I'd be thinking 1,000,000klm, thing in Aus is that a lot of people with these probably drive 30-50klm to where ever they've going, engine get nice & warm before it gets turned off. My father had Taxi's & always got about 1.000.000klm out of a motor, because they were always warm :)
@@briansmale5457 engine heat cycle plays a big part. If you do a lot of highway driving an engine can rack on a lot of miles. Also starting in our -30c winters and all the road salt doesn't help a vehicle last all to long up here.

I live in Australia and I own a 2011 Hilux SR5 4WD with a 5-speed standard transmission & 3.0L Diesel engine. It has pretty descent acceleration and is pretty much an indestructable "ute" (utility vehicle- that's what we call our pickup trucks here). I've driven around half the country with it across rocks, floods, red deserts, sandy beaches and all types of terrains, moved houses with it, taken my kids to school with it and after 10 years it still drives like a dream. I always tell my wife I'd be buried in my Hilux and she thinks it's the best way to go. Pretty much sums up how good these vehicles are.
This has similar turbo to a Camry diesel my parents owned. Same glow plug and green light for turbo. Even with 300k miles the diesel went to over 200km/h which is around 125mph - tested in Germany. Brings memories back when I was a kid. That car routinely pulled 3000 lbs trailer.
I am on my third here in the UK. Best truck to own and drive ever. Built like a barn door, 26 years old 220,000kms and starts first touch of the key. Tons of hop ups and mods around to make them even better. 25mpg isn't bad, and do the injector resistor mod to get better performance. Takes 20 mins, and the 'slow' part disappears. You forgot one of it's best attributes: the solid front axle. That's another reason it has never been sold here, the front axle can take a beating, but most Americans don't need it, they'd rather have something that drives on the pavement better.
I'm sad you didn't show any of the under body, such a beautiful design, wish car companies didn't car about money and made reliable cars that'll go millions of miles
I think Toyota from Japan has a very good under chassis, they dont rust easily like the other western toyota mades, we have a 1993 toyota supercustom from Japan and it doesnt have cracks and rusts in the underchassis. sorry for the bad grammar
SCOTTY, I have exactly the same one also from 1993. It has in fact a 2.4 ltr engine, the 2L-TE, not 2.8 ltr as you stated. Yes, grossly underpowered at around 90 bhp. The later versions came with a 3.0 ltr turbo diesel, the 1KZ-TE with 125 bhp and 145 bhp with aftercooler. Those go better. Despite the low power the fuel consumption is bad these being indirect injection engines. I struggle to get 10 km/ltr which is about 24 mpg (us gln). One word of caution: cyl heads of these are prone to cracking when there is coolant loss or overheating. Cooling system needs to be maintained very well . If so no problems and they will. Indeed last forever.
Many Japanese SUVs from this era had turbo diesel engines. I’ll never forget the Mitsubishi Montero with 99HP and 240NM of torque in our part of the world.
The Hilux can beat any car in the globe. In Australia some models have got above 400'000 kilometers with the stock engine, and all the stock transmission. The ultimate car for the apocalypse. After my hybride forester, this is my dream car. The Hilux i have looking for in december 2020, was the 2021 Ultimate version, with a automatic gearbox, 4 leather seats. I can charge on the back 1 ton of weight and this vehicle is capable to tract 3.5 tonnes !
Yes, that's what I was thinking about. If that had a standard transmission it would be the perfect vehicle for taking through the outback anywhere. That's really what those vehicles were intended for in the first place. Or going through deep snow with a good set of deep tread tires on it. I would not want to take it through mountainous terrain with that auto transmission though. If I purchased one of those, acceleration would not be on my mind anyway. With that diesel engine and a standard tranny, I bet that thing could pull a heck of a load without any hesitation. It's nice to see a vehicle with an intake up high for a change. All the idiots could drive that through flooded streets without sucking water into the engine and bending a pushrod. LOL Both my father and grandfather would have loved the vehicle like that to take on their hunting excursions back in the day.

My truck is a diesel '84 Mazda b2200. Engine is a tank. I'm just now hitting the point where I need to replace and repair a lot of the original parts but the engine has never had to be rebuilt. You can't find every last little thing always, but the parts are still pretty easy to find and super affordable compared to other trucks (especially newer ones). Gets 35+ mpg and definitely trains you to be patient going up some hills.
Hi Scotty, i'm from Peru. I want to point out that in my country and most Latin America we imported those cars used from Japan since the 90's and of course brand new as well. What i can tell you is that almost every used-imported SUV were automatic as yours, but the ones that were brand new here were mostly manual until the late 90's. So i would reccomend for someone who wants to import a manual one to look in Japan but in our region. VERY important to check the condition first.
I have one, the one Scotty is driving isn't running right, they aren't fast, but they sure aren't that slow. It needs a complete service and a cheap mod. ECU capacitors are probably shot.
Back in the day, we called them station wagons! Changing the name station wagon to SUV was a masterful marketing ploy that the public bought hook line and sinker!
Sold my surf to a co worker . He rolled it over twice it landed on its wheels. Broke his shoulder drove it 14 kmph s on three wheels back to town to get help. They are tough.
many uk owners imported them from japan....i had a 2.5 diesel pajero/shogun great fun off roading with that but then it was time to be sensible so sold it for a crv
I have a 94 'Toyota 4Runner, with a 22R carburettor engine, 4X4 manual transmission, a beast and I make trips of 1200 km every 2 months and it doesn't give me any problems, a car made to last.
I did UK, Europe, to Greece like a breeze with Toyota Hilux Surf SSRG T.D Intercooler 3.0L Just a mile eater. "Old School" One of the most good looking & Reliable SUV's ever made . Hands down.
There was a 3 Part Series on Top Gear around 2010 where they tried to destroy a Hilux Pickup. They smashed it with a wrecking ball, sunk it in the Atlantic, set it on fire, put it on the roof of a 25 story building which was then imploded, and the damn thing still ran.
more than half the time if a computer goes bad its just cracked solders, I fixed the ABS computer in my 04 Blazer by taking it out and heating the computer up to the point where everything reseeded themselves and I put the ABS computer back in and it started working again. actually did the same thing to an Xbox to get it working again, so before you throw out a computer thinking its bad, try that first it doesn't hurt anything.
@@rothmanrinyenakpeter8895 Sure haha, probably adding intercooler plus remapping or plus another turbo, without intercooler upgrade theres limited things u can do, I prefer stock for reliability, only issue is overtaking can be dangerous and need to have a lot of distance and don take risk haha
Still don't understand why people in the US be importing them from Japan right-handed...when there are plenty on Europe left-hand drive, and probably cheaper to import.
Japanese don't drive that much and often get rid of a good clean (mostly rust-free) car and buy a new one every 5 years because you pay more in taxes the older they get
Literally just bought a 1995 Surf with the diesel today. I love it. Pickup is fine to me. Especially for normal driving. Hope to have it for many decades. I love the look of the 2nd generation
I had an '89 Dodge Colt, (Mitsubishi) that the cooling fan wouldn't come on. No A/C. No power steering. No radio. Manual trans. I replaced all 3 temp sensors. Still no fans. The head gasket was already blown when I bought it, but it was only blowing buckets of oil onto the transaxle, YES from the head gasket. I paid $125 for the car. I put a 30amp toggle on the fan, and about 50/50 tractor trailer oil and stop leak in the crank case. I Drove that car to work for 2 years!!!! It was the front end parts and repair that junked it. It needed rotors plus steering parts. About $1000 worth of work. I got $150 for it at the junk yard. WIN WIN!!!!!
Yeah Scotty, maintaining a imported Toyota can be a hassle at times. I learned that the hard way after buying a 1990 Toyota Crown as my first car three years ago on my 18th birthday. I'd use it as my daily driver-still do at times. Though once a critical engine part breaks: I'd be without a vehicle for months because it is very, very hard to find parts for this car in circulation as most are discontinued and some distributors just won't sell the part due to international trade safety and sometimes political regulations. I still own the car. Love it. Never gonna get rid of it. RN I'm having alternator issues. Just bought a replacement recently and it's ironic because I just finished fixing the camshaft position sensor that went out in December of last year. I didn't find that sensor part until July of this year. I now have a 91' Chevy Caprice as my daily driver once I get it fixed up to rely on whenever my Crown breaks down.
the one u have is the 2.4, not a 2.8, fugal engine and they suffered from over heating/head gasket issues (make sure you do the cooling mods), poorly designed cooling system, the one you should have got is the 3.0 diesel, now that is a completely different beast, lots of low down torque and keeps up with modern day traffic with no problems.
Umm I'm gen y (30 years old) & me & my mates only ever started driving on manuals.. though I'm Australian. For some reason Americans don't seem to drive manuals..
@@Jimmy-fw1wd most Americans around your age are never taught as it’s very rare to find a manual nowadays in the states. I’m personally waiting on the new Civic Si to be guaranteed a manual.

Hey, Scotty! Have you checked out Whistlin Diesel's Hilux Durability Test video series? He does a good job of putting one of these through its paces. Turns out they are pretty durable.
The two best vehicles I’ve owned are both Diesel. 2013 VW Passat TDI and 2021 GMC 1/2 to.Silverado Duramax. I’m glad to see more 1/2 ton diesel option in the us.
I don't know why Americans import from Japan with the steering wheel on the wrong side if they can import from south America, we have all the Japanese cars build for our market and the most important LEFT HAND DRIVE FROM THE MANUFACTURER, no hassle, no inconveniences 😅 Actually we get the "4runner" on diesel configuration from the dealership
I had one of those for 11 years 5 manual speed, yep was a slow car, but after I took out the EGR, the Butterfly, re-adjust the waste gate and cut out almost 75% of the exhaust, the truck the power went up and speed. The temp went down almost in 180C. When every time went to off road is was a tank, crossing water almost 4 feet deep no problem of course whit an appropriate tires. I miss my old truck. I bought a Tacoma 2020 what a mistake !
The only complaint about it as an automatic is that it’s slow isn’t a “downfall.” We buy these things for the off-road and reliability factor…NOT SPEED. I enjoy my 1996 Surf 1KZTE SSRX…and parts aren’t super difficult. You just have to make friends in other countries 🙂
I, for one, never owned an automatic, and go crazy trying to find the clutch when driving a rental. BTW, I don't believe the people don't like diesels---The EPA just likes to flex their political muscle, at our expense. I'll take 60s cars with stick shift, and no damned computerized garbage to go wrong. ( But then Scotty wouldn't need his $5000 scanner). LOL
I have european version of grand voyager 2001 with 2.5l CRD engine which produces up to 105kW @ 4k RPM and it can go 190 km/h. It has 210k miles and it's working fine even after 20 years. Nothing was replaced here. Even turbo and transmission is original :)
If you want to know if your coolant temperature fan switch is bad, unplug the switch and put a jumper across the terminals in the plug. If the fan comes on (key on) the switch is bad. If the fan doesn’t come on, the problem could be wiring, relay, fuse, or computer.
A guy i know has a 1988 Hilux with the 2.4L Diesel, i think it's done 360k miles and it still runs good. He bought it brand new and it never fails him. It has been maintained to a crazy high level but hey it seems worth it. I reckon it might just outlast him.
Scott, congratulations on the find! Can’t wait to see repair videos on it. I have a Landcruiser from Japan in the USA, same engine as the Hilux, 1KZTE.
Scotty mate, I got a new lux, 2.8 diesel, 500 nm of torque goes like a cut cat, my old lux had the D4D engine, done 370k never missed a beat, best ute I ever had.

This one has independent front suspension. The aircon condenser is installed horizontally in front of the suspension.
A lot of the hilux's have solid fronts but none of the surfs came with them

LOL
Both my father and grandfather would have loved the vehicle like that to take on their hunting excursions back in the day.
The 3.0 1kzte has more power. I have one in the UK its an auto and goes great! Cruises at 70-80mph all day long and its not noisey.

If someone were to look, what website do yall use? Puedo hablar español como un niñito o un payaso y quiero tener un hilux.
Those things are great so long as you don't drop them to earth from a helicopter.

Well, they will end up as targets for the Marines pretty soon so it doesn’t really matter how slow they are.

The only complaint about it as an automatic is that it’s slow isn’t a “downfall.” We buy these things for the off-road and reliability factor…NOT SPEED.

If you want to know if your coolant temperature fan switch is bad, unplug the switch and put a jumper across the terminals in the plug. If the fan comes on (key on) the switch is bad. If the fan doesn’t come on, the problem could be wiring, relay, fuse, or computer.
