A somewhat random aside, my favorite Christianity is the obscure 1st century Gnosticism beliefs that sort of describe how the world is a prison created by an evil being, and Jesus is kind of a embodied angel that felt bad for humanity and came to bring the knowledge humans need to escape. It is matrix shit, it is Dungeons & Dragons shit. I love it.

Early Christian Gnosticism sees the world and the the body as a material prison created by an Evil Demiurge Yaldabaoth or Saklas which is actually Satan. In that sense, all abrahamic religions worship the Devil, the King of the material world, for personal favours.

Really enjoyed this episode! Felt like there was more levity and a lighter tone in the pessimism episode which is funny and suitable. Recently I've really been enjoying reading Schopenhauer's 'On the suffering of the world' edited and with a neat intro by Eugene Thacker.
Apparently, Schopenhauer had a series of pet poodles all of whom he named "Atma" from Sanskrit, and spent the latter part of his life in self-imposed solitude with his dogs, young kids would sometimes shout "young Schopenhauer!" at his poodle during their walks. One more anecdote, in 1854 Richard Wagner (huge fan of The World as Will...) sent Schopenhauer a privately printed and signed copy of Der Ring des Nibelungen. Schopenhauer never sent a written reply, which troubled Wagner for a long time, but he scribbled critical, disdainful notes in the margins of his copy, such as repeatedly writing "Ears!" , "he has no ears! the deaf musician." Wagnerite fanboys in Zurich were rebuked when they wanted to invite the "Frankfurt sage" to visit with them and it seems they were still coping up until the 1990s, pretending as if Schopenhauer held Wagner in high regard.
Also from the introduction to my edition: "Most philosophers are trying to convince you; but Schopenhauer is there when you're already convinced. There is a religious or mythical dimension to his philosophy, but a religion without a Church, a mythos without gods, a 'leap' that is not followed by faith - only the Great Doubt of existents suspicious of their own existence. Schopenhauer doesn't tell you what you don't know; he confirms what you already know."

The best thorough introduction to Buddhism I’ve encountered so far is In the Buddha’s Words: An Anthology of Discourses from the Pali Canon by Bhikkhu Bodhi
I highly recommend checking it out if you’re interested in the more buddhist side like Shopenhauer. It starts off assuming you know nothing and builds towards intermediate territory by the end. Very good and the one that really got me into buddhism after reading some more popular and simple books on the topic

Schopenhauer would have dug the Jesus of the Gospel Of Thomas, i think.

Regarding the things we think will be bad will be worse I think i can kind of agree with him, it could be you are selectively assocating a few of the things that were not as bad as more prominent because it actually was the exception, so you remember the times you thought something would be bad and then it wasn't nearly as bad. It stands out becaue it is rare, and I think he is right. Losing family, you know it sucks but some days even years gone it just can devour you. If anything it is neutral, but I think an argument could be made as schopenhauer made

Schopenhauer did not think christianity is bullshit. Schopenhauer said that the principal message of Christianity is that the laws of the old testament have failed and only through belief in christ, which he read into as his 'denial of the will' could there be any hope of redemption. He actually said that his philosophy aligns with the deeper meaning of Christianity as paradoxical as it might sound.

Christianity can be liberating and good for community if they reject capitalism and market logic while putting human needs first

anything can be liberating when the correct perspective is applied. Prison can be liberating because it takes all the difficulties of decsion away, and you can just exist.

"if they reject capitalism and market logic"
This is true , but also "anti-american"
Jesus " You can`t serve to masters. You can`t serve God and money"
The average US Christian (Evangelical), on the other hand, says: "Greed is good"

Christian's praise a suicidal savior and chastise those who commit the act.Jesus is a concept that elders concocted 2000 years ago.If Jesus died for us.Why would a All- knowing God create a fallible bag of bones? If God is Jesus and Jesus is God and the Holy Spirit is Jesus and so on and so on, Christianity is confusion,Tall tales, and judgemental. The Bible has 66 books and only one speaks the truth. We work a trivial job to gain material possession's just to give away.Lol, It's meaningless..
