  • Today it's the Vox AmPlug, version 2, Brian May signature model. I've heard that the AmPlug stuff is horrible, but I still decided to give this a chance as it's Brian May's signature thing. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
    Hope you enjoy!

During a six week stay in the hospital, I used a bunch of these amp plugs and headset to practice my cheap Monoprice guitar so that I would not disturb other patients saying there. Worked great and keep my spirits up.

These amPlug's with headphones are super handy living in a share house or apartment complex.
I use them all the time. Far from perfect but better than not playing at all.
All those micro amps however just hurt my soul.

Me got into these AmPlugs for playing a simple setup with headphones at night ... just works ...
Even used them as an amp sim plugged into PC loudspeakers and with an 808 in front ... works too
bought the cap long ago but never used it ... Your vid will make me have a look into it ... thanks a lot 👍👍👍

Forty years ago I worked in a music store. Before I quit, I was given a tiny 9 volt battery powered combo amp that was about the size of your speaker cabinet. It had a switch, a volume knob, a tiny red jewel light and an output jack. The speaker alone sounded overdriven with the slightest volume above low. When plugged into the effects loop, with the input to the front jack and the output from the rear jack, it sounded AMAZING through a 412 cabinet.
It was never used during a performance because it couldn't be switched on or off. Somehow it was lost or given away. I don't recall. Sometimes I wish it was still with me, but it wasn't liked enough to buy another one. There were no brand markings or words on it anywhere. So I couldn't search for one if I wanted one.

I think many people miss the point of the Amplug series.
On the surface, technically speaking, there are better options out there with more features and possibilities, but Vox has some cards under its sleeves.
    1) those little things are intended to be inexpensive and fun. They are simple: one (or few) amp simulation for device, the basic controls, one effect at a time, no messing with phones or computers: everything is old school 2) the simulations are frankly good and in some cases excellent (try for example the 3 amp models in the "clean" amplug) 3) you get the best results with a pair of good headphones, possibly monitors. Nowadays you can get good headphones monitors for just 50 bucks, more or less. The little cab is kind of a toy (and it costs as a toy): the output is quite terrible but it is still fun just as a cute toy or to puton display on your desk (and occasionally use it without expectations) 4) they are AAA battery powered! So much people nowadays don't understand that internal lithium batteries are good to use on the short term, but they are not going to last more than 5/6 years, more or less. Then what is going to happen? In most cases everything is going to the waste bin, because modern devices are not built to let the consumer replace lithium batteries...it is just another form of "planned obsolescence"

Bought a couple of AmPlugs in 2017, the "Blues" and the "Bass".
I still use them ... now and again.
They sound good enough, with decent headphones, for QUIET practise.
Even have an Aux Input for playing along.
Mine don't get dusted off as much nowadays since I got a Spark

Hi Elmo, for this money you can get (or use your) Bluetooth speaker with 3.5mm Aux-in and the Flamma FX-10 and you get way better sound (of course only my opinion) with much more options including usable drum samples and effects. Also Bluetooth in. In my opinion currently the best value for your money for earphone practice and small portable practice solution.

My buddy uses the fender Mustang Micro as an amp to play in his apartment just plugs it into his pedal board only uses the amp plug as a clean pedal platform seems to work rather good and kinda cheap easy fix for playing on the go

I have a couple of those Amplug cabs, and I've modded both to have a speaker out. It sounds surprisingly good on a cab. They could've DEFINITELY used higher-power speakers (I'm still debating if I should change the speakers or not... I should try it!).
I mostly use them as a "stack", with a cable I made that splits the output of a single headphone plug into two, and a 9v power supply with a daisy chain cable.

    • @americanstreamer1910
      @americanstreamer1910 หลายเดือนก่อน

You can just plug every Amplug (like every MultiFX-device) into the Harley Benton GPA-100 power amp and then into a passive cab. No modding needed. Just get a TRS cable (must not be longer the 3m) and an adapter for the jack.

The best and cheapest solution for a home setup is a Vox stomplab IG out to some decent computer speakers. Very cheap, sounds great. The Somplab IG has a great Yngwie Malmsteen setting (poached from Direct Recording Guitar on TH-cam) - sounds immense like a 4x12 Cab: Price: £50 or less 2nd hadn for the Vox, and some 2nd hand speakers (at least 4inch speakers) for £5 upwards...

Not very convinced by the Amplug I must say, it's ok straight into your mixer but this mini cab is... Well you said it as well hehe.
On the other hand I'd really really love to see an in depth demo of this Harley Benton, into a proper amp !!!

Ouch. I've got a Spark Mini, but agree you'd be better spending a little extra for a Go by the sounds of it. They are amazing for the price along with the app.

For the first time ever, one of Elmo's demos really sounded bad over my computer speakers. It did sound better when he plugged in the mixer. The bad sound wasn't Elmo's playing. It's the miniature amp gadget. I'm glad I have no need for the "Vox Amplug2 Brian May". The little Spark Go does sound better. This was a good demo, but I don't think Vox will like it.

Thanks for this, everyone micd the tiny speaker so it was impossible to tell what exactly it would sound like in person. This seems MUCH more what i would expect it to sound like in real life. Sounds like a little tin can lol.
I've owned the blues version headphone plug for several years, got tired of using headphones while laying in bed so was planning on buying a cheap $100-150 amp but just stumbled across this.
$50 isn't bad, but idk, if it was $25 i'd buy it right now. I think i'll still got to guitar center and try out the $129 line 6 or $160 LT25.
Edit: They should lower the tiny cab to $25, and make an 8" version amplug 2 cab for $80.

Used with good headphones i have no doubt that it will sound good,
but through that so called cab it sounds terrible!
For a cab to sound good you need at least a 12 inch speaker, not one this small.
I am lucky to have both an AC30 with top boost and a Brian May guitar, even though
i will never sound as good as Brian, but i can at least listen to my attempts without getting
    earache until my neighbour complains.
There is no headphone socket on an AC30, now there's an idea for a mod!

I'll actually tell the truth here.
Its plastic. Its nasty. Its awkward to use, difficult to get a decent tone out of (used Strat & PRS). It randomly switches itself off. It sounds awful with my Sennheisers but better with cheap gamer headset ?
Its a toy that does the "We Will Rock You" drumbeat for the child in you.
After an hour its irritating and in the bin.
