    I did this exact same thing in 2020 and have an exceptional stand of switchgrass this year as well. Don't listen to the other deer habitat guy on TH-cam that say's this doesn't work, he's 100% wrong.

    As always I love the way you present the information, I'll be doing this this spring

    Very innovative approach. Like Needs More Toys I tried the approach of nuking an area all summer then oats in fall and then frost freeze during winter. The next spring my switch barely came up. Admittedly I wasn't patient for the sleep, creep, leap thing... This idea would be great to ensure it doesn't feel like a year is lost like the way I did it. Going to try this for sure! Thanks Jake!

    Thanks Jake…. Been waiting for the update. Think I’ll try it next spring.

    Cool. We all learn through experimentation.

    Thanks for the update on that project
    I’m trying to frost seed 4 acres of switch this year , kinda nervous because I hear how hard it is to grow switch , if frost seed doesn’t work I’ll try this method! Frost seeding is done for now and I’ll do the weed control in the spring.

    A nice informative video. Thank you. 👍🇺🇸

    I found it interesting that you planted switch successfully in May rather than frost seeding. My frost seeded switch was a complete bust. Nothing came up. I may try your method as I love Sudan grass screens but prefer a perennial switch.

      Because it was a dual planting of an annual plot screen and switchgrass I planted in May.

    Very impressive! Love the time lapse and now I think I’m going to be trying this 😎😎

      I heard maybe this wasn’t a good method but I think the fact that it’s only 10 feet wide allows sun to get down through the sorghum canopy. Sorry if I missed.. what was your seeding rates?

    Jake, what did you use for fertilizer year 1 at planting time? Did you hit it later in the year with any fertalizer? Thank you for sharing the videos - Travis from WI.

    Really good stuff, Jake. Everything I’ve been told/read about switchgrass says if you plant it with another screening, the SG will get shaded out and die. That didn’t seem to happen to you.

      Thank you, I've followed this same process in two different locations over 10 years apart with nearly identical great results.

      @jimandtararaddatz5712 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake, you think I can get same results using HD with cave in rock?

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimandtararaddatz5712 Yes, If you have fairly good soil & do a good job with your initial pre-planting weed control.

    Great info Jake! How does would the soil need prepping if you don't have a disc or drill? I'd like to go this route with my first screening project.

    New to screening , wanting to try Sorghum Sudangrass around the edge of the plot about 5ft wide , this will be next /close to woods . Will it grow think I can get by with as little as 5 ft height ?

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      S/S and other sorghum screens like abundant sunlight, if you dont have it your screen wont grow as well as it could. 5 feet is a little thin, id suggest 12-15 ft as a minimum.

    I do have both hd screen and cave in rock. Switch seems tough to grow. Your opinion do you like the he screening more and does it hold up well in the winter.

    Awesome thanks for update. Glad to see this method worked and plan to do this spring in Central MN. What seed rate per acre did you use for Switchgrass and Sorghum?

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      10 pounds/acre Switchgrass, 10-12 pounds/acre hybrid sorghum. It's covered in last years planting video; th-cam.com/video/vzWzPC-n8cg/w-d-xo.html

    What was your herbicide of choice and timing of application prior to planting the switch grass/plot screen combo? Did you spray after tillage? It sounds like you applied a broadleaf herbicide at some point after planting as well? Thanks

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Standard glyphosate application 10 days prior to the initial soil working & planting, I used 2-4d in early July along the edge of the alfalfa & screen to set back some broadleaves that were working their way in.

    Great innovation! Makes sense to do. So did the switch germinate and grow good with the plot screen in 2020? It's hard to see on my phone here.? Thx Jake for this video. I'm going to do it this way👍

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3

      Yes, the switchgrass was 3 feet tall in the sorghum by September of 2020.

    Looks like a very good method to jump start that switch, going to do this next spring.Would You stay with the same variety of switchgrass seed?

  • @paulsipe8481
    @paulsipe8481 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What was your seed rate with doing the mix?

    • @habitatsolutions360llc3
      @habitatsolutions360llc3  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hybrid sorghum @ 10-12 lbs/acre, Cave-in-rock switchgrass @ 7-8 lbs/acre. Some follow up S/G frost seeding may be required the following spring should some sorghum crowd the switchgrass.

      Tried it this year. It was pasture grass that I sprayed once then tilled. A few weeks later i seeded in early June. I didn’t drag it in but cultipacked it then sprayed with gly and simazine. Got some weeds but a lot of switch that is a bit over 2 feet in September. This is my new method for switchgrass. Thanks!
