I have a Polish M44 Mosin Nagant made in 1954. I got it unissued, still in cosmoline. It's beautifully made, with excellent fit and finish plus I got it dirt cheap. After complete disassembly, cleaning (caked and dried out 'gun snot' is no fun), a little lubrication and reassembly, it was off to the range. With the short barrel it has a decent kick but is manageable. The stock is short for me so i use a slip on rubber recoil pad which helps with fit and recoil. All in all, an excellent bolt-action rifle. I know many people pooh-pooh the Mosin but I think it's a keeper. I toyed with mounting a scope but decided to leave it original. It's proven to be an excellent hunting rifle, taking several deer and moose. Inside of about 250 yards, the open sights are adequate for 'boiler-room' shots.

hi big Sam i have a 1946 m44, i got it in a strange way, my brother in law was a marine, he was in Bayrout Lebanon and then Granada, he captured a Cuban solder and took his m44 rifle as a trophy of war i have the certificate in a frame, 20 years ago my wife took her brother secretly to a gun shop and he sold it. she did not tell me until 2 weeks after, it was 7.30 at night we got there 8.15 at night i knew the owner he sold it back for 100.00 with the capture papers. the reason i went after it because it was given to the Cubans by Russia for the bay of pigs, then years later captured in Granada it is a piece of history.

I've been lucky I picked a polish up at a pawn shop 6 months back. Went back to the same pawn shop and found a m44 again, I knew it was special when I saw it, I thought it was polish also, couldn't find anything on it but then I did,its hungarian, looks brand new.

A hidden gem often mistaken for a m38 or m44 is the m91/59. I have 2 in great condition. The receiver on both is 1943, and they started life as m91/30 full size rifles. In the late 50's they were shortened to m38 carbine length and the bayonets removed. Issued to tear echelon troops.

      @@wildcatindustries8030 I need to get a M91 Long gun , M91 Cossack , M38 and M91/59. I already have a 1925 M91 Dragoon ,1943 M91/30, and a 1946 M44 Carbine. My M44 is a Izshevek built carbine that was sent to Romania.

My first gun was an M44. Story I was told is the batch they got in 10-15 years ago was from a salt mine somewhere in Ukraine. Looking at the news it sounds like near Bahkmut to me! I will NEVER part with that rifle ever obviously. Means the world to me. Makes me wonder though specifically where the arsenal was at specifically. Had to be near there. Heavy salt mining in that area. Receiver tang bottom is odd, it has scallops all over like as if it was made from a much older Imperial receiver and was remade into an M44. Barrel too is odd in a few ways. I will have to do a video one day on it. I don't mind the kick of the carbines at all. Counterbored and Arsenal 1 refurbished but it is a great gun.

I have one from 1948, too. It has a refinished stock, all matching original numbers, and the bolt assembly is well polished and clean, unlike some of the older ones I have looked at. It is as Russian made. I find it to be a very well-made rifle. Not as much history, but a great choice for a shooter.
