we Indonesiaan say, best VPN service.
LMAOOOOO TRUEEE
I don't understand what does Singapore have to do witth VPNs. Could you explain it to me?
Singapore's neighbours, although constitutionally De Jure secular states, have De Facto Islamic governments with some pretty ridiculous censorship regulations that they force on ISPs. For example, morality censorship means you can't access saucy erotic literature online, and Rockstar's servers were IP banned through most of Malaysian ISPs for most of 2019, for... Reasons.
Singapore does not have these same hang-ups, plus it's got a fantastic tech industry to support lots of VPN infrastructure, plus it's super-close-by so neighbours don't have to worry about issues with ping which might occur if they were using, say, New Zealand or something as a VPN point instead.
@@ShaunCheah Thanks for the explaination.
