  • Happy “Baba Marta” ( Баба Марта, 1 Март) and with it the coming of spring! 🌸 🐰 🌺 🐣
In today’s video I will be sharing one of Bulgaria’s biggest and most traditional holidays- “Grandma March”.
“Baba Marta” or “Grandma March” is celebrated on the 1st of March and is intended to bring us into the Spring season with health and happiness.
Bulgarians all across the globe hand out “Martenitsi” ( Мартеници ) to their loved ones, which we wear until we find the first blooming tree. At that point we remove the “martenitsa” and hang it on the flowering tree. In doing so we shed ourselves of all sickness and unhappiness and are now ready to enter spring!
Let’s celebrate this beautiful Bulgarian holiday together- traditions, legends and all!
    ❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍❤️🤍
    ABOUT ME:
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

We have the same holiday in Poland, a bit later though, on the first day of spring and we call these dolls Marzanna, from the Polish word for March which is Marzec. We make a bit bigger doll and throw it to a river on the 1st day of spring. We call it: topienie Marzanny. I like Bulgaria very much. My first international trip back in the day was to Varna by car from Poland. 2 day trip, no less. I was just 7 and the sea was great and people were nice. I picked up Bulgarian very quickly since I am a Slav and have fond memories of the holidays. Then I went to school and learned Russian and the cirylic alphabet and now I can understand and read Bulgaian much better. I really want to return to Bulgaria soon. My cusin was there in Zlote Piaski just 3 weeks ago and said it was great.

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing! Absolutely love your channel and we always look forward to a new video. We have blooming trees now (in the North Georgia mountains, U.S.A.) and the migratory birds have been heading north from Florida for weeks now, so Spring is moving north! Happy Spring to you and your family. 🥀🌻🐦🐝🐞

Thank you so much John! Hearing that you guys are looking forward to my videos makes me so happy! 😊
The footage I used in this video is a mix from this year and last year (just so I can show the full experience of hanging the Martenichki up on a blooming tree). We don’t have any blooming trees around here just yet but good to hear spring is on the way!! 🌸🌺🌹

Happy Springtime to you all! 🌱🌄
I think that we are unusual in the UK in that we don't have much folklore
We call a piece of tapestry created whilst training/experimenting, a sampler
Always interesting to see, thanks Laurie 🙏

Oh, wow.. and here I am wishing we had more tapestries in Bulgaria. Sadly, the Ottomans destroyed pretty much all of our castles, palaces and works of art so we don’t have much left as far as tapestries and such go. The first thing I do when I visit my mom and sister in the US is go to the Cloisters to see the beautiful Unicorn In Captivity tapestries. I absolutely adore tapestries. You may not have much folklore but you do have beautiful works of art ❤️

These clips are mixed between this year and last year. We don’t have too much blooming yet either. I wanted to show the full tradition but still haven’t found a tree to hang my Martenichka on this year, so I used last year’s clips. My martenichka is still on my jacket and arm 😃

Those kitties are so sweet! My cats always like to plop themselves right in the center of everything I'm doing, too. Love them. Interesting to hear the old dark tale. Very similar to our own stories growing up (e.g. Hansel and Gretel)

Awww thank you so much for saying that about our kitties!! They are our babiessss 😻😻😻. Haha your cats sound sooo adorable! Curious and playful. I’m so happy you enjoyed the tale! I thought it was pretty interesting when I first heard it. Your right! Similar to the fairytales of the Grimm Brothers.

What a nice reminder of an old custom. My Baba and mother used to get letters, yes there used to be only mail in days gone by, and for Springtime they would get the Martinitzi in the letters. Hopefully Baba Marta is not angry this year…

      @sistersofbulgaria9396  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oooo our grandparents do the same for us! Now that I’m in Bulgaria my Baba’s just give them to me but they still send my mom and sister Martenichki in the mail ❤️🤍❤️🤍
Problem is the mail is terrible and always late. My mom and sister still didn’t get the card that Baba sent in December!
Fingers crossed for a warm and bright Baba Marta!

@@sistersofbulgaria9396 well I guess some things never changed especially the mail. Used to take months and in those days during the Cold War, the mail was most likely opened…Here in the Midwest USA Baba Marta must be happy since weather on some days is like Springtime but it’s just not right. Keep doing what your doing and enjoying the better more natural life. Next thing is they will take you to a hot springs with the belief that…maybe you already know…stay happy and healthy!

Laurie, you will find that leaving NYC was the best decision of your life, bar. none. [Returning to Giuliani days of law and order may never happen again at current pace]
Super impressive is your pursuit of tradition and culture, at an almost Japanese level, I haven't seen this from a European in so long, maybe ever......This is what sustains and maintains us despite any external attempts to disrupt. Japan is an excellent example...

    • @sistersofbulgaria9396

Thank you so much for this encouragement. You honestly made me feel so good with everything you said that you made my day! The comparison to Japanese culture is beautiful and so true. I just hope we as Europeans appreciate the beautiful nature we have here and that more of us look to a wholesome life. 🌱
