"This taught me mor in 33 min than my ceramics teacher did in 4 years...THANK YOU!!!" Hi, thanks for your comment! It was exact my original idea of posting videos to help more people to have a good start in learning throwing on the potter's wheel.
Thank you so much for sharing this skills I wanted to learn ceramics for long time ago it cost to much money for only 4 classes 😢and I'm learning with you by just watching your videos! Thanks and God bless you 🙏🏻
My goodness, you go beyond generosity to not only cut your pots in half to show us what you are doing on the inside, but to also show us with a clear plastic cylinder. THANK YOU! Greetings from France
Of all the pulling demos I've watched, I've never seen anyone use a plexiglass cylinder to show hand positions. Brilliant! You are a gifted teacher. Many thanks!
Using the plastic cylinder was ingenious! It made it so i could really see the way you positioned your hands, so helpful! Along with cutting open the cylinder, also very helpful‼👍. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher for all of us that are wanting to become better potters💞❣
So incredibly clearly explained! Thank you for taking the time to cut cross-sections to show hand positioning and relationship at each step. I'm a beginner student and it's really helpful to see each step dissected and repeated. I've been watching your videos for about a month now and I've incorporated a lot of your lessons into my practice pieces. Thank you so much, you are a very patient teacher!
You are a most kind and giving person to share your amazing throwing skills in such a generous fashion. You should have the strength to continue in all that you are.
loved the clear explanations & the use of the clear cylinder & cutting the piece in half to show what the hand is doing on the inside! absolutely the BEST on youtube. thank you!
Excellent demonstration. I loved the fact that you cut your pieces to show the inside and how your hands moved along the wall, and secondly the use of clear cylinder, that was genius. Thank you. I learned a lot.
Im pottery student and i think it is a amazing explanation! I appreciated it so much!!! You are a great and generous master! The effort you make to help us understand the process into the cilinder is wonderful! I have all much cleared now.
Thank you for showing us the "how" while explaining the "why" of centering and pulling. So many videos cover only the how (most not very well either). Your video on centering has helped me so much that you now have a devoted follower for life in me!!!! LOL Thanks again and please, please keep the teaching videos coming. Warm regards from Debbie in Florida
Very methodical and useful tutorial, with cross-section and clear glass cylinder used to demonstrate EXACTLY HOW to apply hand and rib pressure to lift a vase. Thank you so much and please continue producing these exceptionally helpful videos.
Thank you so much! I am self--taught and working for about 3 years. I have watched many videos trying to learn the craft and you are the only one who has shown me exact hand and finger placement along with cut-a-ways. Invaluable!!!! Thanks.
Thanks to your instruction, I was able to make the largest thrown pot I've ever made yesterday. It was a saggar for doing reduction firing in the electric kiln. It was basically just a large cylinder with a fitted lid.
Amazing, most effective lesson I ever watched! The clear cylinder was so very helpful. I saved this video to watch over and over again. Thank you so much.
That was the BEST demo I've seen! Loved the stops every step of the way with the slices and the use of the glass cylinder to show what you are doing and with which part of your hands!!!
Mr. Lin, Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge through your TH-cam videos. You are very generous to allow us all to learn from you. I have been throwing pots for three years, but have started taking it more seriously during the past year. Your instruction on how to throw taller cylinders and more challenging shapes is very helpful. I look forward to working my way through your whole video library. Thank you again.
This is by far the best teaching method I have seen. As a total beginner, I have had a lot of disasters. Now I understand more clearly where I am going wrong. Thank you so much for sharing your skills. You are a Master Teacher.
@potterylady1 Not at all, when I started my pottery class everyone was throwing this way in Taiwan. It was when I came to U.S. to see other people throwing using knuckle or sponge. Don't you think when I hold the Plexiglas upside-down my fingers/hands form naturally both inside and outside. Don't you think the outside fingers are more stable when throwing this way?
You're a brilliant teacher, demonstrator and master potter. I thank you and appreciate all your video uploads. You have taught me to be a better potter.
Thank you for this demonstration. I loved how you cut the work in half to show the inside. I watched your video 'throwing a tall bottle' first and wished I could see the inside of the bottle, then i found this. excellent teaching.
Wow! Thank you so very much for the detail you show in your teaching. No other video has answered so many questions. And there's so many more of yours to watch. Very talented. Thank you again. Dave Iserman
All our thank you are warm and sincere, but buying a piece of Hsinchuen's work on Esty is a wonderful way to give back for all we have learned. It would be great if we could empty his Esty shop. Give it some thought. Claire
Cutting it through for better understanding is such a brilliant idea; however, my heart skipped a beat every time you cut through your beautiful work 😛
WOW!!! This video is AHmazing and exactly what I have been looking for!! THANK YOU for explaining each step and hand position clearly, especially by cutting the cylinder in half, and using the clear cylinder, that was SO helpful!!! This is by far THE BEST throwing video I have seen on TH-cam. I too learned the right thumb method when I took classes in France and find it really natural after the first few times, but I like how you position your hand even better than how I learned. Cheers!
I love you’re channel. I started throwing clay last month I watched this vdo over and over again and today I tried pulling up cylinder first time and it worked perfectly. Thank you teacher Lin
This was brilliant! Thank you so much for taking the time to show what you’re doing and the effects it has inside and out. So helpful! The acrylic cylinder was also a great idea. I wished my teacher would take some of your teaching on board.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, teach your technique, & sacrificing your beautiful works for us to get the clearest view of what you've done! THANK YOU! Absolutely amazing!
excellent video and you're a great teacher. you answered so many questions about what's going on inside and with the other hand outside, many thanks for taking the time to give such a thorough lesson.
Wall thickness is something you have to keep up on and practice. If I start to get lazy, you can see it in the cross sections. The damn things don't lie.
I haven’t looked at these in a while, but I find that in the areas where I have trouble, your explanations are key. Thank you so very much for your thorough demonstrations of technique.
I am so thankful for your videos. This is the best explanation/demonstration I have found. The entire collection of your video channel is helpful and masterful. Whenever I am studying pottery on the internet, you are my #1 teacher. Thank you, Hsin-Chuen!
It must be a poor teacher, since this is the very first basic gestures you are taught in any decent pottery school ! Anyway, it is a real pleasure to have it here so clear, detailed, and simple. Well done, hsinchuen lin. Should we call you lin ?
You are so AWESOME!!!! The effort you make to help us understand exactly what you're doing is amazing and very much appreciated!!! You are my absolute favorite- thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! xo
When one watches the video, it seems easy, not because it actually is but because of the teacher's skill and pedagogy. Very interesting, even for people who don't do pottery...
Mr. Lin Thanks for the classes. I learn a lot from you. Im a self educated potter since all I have learned I do it by reading and watching educational videos like yours. The little problem is that I am left handed and I use the left hand outside. Any suggestions for lef handed people like me... Thanks again from Puerto Rico the enchanted island.
Im starting my first ever pottery program in a couple weeks and looking up instructional videos here on TH-cam for reference. By far...this is the best out there! Thank you for posting this!
I am very excited to learn more from you - your technique is so superb! I loved #45 and I will be watching all your other you tubes, as I have only just begun with pottery and don't want to give up. I am a perfectionist and get really down on myself when I see my results, but this gives me hope that it's just clay and I can practice- practice-practice! I love my pottery teacher, she is positive and a great teacher, but this one on one is so awesome. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
At my school in France, we use knuckle for the very first raise or bigger pots, then thumb as you show in the video, then tip of fingers for refining top of bowls and bottle necks. Personnally I am not comfortable with knuckle since it tends to grip and make holes at the bottom of the pot ...
Amazing - i started 12 week classe last week and by miracle made a pot ...yippee. Your lesson has shown me where I am going wrong so thanks very much - your amazing and I look forward to my class this evening to fix my errors ..... hopefully.
Hsinchuen Lin-Thank you so very much for all the tutorials. I have just started out a month ago and your technique and tips are invaluable to my learning process. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you for all your fantastic videos! I have retaught myself to throw based on your methods and it has made all the difference. You are an excellent teacher and a master potter.
Hi Hsin Chuen Lin, thank you so much for your great video!!! It is the Best I've ever seen!!! Could watch your video's for hours and hours.... you are the Best
Pulling with that right thumb, while the hand in extreme supine- what a crazy technique! Although it looks like it'd be awkward, the thumb creates a nice inclined plane to help lift from the bottom. Interesting!
Maestro Lin, mi agradecimiento por esta gran demostración, creo que con esta clase podré resolver el problema que tengo haciendo cilindros. Muchisimas gracias!
love it! you're a true master. not only your throwing is perfect, your didactic leave us no doubts. congrats on the amazing work! I'm very grateful for your lessons.

"This taught me mor in 33 min than my ceramics teacher did in 4 years...THANK YOU!!!"
Hi, thanks for your comment! It was exact my original idea of posting videos to help more people to have a good start in learning throwing on the potter's wheel.
Hsinchuen Lin wow 🤩 just wow 🤩 and wow 🤩 it was amazing 👏 thank you 🙏

Of all the pulling demos I've watched, I've never seen anyone use a plexiglass cylinder to show hand positions. Brilliant! You are a gifted teacher.
Many thanks!
this is absolutely the best video to learn how to lift a cylinder
The slices through the clay and the demonstration with the clear cylinder make it SO much easier to understand. Thank you so much!
This is an incredible video. Thanks for all the great visuals and for sacrificing so many pots!
Best teacher on the net! Thank you.
I have watched a lot of pottery instruction videos over the years, but this is absolutely the best. It has totally revolutionized my throwing.
Good to know! Thanks!
Using the plastic cylinder was ingenious! It made it so i could really see the way you positioned your hands, so helpful! Along with cutting open the cylinder, also very helpful‼👍. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher for all of us that are wanting to become better potters💞❣

Of the MANY cylinder wall pulling demonstrations I have watched, in my opinion, this is, by far, the best.
The clear cylinder showing how the hands are placed is so helpful! this is the best video I've seen on how to pull up a vessel. Thank you!
Did anyone else almost cry every time he cut open his pot to show the inside?
Dochas Williams this is how my teacher teaches in class too lul :(
why do people always cry when it's being cut up?
the walls are so even and the pulls are so uniform--each example he cuts open is better than anything i've ever done.
I was thrilled and grateful. It really helped me understand what he was doing and how.
Yep
loved the clear explanations & the use of the clear cylinder & cutting the piece in half to show what the hand is doing on the inside! absolutely the BEST on youtube. thank you!
This is the best throwing demo I've ever seen.
I couldn't believe you were "destroying" your work step by step. Thank you so very much!
Excellent demonstration. I loved the fact that you cut your pieces to show the inside and how your hands moved along the wall, and secondly the use of clear cylinder, that was genius. Thank you. I learned a lot.
You are such an amazing teacher! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You are very welcome!
Im pottery student and i think it is a amazing explanation! I appreciated it so much!!! You are a great and generous master! The effort you make to help us understand the process into the cilinder is wonderful! I have all much cleared now.
Using the clear plastic cylinder showed the hand movement we needed to know. A very simple but effective idea that does the job. Thank you so much!
老師的每個教學影片真的都好用心。功夫需要的細節都交代得很清楚,作品的細節也都小心處理,是很好的模範!謝謝用心拍攝並分享!
This made me truly understand the mechanics behind throwing... legendary teacher
Thank you for showing us the "how" while explaining the "why" of centering and pulling. So many videos cover only the how (most not very well either). Your video on centering has helped me so much that you now have a devoted follower for life in me!!!! LOL
Thanks again and please, please keep the teaching videos coming.

Best demonstration video out there by far and I have watched a TON at this point. THANK YOU Hsin-chuen!
I remade the video 10 years later with 2 angles. It’s even better. Check out my video #506, 507

This is the best video instruction I've ever encountered for clay work. Beautiful, clear, and really informative.
excellent tutor. Very good speaking voice and your technique of showing what the stages should look like and how to achieve it are brilliant.
I have never seen a more didactic explanation! Thank you so much!!
I learned a new word today. Thank you! 🤗
This is the best tutorial I have ever seen and Mr. Lin you are so patient!!!! 林老師謝謝你錄了這麼好的教學短片你真是很有耐心!!!!
Mr. Lin,

Claire
Cutting it through for better understanding is such a brilliant idea; however, my heart skipped a beat every time you cut through your beautiful work 😛

excellent video and you're a great teacher. you answered so many questions about what's going on inside and with the other hand outside, many thanks for taking the time to give such a thorough lesson.
am i the only one who crys a little on the inside when he cuts something so pretty, that you know you'll never be able to pull up so well?
Wall thickness is something you have to keep up on and practice. If I start to get lazy, you can see it in the cross sections. The damn things don't lie.
YOU ARE A GOOD TEACHER AND I RESPECT THAT.
Excellent tutorial, basically the hands are dance partners in the world throwing.
So talented and so caring to share every single detail of his skill. Master potter !! Thank you
I haven’t looked at these in a while, but I find that in the areas where I have trouble, your explanations are key. Thank you so very much for your thorough demonstrations of technique.
Thank you for teaching for free. Cannot wait for my next lesson to try the skill you taught.
I am so thankful for your videos. This is the best explanation/demonstration I have found. The entire collection of your video channel is helpful and masterful. Whenever I am studying pottery on the internet, you are my #1 teacher. Thank you, Hsin-Chuen!

Has anyone been able to determine what planet this guy is from? It can’t be earth. His talent is truly other worldly.

This never gets old. Thanks again for your detailed instruction.
A truly outstanding video! I keep coming back to watch it again and again. Thank you!
Learning so much, after one class and hours of watching these videos, my technique at open studio was drastically improved.

Very well done demonstration, thank you! I see that it takes slow, steady and stable movements to make pots on the wheel.
Thank you Hsinchuen Lin! Best ever teacher wow 🤩 just wow 🤩 and wow 🤩 it was amazing 👏 thank you 🙏
I've seen a lot of throwing instructions and this is the best.
