There is also a warranty difference between the dial motor and the quad motor.
Very true! Here’s a link to that information! rivian.com/support/article/what-is-the-warranty-coverage-on-a-new-rivian
Thanks for this helpful breakdown! I got in a reservation before the price hike, so I am waiting on my quad motor R1S. I have been giving a lot of consideration to whether I would prefer a dual motor variant as I don’t *need* quad motor. However, since I got my reservation in before the price hike, it doesn’t make sense for me to pay so much more for less capability. I like the idea of having 400 miles of range but, again, the price difference does not justify changing my order.
You’re welcome, glad it was helpful! I’d probably do the same that you are doing. Keep the quad for now since the price is unbeatable. And if you get it and want resell for a dual motor that would be the best move
Thanks for the information. It really help me decide what model (Quad vs Performance Dual) is good for me. Btw, do you know that when Rivian will use LFP battery pack for their R1 platform?
Glad I can help! LFP batteries are mainly being used for Amazons fleet of Rivian vehicles, but there are reports that there could be an option for both R1T and R1S later this year or early next year
Great video and presentation--thank you, and it is a great overview. Well done! Another thing to keep in mind: the quad motor is a Bosch unit, whereas the Enduro Dual Motor was developed in-house by Rivian. Sandy Munro, an engineer, has done a couple of TH-cam videos on his channel where they've torn down both motors, and although the Bosch quad motor unit is a good one, improvements have been made on the Enduro Dual Motor unit created in-house by Rivian. Might help in your decision making to check those out. In the end, as you mentioned, it really comes down to how you want to use the vehicle and then selecting the power unit that best suits your needs. Thanks again!
Thank you for the extra info! I need to check out those videos!
Better but they don't believe in their own product enough to offer the same warranty as the Boscb units... what's that tell you?
Our price was locked in at $75k for Quad Motor and only option was the 22" wheel at $1800. If I had the choice for Dual Motor and more range at $75k or Quad Motor at $92k, very easy. Dual Motor all the way. Top speed about the same. The 0-60 is not a big deal.. since Quad motors in real test vary.. 3.1 to 3.3.. and both suffer low trap speed in quarter mile due to speed limiter. I just wished the Dual Motor was significantly lighter.. not just +./-200lbs. By the way, once rolling above 70/80 mph.. the pull power is greatly reduced. The Quad motor needs a performance pack extend the top speed to about 120 and a bit more aggressive launch mode .
As an early reservation holder, and i do need a 7 seater EV, I will stick to my quad. Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome! Hoping for a speedy reservation so you can get that quad!!!
Towing, long range, and performance off-road all are super important in a truck. The 11,000 #’s is great but I would like to see 13,000 #’s as an upgrade. The Electrical output for Alternating Current (AC) would be absolutely amazing if it was offered in a 220volt outlet in the bed. If towing and range don’t matter to you buy a 4 door car, just my truck world experience.
The towing capacity in the Rivian is based off of the shorter wheelbase, not low power of the motors. So, in order to safely raise the limit, the actual wheel base of the truck would have to be longer.
Not surprised at all… regarding the same tow capacity. The towing capacity is limited by the wheelbase in the Rivian not the power in either configuration
I am a few months from getting a R1T Quad Motor with a Large pack.
That's very exciting! How long have you been waiting for?
Mike, no one talks about conserve mode performance on Quad-motor. Some say conserve mode is hard on tires. Others say it nearly offers the same range as Performance dual-motor.
Some, like Kyle Conner or Brandon Flasch, have tried testing, but their results were inconclusive, and not really based on reality.I mean, if you need to use conserve mode to get somewhere, you obviously shouldn't drive at 70 mph.
I'm a 2021 preorder, still waiting for my vehicle. I'm currently mulling whether I should keep Quad or go with dual maxpack. Where I live, these extra miles do indeed make a difference.
When is your timeframe for delivery? How does the online store look for vehicles in their inventory?
@@MikeKantorskiTech I'm currently in "Processing estimate" purgatory. I suspect this is so because I live way up in Northern Ontario. (GM has its cold weather testing site in my town.)
Reservation holders in Southern and Central Ontario have delivery dates beginning this December through April. Rivian has not been forthcoming with me. I still hope that the delivery will happen by next summer.
The problem in this area is charging infrastructure. We have many 50 kW Flo chargers, but the decently sized one (200 kW+) are located 315 miles away (both eastbound and westbound).
Maximum road speeds here are 56 mph (90 km/h). I'm not worried about making it to the big chargers during summer. It's our winters that occasionally dip to -40°F that worry me. It is my understanding that in such cold weather, the 315 mile trip to the nearest 200kW+ chargers will possibly require two 90-minute recharging stops at the 50kW stations.
The 31 mile advantage we get from discarding Quad-motor for Dual-motor is interesting, but I have yet to find reliable data on Quad-motor Conserve mode range vs. Dual-motor range. I suspect it is close. Shelling an extra $10K for Maxpack remains an option, but I will do so at the expense of a 5 yr warranty.
@@marcguindon8499 I see, well I hope they keep building up the infrastructure. Although it seems possible with what you have right now. I’ll keep you posted on how my LFP battery does this winter in the Boston area. We don’t get as cold as you do but I’m expecting a possible 10% dip in range. I use a 6 kw charger while I work but in a pinch superchargers are super useful. Will you have any superchargers near you when NACS gets opened up?
Yes that's it, the 200+ kW chargers that are located 315 miles away, both east and west, are indeed Tesla superchargers.
Tesla has invested massively on TransCanada Hwy 17 (Ontario Interstate for cars.) I live on TransCanada Hwy 11 (Ontario Interstate for big rigs.)
Although there are quite a few Teslas up here, I doubt our highway is a priority.
That's why I'd really like to see you do winter hypermileage up in New Hampshire or Vermont.
@marcguindon8499 that would be a great video! I’ll keep my eye on the temperatures up north and make a weekend trip of it!
Very good information, they need to get the price of the performance 2 motor in the price range to get the max tax credit and it would be the hot seller
Thanks you! I agree, also some new battery tech is coming which could lower the price!
Can we Collaborate on RIvian accessories video about your TH-cam?
Max Pack is the best option
I’d disagree, max pack is 10k for not much range over large pack. If you aren’t towing then there really is no need
If you live in a big state like utah every single mile of charge counts
I also own a Tesla and a Porsche and those are great if you are just going to the grocery store and home..max pack if you want to go up north or down south on an adventure to Moab or to the mountains
Even for 10k?
Get the Quad Motor unless Rivian begins to match the warranty of the dual motor to that of the quad motor.
Yeah the fact that they have said little to nothing about this is shady…
Is anyone getting greater range greater than 240 miles on road? How about winter driving in temps less than 32 degrees f.? Off road range is abysmal. Driving to an off road area, driving around off road, driving back to where you started. Where is the Diesel generator hiding?
I guess it all depends on what type of offroading you’re doing. As far as I know, Rivian estimate is pretty accurate, whereas my Tesla goes off of EPA rating which is not as accurate.
Other than the raw power discrepancy, quad motor doesn't seem to be an advantage for off-roading per the current architecture. th-cam.com/video/I9J52zE5boc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BF-9RcEvtRhK41me
Or buy a toyota 4runner for 20k less and wait for more EV trucks to push down the price as rivian slowly slides toward bankruptcy.
The next generation R2 platform will cost less and should help increase their rise to profitability. Rivian is still in their infancy, should be interesting to see their future
@@MikeKantorskiTech Rivian isn't going to escape the nursery if they don't get their prices more in line with other manufacturers as they come online. $70k for a base model midsize pickup is not competitive and likely will be massively undercut by both hybrid trucks like the 24 tacoma and the other EV. $20+k cheaper sure does make up for a lot of ugly angular stainless steel.
@madprophetus haha yes, that cybertruck is sure to add more of an eyesore to the roads, and I take the R1T as the truck that got people interested. Maybe the R2 will be able to compete at an even lower price to combat all the new EVs coming to market. All I know is that the next 10 years will be interesting to watch and I hope Rivian will stick around
I don't want to sound like a Rivian fanboi, but Rivian is making massive improvements costs-wise. During Q3-2022, they were losing $130 000 per vehicle sold, now Q3-2023 they're only losing $30000. There still is a long way to go, but when you got Amazon's financial backing, you got good chances to succeed.
I'm keeping an eye on LFP battery chemistry which Rivian is using in their standard pack. If they manage to put LFP in their large packs, they'll certainly survive.
@@marcguindon8499 I agree, they are moving in the right direction. They seem to be ahead of the game as far as start up EV's go. Opening up their commercial business will be helpful, the new plant being built in Georgia, and battery pack chemistry is interesting too. I have an LFP Tesla and could not be happier with the battery as of now. There is definitely some promise in this company. I have seen many more Rivian's near where I live as well!
I dont know who would buy this, if you want a serious off roader you dont buy this.
It is a pretty capable off-roading truck, but definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. But sure there are better off-road cehicles
Point to a better STOCK off roader, include water forging specs, stock tire size, etc. Once you waste your time and can’t find one (Jeep Rubicon is closest competitor until you factory in water forging and ground clearance ). Then include the fact that these come with a factory warranty that is unmatched by anything you’ll find. Not only that, but as you’re on your way to the off-roading trailhead (if plush comfort, with incredible sound system)…if you run into a million dollar plus super car that wants to drag race, you’ll beat them. This is quicker than most production Ferries ever made. It will beat a Bugatti (not in launch mode). Car camping in this thing is unbelievable, it auto-levels and has climate control you can run all night without worrying about poisoning yourself while you sleep. Sorry for the rant, but if “off roading” for you was just rock crawling only, then yeah…move on to other options.
but then you have to look at it and thats the problem, I dont want to drag race .@@fpartidafpartida
I actually love the stylistic choices they’ve made with their vehicles, but to each their own
It is truly a full package!
