OpenMarine - MacArthur Hat Project - A board to connect your Pi to marine electronics

  • UPDATE: Now available to buy from shop.openmarine.net/
    In this video, we get a development board from OpenMarine to test as part of the MacArthur Hat project. Please note that this is still work in progress and the final design could change from what is seen here. All test boards have been assigned and when fully released they will be available from openmarine.net/
    The idea behind the board is that it provides the electronics needed to connect to your boat systems and provide data back into the OpenPlotter software. This board can stay on your boat for years to come, it could support migrations from different platforms or just add functionality to systems you already have. Either way, it's a great piece of hardware to complete the excellent software they have designed.

      Yeah, its a great board and im sure the final product will be a great adition to what they have done so far. Did you catch the Influx video? Is that the same way you set yours up as i think you did that before me?

    Great! Can’t wait for your next video on this! When will this hat be released? I need one! 😃 Will it also work as a multiplexor so NMEA 2k units can listen and talk to other NMEA 0183 units?

      Many thanks for the comments. I’m not sure on Openmarine’s plan for a release date just yet, I will share what updates I can and I would also keep an eye on the website and forums. It will multiplex and support migrations from one network to the other. I’ve done some of this with their software and plugins in my other videos, it would just mean you can use this HAT to connect it all up and not need to build or buy additional electronics. They have done a great job with this hardware.

    fantastic! now that raspberry pi has releaseg the new pi 5 will it be compatible?

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys
      @BoatingwiththeBaileys  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m guessing a few changes will be required to support that. Several new features on the Pi5! I’ve placed an order already for mine.

    Great!! What power supply do you use for raspberry pi and that HAT?

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys
      @BoatingwiththeBaileys  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I purcahsed the power module for the HAT, so that now powers my Pi and you can run it directly from 12v.

    Very informative.
    What screen are you using on your boat?

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys
      @BoatingwiththeBaileys  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Many thanks for your comments. This is the screen www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253289838646?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=sA4xWqdKSHW&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=1XqhIgr5QPm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY although the price has increased from £60 to £90. It’s been reliable and doesn’t use a lot of power.

    Good video! Can anyone make some elecronic for mast (2 cables to mast ..+-48v and ethernet).. and on top have verious devices like radar, wearher sensors,antenas ,light have mini dc/dc konverters but all info goes thrue cat5 cable..
    System is future proff with 48V and info and makes easy felis search... thow on top of mast.. which you would have to do anyway

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys
      @BoatingwiththeBaileys  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thanks, you would need to be careful with power demand running that kind of kit over cat5, it can be done but they tend to run the power over multiple pairs in networking and then you need extra electronics to split power and data back out. Then added complexity of waterproofing all of this.

    My question is not directly related to the HAT, but I'm struggling connecting Seatalk 1 to a RasPi. Do I need an Optocoppler doing so, or is it possible to get Seatalk data via an USB to serial 422 which I bought? I own Raymarine ST60 instruments and have an Multiplayer called Brookhouse on board. Sorry for my newbie question, but I'm quite lost at this stage how to get Seatalk in my Pi. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys
      @BoatingwiththeBaileys  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, You have a couple of options I think. Might need some further details to help if this doesn't work but I've just had a look at that Multiplexer and if it's in the correct place and the seatalk network is connected to it you should be able to connect your serial device to it and get the data in. Have you got anything connected into the RS232 or the RS422 ports on it? Do you know what it's doing? If you go to our website and send us an email, I'll respond so you can share some photos if that helps?
      If you don't have any other way of connecting the Seatalk then the cheapest method with a Raspberry Pi is via an Optocoupler. The MacArthur hat is another option, although slightly more money it gives you loads of options for the future.

    Given that the MacArthur hat is still completely unavailable, how would you set this up without it? I've been waiting a long time for this thing to come out, but at this rat eI don't think they're gonna release it anytime soon to the public.

    • @BoatingwiththeBaileys
      @BoatingwiththeBaileys  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I don’t think it’s far off now. The release of the Pi5 has made them move a couple of components to ensure compatibility. Further info here forum.openmarine.net/showthread.php?tid=4939
      I made boards to connect it up last time which are shown on some of my videos. I think the PICAN-M board is still available for connecting to the N2k network and you can also build a board to connect to seatalk1 that smart sailing did a great video on.
      Really don’t think it’s going to be long away now. It’s worth the wait.
