back when I started my teacher always pressed me to practice the rudiments. I never did so I never really gotten good at the technical part of drumming which demoralized me a lot. I quit a year in or so. Now I bought my self a practice pad and thanks to your video and your technique descriptions im getting better and better and it and it feels great!
Thank you so much for rekindleing my love for drums, and more importantly, igniting my passion for wanting to learn the technique!

I have to say, i've been on youtube for the past week looking at all sorts of drumming tutorials and courses both free and also paid options and while i initially discovered your channel early, i didnt feel like it was what i was looking for, but the most I looked around and learned about drumming the more i realized that this is probably the best beginner drumming tutorials on youtube right now. the videos you put out target exactly the points where i feel the most frustrated or lost or confused. being a complete beginner it's hard to even know whether one is doing the things correctly or incorrectly but you put so much detail and visual examples into the specific tips that i feel i can confidently follow and understand when it's correct or not correct.
thank you again for the great content!

Recently I came across your videos and relearned a lot of info I forgot over the last 60 years! I started playing drums at ten in1962 and stopped in 1990. What I like is your instruction on finger control. I learned this in 7th grade and mastered it by 8th grade I was able to double stroke an open stroke roll almost without any wrist movement. I'm now starting to pick up the sticks again at 70 to help with hand rehab. I hand a funny way of holding my right stick ( I'm left handed) I used my index finger to control the head finger response. When questioned my response was It works for me.

Hi Stephen. I just wanted to add another exercise for the fingers that i picked up from Jo Jo Meyer. What i do for fingers is isolate every individual finger and play 8ths, 16ths and 8th note triplets. So i play this on each finger without stopping going from finger to finger. It has helped me strengthen my fingers a lot and my finger control has gotten pretty good. I really like your instruction videos. Really informative and easy to understand. Thanks again!

Stephen, while you inadvertently covered the wrist involvement of the second stroke (the cheating part) with the extended arm slapping exercise, may I also mention that I have great success in evening out my doubles by accenting the second stroke of each double as an exercise all to itself as well. Does miracles in evening out open rolls. Just sayin'. All the Best & keep up the good lessons.

This video is gold. I think it's important to recognize that as the doubles speed up, a natural contraction of the fingers begins to happen to keep the second note of the double in time. I don't want to use the word "tighten" because you definitely don't want to tighten up the muscles unnecessarily but they definitely need to contract at higher speeds in order to keep things in sync. The wrists and fingers must stay relaxed and not let useless tension creep in.

Noticed you do similar "mistake" with the basic stroke. Your right hand starts higher. the wrist movement of the left hand is significantly smaller (but maybe it is just the camera). I just noticed as I am relearning usage of the wrist, I used to use elbow rather than wrist and then just fingers for the rebound control, and figured out my right wrist makes much bigger move, so I am trying to focus on that.
Anyway thanks for this lesson, as usual, very useful and easy to understand.

Thanks Steven for this video. I've just revisiting drumming after almost 20 years not playing (was playing casually as a beginner for my churst for 2-3 years when I was in University), and I'm sorta getting the hang of holding the stick losely. My main issue and question is, how do I keep it from moving or slipping? I find that when i was moving losely it tends to slip and my hand will move up the stick getting closer to the tip. If i hold it a bit tightly to prevent on slipping it would lose a bit of the loseness. Do you have a tip for how to play lose and fast without your hands slipping? Thanks again for all the awesome videos and pdfs!

Great approach stephen. Especially timeline of where the transitions occur.
Would be great to do a video on slow to faster paradiddles. Where i see the guys at faster tempos looks like seemless 3 strokes.
Also wouldn’t be better to use all wrists up to the tempo where the bounce takes over, then eventually transition the fingers then finally throw-catch?
Just asking since i still struggle with faster doubles 👍

Hey Stephen, I have a question about holding sticks during French Grip. I was always under the impression that you're not suppose to hold the stick like your thumb and forefinger are rolling a small ball back and forth. In this tutorial it looks like thats exactly what you are doing (14:00). Is that close to what you are doing, or am I misunderstanding? I always feel like the stick is going to fly out of my hand. Main thing is don’t grip with only the finger tip on your pointer finger, the pinch point should be at the first crease/joint on your pointer finger. It may still feel insecure at first but with practicing and conditioning that should start to minimize. The freedoms afforded to the butt of the stick this way is where we generate dexterity and power…it doesn’t come from the pinch point itself. The centrifugal action actually helps keep the stick in place more than the pinch

I have discovered that my whole left hand is very tight and there are spots with pain. For the last 5 months i have been working on releasing all the tention by stretching to the point of pain and only then eveything gets loose and the stick bounces the way it should. What probaby happens also when you speed up is that because the grip is not good to beging with the flaws show when you speed up.
So maybe slow down and see where the stick wants to go and do micro changes to your finger positioning till you get it right. If you find it painful to hold the stick right and make it bounce right you also have tention if no pain at all then its just a matter of teaching the fingers a new position and by that adapting new muscle memory. Good luck

Non-drummers are fooled into thinking I can play decently but the second a drummer hears my recordings I think they can tell I have no clue what I am doing.. I hoping I can use this to finally practice doubles and start improving... but almost everytime I try to work on something new that I stink at.. i feel like i get worse.

    • @ironjuan
      @ironjuan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Michael. That's normal. You will get to control that as you practice that exercise more. It is all about building good stick balance while keeping the loose grip. Just keep working on it and don't fall into pinching or getting tight.
Pay attention to the direction of the stick as you throw it, and keeping it seated on the balance point. It probably crooks because it looses contact at the bounce and it went down a bit sideways. It is not one thing or the other though. You are doing the exercise thar will help you fix it, just give it time and regular practice.

Man I have to say the following ... hopefully it comes out constructive hehe : Ill say your accent (speech) is pretty specific and it sort off sound like you don't pronounce words fully. Add bunch of absorbing panels in your rec room for obvious reasons .. plus the distance from your mic and or position perhaps .... well all that to say Mate I have a hard time following you sometimes!! Its a damn shame because your teaching skills / knowledge is very good!! Id watch a lot more of your videos if that wouldn't be an issue.
Now in case i failed to phrase this right; Its nothing terrible and yes i am picky and i am aware of it hehe! That said, I feel like the potential amount of time you > potential new subs is something to think of. Anyways thanks for what you do and how down to earth you approach teaching.
Actually on topic: I find myself often practicing the *** out of my doubles ever since i heard back than my university percussion teacher make rolls at bassically any speed that could be usable musically but the catch his you could not hear the hand distinction. Ive never seen it done that flawlessly outside of this one person. so yeah I practice my doubles and i have this sort of reference of how it could be ... and i guess i ocd over it for hours at a time hehe! them practice pads sessions O-o For the reccord the teacher practiced it for like well over 40 years almost daily and he was particularly picky about having best technique possible so he probably spent half his life worth in time to achieve it .... Mad respect to him.

I can do all doubles on Conga Drums, with my hands, real fast. We Conga Players do everything that a Drummer does.

I played the Cowbell with my feet, doing the 2/3 Cuban Clave.

@@victorortega9845 Only the 2/3 cuban clave? A drummer play much more different things with his feet.
There is no comparison between a drummer and a conga player.

@@fredtrax4574 I'm not trying to have an argument with you,; What I'm saying is that certain patterns that Drummers do, we Conga Players can do the same. Different drums, different ways of playing. In Latin Jazz, there's a different way of playing Congas, than Playing for example: What is called: SALSA. Anyway: Happy Holidays 2 you, and, your family.
