As a Canadian, I'm pretty happy overall. I do wish our grocery prices and car fuel prices were lower though. I have a roof over my head, a job, and clean water, so I'm pretty lucky!

The first comment makes me wonder what that person knows about prisons. I've worked for the Department of Corrections for years. That may have been the case decades ago, but not any more. There is no corperation involvement at all. Inmates have school, job skill programs and art/music classes as well as therapy and rehab. They have every opportunity to rehabilitate. It's not 1950 anymore, we aren't selling their labor to build bridges or dig ditches. The only "work" these men and women do are jobs within the prison, such as cleaning, making food in the dining facility, and cutting hair in the inmate barber shop. And believe it or not, they get paid for this. Not much, but considering they are housed and fed for free, they don't need much. All public prisons have a website to check information about how much they spend on their incarcerated people. For example, Illinois prisons spend around $45,000 a year on EACH inmate. I promise you we are absolutely not profiting off of our inmates 😂

I take it you've never worked for a private, for profit prison then? They definitely encourage repeat offenses, mass incarceration, and more.

@MicaiahBaron I have not considering they are rare and make up less than 10% of all prisons at least in the US

Uhhh…you guys do realize Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are different countries, right? You covered Turkmenistan, not Uzbekistan before.
On a different note, it’s an interesting topic for me considering places I’ve been and people I’ve met. I’ve actually been to Afghanistan which is considered to be the most unhappy countries in the world, I served in the army with a guy from Uzbekistan, a couple of my closest friends at work are Dominican and I also know some Salvadorans as well. I will say it was interesting that the Dominican Republic was that high considering it shares a border with Haiti (a very unhappy country) but from what I understand it is very relaxed. El Salvador probably got on the list recently due to the gang crackdown transforming the country into a safe place.
One factor that I think also effects the happiness in developed countries is the also the decline of religion. Atheists can laugh all they want but religious people do live longer and are less likely to have mental health issues. Not only does religion give you something to believe in, but your local church, synagogue, mosque, temple or any other house of worship gives you a local community of people who share your values and gives you a community to be part of.

I saw a crazy video in 2014 about how George Washington never actually existed and it was actually just King George wearing a wig in disguise. I'm wondering if it was an ATC video? I really want to find the original video lol

Whilst trying to be careful how I word this. If like you say everyone having an aligning culture has a lot to do with happiness within a nation. Is it fair to say that a potential reason the UK is so far down this list is to do with the spike in immigration in recent times? It seems like more than ever the country is divided into different sub cultures and we've lost a lot of our collective identity.

Love the dog whistles here. No, immigration isn't the reason people are less happy. Racism definitely would be though.

You might think that but the Nordic Countries normally top the “Most Happy Countries” list and they have the same problem. Countries like Sweden have allowed large numbers of immigrants without actually taking into consideration things like integration or even jobs for the immigrants resulting in large numbers of migrants marginalized and living in slums with high unemployment and high crime rates not to mention poorly integrated with society. (The TH-camr Kaiserbauch actually did a great video on this recently.) Not sure how immigration effects the happiness indexes but it clearly isn’t a big contributor.

@@caseclosed9342 thanks, I'll take a look at that video. Like you said with the Sweden example, I think integration is very important or you're actively creating division with communities. I see a lot of it in the UK unfortunately

    I got to 33 mins…
It’s not rigged against people it’s rigged against a demographic. If your moaning about going to uni for a degree and having to pay for it.. your the problem.
You don’t deserve to go on that experience for free..
also some or most of the courses that uni’s run aren’t worth the tax payers time.
It seems your both an echo chamber. Have u ever tried listening back to your podcasts with the eyes of someone who is right wing (which isn’t a bad stance it’s a different stance).
