This is the best detailed review I have seen for PS. Completely captured everything I felt. The effort overshadows the negatives by a large scale. Kudos to Mani sir and team
Ponkuzhali’s characterization wasn’t well etched! Essence from book was missing. Mani could also have used goosebumps scenes from book itself (Arunmozhi’s intro, Vandhiyadevan and Arunmozhi’s fight scene etc). There are around 10-15 scenes he could have taken exactly like in the book. As for the vaal natchathiram, it’s supposed to grow with every danger. That was missing

The problem is this film released after Bahubali and that's the reason people comparing this film with Bahubali because they gone to theatres with expectation whether the film will be like Bahubali or not. If the film was released before Bahubali people must have praised it . Hereafter people will be comparing historic films with Bahubali and ponniyin Selvan. Because people don't go theatres with a fresh expectation they always wanted the old version to be remade and that too historic films are so hard nowadays to get hit but Bahubali received such acclaim because of the goosebumps scenes in that film. People liked such goosebumps particularly that head cut scene in the courtyard. Also the emotion it created cannot be forgotten by the people. That's the reason they go for comparison!

I grew up with this book and loved it to bits. But the movie was not well executed. Screenplay is chaotic. It will be very hard for people who has not read the book before. No depth in any characters. May be they should have done it as 3 parts

Your way of presentation is very beautiful and stunning. The film runs in my vision as you are explaining. I have read this novel in bind book version 50 years ago. You have correctly said that the casting is the highlight of Director Manirathnam. When the news came about this film I appreciated Dir Mani sir for selection of the artists for various roles, especially Vandhiathevan character to Karthi. The opening fight reminded Gladiator, the scenes between Vikram and Vikram Prabhu, the sea shore fight in Sri Lanka reminded of Troy, the scene where Karthi was alone in the sea reminded of Life of Pai, the rescue scenes of Ooman Rani reminded of The Lord of the Rings. the fight sequence of Karthi at the Fort reminded of The Scorpion King. Apart from these things the characterization is well handled. The cinematography and the lighting is enjoyable. The costumes and the use of jewelry takes the audience to the time. Sure there will be orders pouring into many jewelry shops at least in Tamilnadu. All the characters are well portrayed by the seasoned artists of our film industry. The background music and the songs are delivered well by A R Rahman. Well choreographed dances by Brindha. Lovely lines by the lyricists. Thank you Mr. Mani Ratnam- PONNIYIN SELVAN- Part-1.
