  • Step by step how-to video on scribing skirt boards into a marble stairway with steel tread nosing. This method works on any stairway!! Anyone can do this. No tape measure necessary! Practice with a scrap piece first that covers a few steps to get the hang of it. After you see how well the scrap piece fits, you will be extremely confident in scribing the real piece!

    Just wanted to share how I solved the doorway issue in my other post. I used a 10 inch wide strip of 3/8 plywood as a template and attached it to the wall resting on the noses of the treads as in your method, except the lower end rested on the next to last stair nose instead of the last. With the top and bottom of the template marked with masking tape, I then scribed the tread lines per your instructions, then removed the template and cut the lowest scribed line, then slid the template down one full tread depth (11 3/4 in) and reattached it to the wall using the masking tape reference lines. I then scribed the risers per your method, then removed and cut the remaining scribed marks on the template.
    I checked the fit and it was perfect. I then laid the template on the skirt board and marked the cut lines, then slid it down one tread to mark the missing tread line. I cut the skirt board and checked the fit to make sure no adjustments (trimming) were needed, then attached it using narrow crown staples.
    Thanks for sharing your method.

    • @danhall5253
      @danhall5253  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you solved the issue! Sorry I missed your last comment yesterday. Yes there is another method you can use when walls het in the way of sliding the template. Its more tedious but you can get beautiful results. I'll send it to you shortly. Its an old ship building trick that uses a stick with an irregular shape with a point on it. And you can make a map of an irregular object on a piece of stiff paper like ramboard or cardboard and then transfer that to the finished piece. I might make a video demonstrating hiw to do it on stairs someday.

My prior efforts resulted in a lot of wasted time with a very poor fit.
    I tried using a framing square and a Speed Square in combination to transcribe the tread and riser surfaces onto the skirt board. Clumsy and did not result in a good fit. Perhaps a way to build a template??

    @Dan Hall Why do you set the scribe to the bottom tread height and run with it for the rest of them? Bc isn’t the bottom tread 3/4 less or something. Or do you reset the scribe for every other tread ? Thanks

    • @danhall5253
      @danhall5253  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming the finished floor is installed at the landing of the stairway, all steps should be relatively the same. If you have a weird scenario where the bottom step us significantly shorter than the rest, then mark your scribe on step 2. Dont reset the scribe. The scribe represents the distance that your skirt board will melt into the stairway. If you reset the scribe for every step, you will have bad results. Try it if you need confirmation lol.

    hi,great video. exactly the info I was searching for. quick question_ I see how you marked out and scratched the riser and tread. but what happens if each step isn't uniform. if that is the case should I use a different strip of wood with the pin for each step? Cheers Dan

    • @danhall5253
      @danhall5253  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Daniel O'Connell if the steps are really out of whack (concrete steps for example) take the stick and mark every step on the stick. there will be several lines on the stick now. Drill on the line that represents the longest tread/ riser. In other words, the mark on the stick furthest away from the end that is touching each step. This one mark will work for the full section of steps. Imagine a piece of wood melting into the stairs, and the mark on the stick represents how far the piece of wood will "melt". The wood has to "melt" into the stairs at one equal measurement from top to bottom (the mark on the stick being the one equal measurement). That's kind of how I wrap my head around the concept.

    • @duaynenaugle4186
      @duaynenaugle4186 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A simpler way would be to just cut a piece of wood the same size as your riser or just a bit bigger. Lay it on the tread and mark the top of it. Do that for all treads. It will copy any variations in the treads.

    • @duaynenaugle4186
      @duaynenaugle4186 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ToffiTube this video goes about it differently than I would. I place the skirt board in the same manner. Tack it to the wall , measure the highest rise and cut a piece of plywood the same size and place it on each tread and transfer the marks to the skirt board. Not just the top and bottom , all of them. Now pick up your level and plum up each riser, cut and slide into place. Your treads should be all good. If your rise is out some just take a small block equal to the size of the largest gap and mark each riser with the same block , cut all and you should have a good fit.

    I have an aok staircase with no skirt board. The treads are bullnosed and this makes for a difficult skirt conversion. I don't want to wallpaper against the risers and treads, but this project seems impossible because of the bullnose risers.

    • @danhall5253
      @danhall5253  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LostInMySpace in step 13 I used a piece of nosing for tracing. Since you don’t have that you will have to cut out a template that matches the shape of your nosing. It might take a few tries but try to cut the shape of your nosing into a piece of 1/4” plywood. Eventually you will get the exact shape of your nosing and then use that to trace your nosing on each step. I hope this helps.

    Unfortunately, the treads in the stairwell we're looking to do this in protrude a bit past the riser AND they're rounded. Makes the project much more challenging (which is why we've delayed it for so long).

    • @danhall5253
      @danhall5253  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chrissy Robbins that’s okay you can still do it. The treads protruded past the risers in the video as well. The name of the rounded part that sticks out is called the bullnose. When you’re marking the risers with the stick, once you reach the bullnose just put the stick against the face of each bullnose and make a small mark. The small mark will protrude past the mark of the riser. This is explained in step 12. Now you need to make a custom cutout of the bullnose with a scrap piece of wood that wraps around the bullnose since you don’t have a scrap piece of bullnosing. Just keep cutting a piece to fit around the bullnose with a jig saw until it wraps around perfectly. You can now use this piece to trace the bullnosing. I hope this helps.
