Here's an important tip: when purchasing resealable outers, make sure you get "seal on bag" as opposed to "seal on flap"...
Seal on-flap will snag your record and leave you screaming, trust me 😖
You're right though, those thin cellophane Japanese style reseals are definitely the best quality to put on expensive records... They actually make older jackets look amazing and refreshed 💯👍
I also recommend changing them every few years just to be safe because all plastic breaks down eventually... 👍❤️
    Cheers!

Some sealed records are worth having just for the fact that they're sealed and thus "add to" a collection of a favorite artist - preserving what the record was like new in a store. I have a few that are never intended to be played. But I agree - most sealed or bagged records should be opened and the vinyl properly cleaned (and rinsed free of any / all agents). Those HDPE sleeves should last many decades without causing any issues. The art framing world has dealt with outgassing issues for many decades. Some of the principles apply well to records. There was a purported run of MOFI sleeves that had problems some time ago, but most I've seen / have do not have fogging issues. I've kept records in VRP polyethylene audio sleeves I bought in the 70's and they are still clean and clear... pushing 50 years now!

I remember reading a thread on the Hoffman forums a few years ago discussing MoFi sleeves. I don't remember the time frame, but apparently MoFi had a huge batch of bad sleeves slip through. It affected both sleeves from record releases and the sleeves they sold separately. Perhaps your Rickie Lee Jones album was from that bad batch. I'd advise everyone to check all their MoFi releases, and every record where they might have used a MoFi replacement sleeve.

All plastic off gas. Softer, bendable plastics off gas more than hard plastic. Polyethylene off gasses methane and ethylene. Both can be harmful.
I haven't used MoFi's polyethylene sleeves, but I do use very similar ones. I also have paper polyethylene sleeves that are branded Realistic and were sold by Radio Shack, which I purchased in the 70s.
Certain compound formulas react differently to each other. We will never know what chemicals make up every plastic. Companies say vinyl, PVC, polyethylene and the real mystery is when they just say "poly".
I've been in the plastics and coatings industry for decades.
I say if you doubt it, throw it out. How much are inner and outer sleeves? Cheap insurance! Worth it, even if it only makes us think we are safer.

Whenever someone gets indignant over someone else keeping their copy of a record sealed, what they are really saying is, "I am jealous yours is sealed and mine isn't, and I want yours to be lowered to the level of mine because I have a severe inferiority complex." And I am someone who frequently opens sealed vintage pressings (albeit, cheap titles).
You have nothing to apologize for. I would just delete their comments.
And that film does look like it is from that inner. I have seen a lot of records from the 80s that had similar plastic sleeves. And with the film mirroring the wrinkles like that. And yes, it always cleans off. Very happy to see this record survived. Time to check my records in MoFi inners, haha. I think moisture often triggers these sleeve breakdowns. But obviously this collection was not affected the same way throughout.

Research needs to be done to determine the environmental conditions that cause or accelerate the sleeve degradation. I suspect high indoor temperatures and high humidity is a factor. Also, I suspect pressure is bad, such as when a large stack of records are stored horizontally, or when a large group of records are stored vertically and leaning at an angle on a wide shelf.

I’m amazed that you would have so many sealed records. My record buying days go back to the early sixties and one thing i learned is to open and play a record right after buying it. Why? There was always a decent chance the record needed to be returned due to excessive surface noise, warpage, etc. Still true today. After a short time, returning one is not possible so you end up getting stuck with it.
Of course I didn’t buy them as “investments”, so maybe that makes the difference in habits.

    • @TheVinylRecordMission
      @TheVinylRecordMission  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I often buy in bulk. Out of that bulk I pick what I’m going to keep, trade and sell. Over the years sealed records had a way of being set aside and building up. I’ve learned a hard lesson. I’m going to open everything. I’ve never been one who intentionally collects sealed records. I do see an investment quality in collecting vintage. It’s like saving money while being able to listen to it. One can’t listen to a savings account balance. Well kept record collections can almost always be sold or inherited by our children. I've also been able to remove 'ghosting' caused by off-gassing using microfibre cloth. Odd that this would happen with MOFI innersleeves, as I have 40+ year-old ECM pressings that don't have any traces of off-gassing. From ~'78 on WEA started pressing ECM releases in the US, and these were packaged using plain rice paper type innersleeves simlar to what MOFI uses.

I believe the newer mofi sleeves aren’t a problem. My mofi sleeve was 13 years old and sealed. I’ve also learned from some very knowledgeable viewers that temperature and storage can trigger severe off gassing. If you have your records jammed too tightly in your shelves PVC inner sleeves and/or outer sleeves will eventually off gas. Smoking environments accelerate and intensify the chemical reaction.

@@TheVinylRecordMission Just a thought, I've got many albums that have the pinkish plastic sleeves and not one has ever "ghosted". Maybe these sleeves are only an issue when the album remaines unopened as the "offgassing" has no where to go. Once opened you have ventilation to vent off any offgassing. And yes sometimes in the manufacturing process they get that look. It doesn't clean off but does not hurt the sound.

thanks Steve, this is a real eye opener and a worry as a collector. i think this also applies to unsealed records that have not been listened to in years. i recently listened to ELP's Tarkus after maybe 40 years and when i took it out of the sleeve, the vinyl was kind of marbled, there were kind of sweat marks all over it. i gave it a good clean with a quality vinyl cleaner and listened to it. sadly it was making a lot of noise thruout (the vinyl was near mint, no scratches, nothing). is this also caused by off-gassing, have you come across this on open records before? any recommendation? i am afraid that this might have also happened to many others i have not listened to in years and there are hundreds...

Only the stiff PVC sleeves off gas. There should be no issues with polythene sleeves. Some of the surface marks observed may be a result of the pressing process. I have come across Mo-Fi pressings as well as others from RTI that have such non audible marks when opened new. The inner sleeves that cause issue from RTI are the now discontinued clear sleeves with a strong pink tint. Left a dust on records that should clean off with an RCM. Personally have not had issues with Mo-Fi inner sleeves. The inners to worry about are from the late 60s and early 70s UK polylined sleeves. I never sold it because it had that haze on both sides and it played with that dull static noise in the background. Now I do not know if it came from the pressing plant like this or if it is this ghosting you are talking about. My question is what is this record worth now and how do you figure the percentage deducted if it if is a rare record and it has ghosting? I think all non-paper sleeves off-gas (inner and outer) because the plasticizers used to keep them soft off-gas. PVC is worse than poly but none of them are 100% stable - I have a theory that they can only off-gas so much before they stop but I’m not a chemist. The reason I think this is because “new car smell” is off-gassing plastic and that goes away with time. Off-gassing dashboard plastic will increase how much the inside of your vehicles’ windshield will fog over but that too lessens over time.
I think another thing that happens is the inner sleeve is pressed against the vinyl when records are stored too tightly and it makes the matter worse. I left a comment on another one of your videos where I said I had hundreds with ghostly waves. Almost all of them were in round-bottom thin poly sleeves and two were in MOFi style sleeves. Give them a little wiggle room, but don’t cram them too tightly. Some viewers have stated that mofi had an issue with a few large runs of their inner sleeves that they have since corrected. No one gave a time frame or years when those sleeves were manufactured and distributed so it’s anyone’s guess. The Big Night is such an awesome movie! First off, welcome to the world of vinyl record collecting. Your best bet is to use HDPE which stands for (high density polyethylene) inner sleeves. They are paper sleeves that are lined with high density polyethylene inside. Also make sure you are not storing your records too tightly in your shelves. Those two things alone should help minimize, if not prevent the irreversible damages caused by off gassing. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment and share your thoughts. ✌🏽

Not sure it its true for other parts of the world but here in Australia buying a record in the 70's & 80's they were never sealed. You had to bring the jacket to the front counter where the staff member would reach out to a rack behind them and pull out the record and inner sleeve and visually chech before slipping it into the jacket and ringing it up for you to purchase. In many respects i wish they went back to that as it would save a lot of heartache with this sort of thing.

If you're a die hard collector of sealed records, you probably won't ever have any intention of cracking them open because ultimately you're buying for the collectability ( and/ or value) and not the sound quality. Unsealing will reduce it's value, so unless the vinyl record sleeve appears warped or damaged you will have no way to determine the condition??..a really odd conundrum indeed...I think this is why I will never collect sealed records.

I thought the Cedars-Sinai t-shirt was a sign you had just escaped from the asylum - KIDDING - it's definitely time folks open their vinyl, especially anything made in the last 20 years as the manufacturers weren't as keen on all the materials (ie inner sleeve materials) being used and their long-term storage effects (clearly).
