How important is it you choosing the material and not the client from a box store

Lol you trim guys are super technical and detailed, even ones who cut corners, but you are top shelf far as your level of quality...
I'm a cheater, I've worked a little bit here and there for 30 years and I've stolen so many techniques from subs of all kinds, so I know how to do everything, just not as efficient as if I did only that for 20 years... Lol
I've did trim for about a month for a home builder in the south and omg straight garbage from framing to paint, the trim company wants two man crews to get two 1500-2500 sq ft houses trimmed out in a day, 🤣🤣 yeah, nope... I'm a old dog, I put in work, but I'm not a hebrew slave...
And because the demands you obviously knows what happens to quality... So I appreciate seeing a guy set up saws and sanders and takes time to run trim perfectly at every joint... Respect...

@@neilraymondraymond1447 a private trim guy probably gets lumber from a mill or a bender who does, but most your major builders use box store quality, and even if not their material sits out in the elements in a garage without a door, and remaining boards get passed down to unfinished houses in said track of homes...
If you doing it yourself and want quality find a private vendor, the box stores sell banana boards, they should be embarrassed with this last price hike, because you can look at their shelving, they don't care about level, lol...

I've watched a handful of channels on here, yours is very well presented and we have very similar techniques for most of the videos I've seen, as I am sending some newer workers of mine to watch your videos to learn things they don't know or some good tips. Keep up the great work!
P.S. Complementary angles equal 90 and supplementary angles equal 180. And I'd like to hear you call the horizontal cut a level cut to component you plumb cut

There are so many ways to trim stairs. It's clear that the most important thing is to think about how all the stair cases and base transitions will intersect before you start. Thanks for sharing your techniques Spencer, always a professional...

Excellent video Spencer. I am an old school carpenter and used to install skirt boards just like you said. But with todays technology I use the Bosch digital level only because I don't have a Stabilia with the same results. I loved the biscuit idea for those weird joints. Back in the day we just glued and nailed and eventually the joint would crack over time. Thanks again for your videos, they are fantastic!!!!

I’m surprised that I never see hardwood floors in any of your houses that is basically a giving here in Jersey. And I guess the floor guys don’t mind undercutting everything? Seems to me it’s easier to install floors and set on top. Except carpet of course. Keep up the great work.

    Spencer,
Great info and a fan of the channel. Given the fact that no stair is framed perfect why not just do it the old fashion way and pin the skirt to the wall on the top of the nosing of the treads and trace it out with a level. Plumb off every riser an level off every tread, or split the difference because no stair is perfect. Well very few stairs are framed perfect. Either way it seems like you would have to make adjustments after the first attempt and you would save a bunch of time doing it the old fashion way. In race to a perfect product the old fashion way would win ever time. Great content buddy, just curious about this one.

Hi Spencer; I have a finished oat staircase leading y to the second floor of my home. The treads and risers butt right against the wallboard, and therefore, no skirt board. It doesn't look as formal of an entryway that I'd like to see. The treads have a rounded bullnose. There is no wall on the right side of the stairs, just spindles. Is there a way to get great results in adding a skirt board after the fact on the leftside of the stairs, or do the treads, and risers have to be pulled up, and new skirt board installed that way, then add new treads and risers, and stain those? BTW THUMBS UP!!

  • @juliandancingshadow4959

Another great tutorial. If people don't want to splurge on a Stabila digital, why not just use the angle found by laying a smartphone down ontop of the level. Is that not going to be accurate enough?

I am a homeowner trying to do my own base trim. I have a room that is a step down from the main floor. I have baseboard installed with a piece of skirting bridging the two levels. I want to put some base cap on top and I'm confused as to whether I just miter the angles or if I need to bevel the pieces as well (or instead of). I have a compound miter saw with a single bevel. Any help is appreciated.

We need to redo our skirt boarding. We have 13 stairs a landing and then another set of 5 I believe. It’s an L shaped. The top of the skirtboard is touching the stairs at the lowest point and then increases as it goes up. It barely touches the baseboards. They’re higher. It looks awful whomever did it. I don’t know where to start. I think we’re going to have to remove the hardwood threads and tear our whole staircase apart. I have no idea what can be done to make this look better at all. Are you willing to view an image of our stairs that would be great.

Thinks are so different here in Canada. The stairs seem to be much better built with the stringer already attached from the factory so no need to do all this extra work
Also the stringer is an inch and a half thick which gives it a much better look in my opinion and you just wrap the base on top of the stringer.

What material and dimensions did you use for the skirt boards? Looks like some sort of tongue and groove poplar? Idea for new vid: How about a video of closed end treads where the balusters go down to a bottom that is parallel with the banisters rather than going down to open tread/risers. Thank you and keep up the great ocd meticulous work!

Great job from an old stair guy. Only difference I see is where you notch your upper skirt when turning a corner, I keep it the same and build up a small triangular piece on the lower level

Excellent presentation,! I think you are right about the level, really efficient, still like the old way fundamentals for thorough understanding.

Horizontal cut is the seat cut right Spence, just like a rafter?

I thought true skirt boards were notched around every tread and riser to clean up the gaps and make a better finish?

It's not a factor, just regional differences on how things are done. Leaving a space allows for a much faster install with the same result.

    Nice job as always
We use a framing square to mark the plumb and level cuts on the skirts by the rise and run. You can double both dimensions and be more accurate as long as the rise is less than 8".
On enclosed stairs once we have the skirt board angles cut we tack them on the wall and scribe the rise and run with a scrap of the riser material. Then we cut the notches in the skirts and install them on top of the risers which can be a rough dimension slightly short of the wall because the skirt board covers ~3/4". Anywhere the scribed skirt board isn't tight to a riser gets a shim driven between the riser and the stringer. This method lets saves the time of custom cutting each riser. Additionally the 3/4 space above the run makes it possible to get a shim in between the skirt and the sheetrock to close a gap when you miscut a tread.

Thank you for doing this video. I got to do this on my basement’s stair so I will definitely will be re-watching it later on.

Great video as per the usual, I love the skirt transition right into the baseboard we usually make a plinth block for the transitions

Those blocks are also an answer to traditions with different thickness from skirt vs up graded trim

I've got existing stairs with no room for skirt to go behind. Is there a way to install skirt on top?

    • @InsiderCarpentry
      @InsiderCarpentry  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, you just have to notch everything out.

I'm not a Carpenter but just a Homeowner, and isn't a Homeowner also a Carpenter? If he wants to learn the ins and outs of what he does not understand he is. Easy and well explained for the Homeowner to understand. Now I need to find a video of yours to explain pinch dogs. I know biscuits but want your easy explanation of watching you install them for these skirt boards. Great New Channel I found. Subbed

Excellent video. I didn’t realize framers leave the gap for full piece of skirt. I thought finish carpenters scribed and zig zag cut each step. The video I really need is my condo stairs were tiled horizontally to the drywall walls, enclosed steps both sides no railing. I want to add skirts and it’s going to mean creating templates 🥴. I am a weekend warrior woodworker and it’s intimidating. May cut and tape lots of paper pieces and peel off as one and transfer to 16ft skirt for zig zag cutting 🥴

Why do you cut a skirt board? If you have room why not just use a 1x12 and slip it in between the wall and stringer? Do you need all those 37 and 53 degree cuts? The end result might look cleaner
