What really P--ses me off! is that Jackie Trent, the wonderful, talent songwriter co-wrote this song, and many, many songs, but Hatch won't mention it ever. Jackie got short-changed, but those who knew her talent and loved her, more than most of the 60s singers, know she was a dynamo in this duo. She ought to have her name in the songwriters hall of fame!!

Saw a documentary years ago in which Jackie Trent remembered that every time they wrote a song together, Hatch would say "Another one for Petula". That would be enough to piss ANYONE off.

Thanks for your excellent comments hatch was a hypocrite and prick Jackie got him on new faces. Jackie was virtually a neighbour of mine Clark hardly ever spoke to her. She did not know that it was Jackie who was the writer of her big hits Not hatch he tried to claim all of the copyrights to the songs Jackie wrote after she had passed away. But lost the case. Don’t mess with a stokie woman and a beautiful one at that and a fantastic singer ❤️.

Petula mentions Jackie Trent as a writer, thankfully.

I graduated from high school in June 1965 so Pet Clark's "Downtown," and so many others, were just beginning and I always enjoyed this lady's singing. A bit amazing though to discover that she was born in 1932! I hope she lives forever, her music and her presence (on television & radio) always put a smile on my face.

I met Petula Clark in 1987 at The Imperial Room in The Royal York Hotel. She was amazing. Got to meet her backstage and she signed my "Downtown" LP which I still have today. I also saw her last year at Casino Rama and she was just as great. Sadly though, she didn't stay to sign any autographs.

one day I started playing Petula's "Downtown" in my Cafe, and a bunch of punks with mohawks came in and starting dancing and singing along with the song. I was like...."What the !$@$#?"
Just goes to show that Petula and her Downtown Music is Timeless!

@Chattee41 Rumour has it that when Petula helped a relatively unknown Welsh singer, Roddy Llewelyn, by having him perform on her tv show, circa 1974, it didn't go over too well with the House of Windsor as the same man was apparently romantically involved with the then married Princess Margaret. If that really IS the reason behind Pet not being given the title of Dame, then the Queen must have a very long memory and must be rather petty as well.

Easy for you to say, b/c she also doesn't get enough recognition here in the States today, unlike in her '60s and '70s heyday. She's actually quite effervescent as anyone can right away see here, plus really knows quality taste in choosing uplifting melodies. :)

song'. I've been wanting the cd they feature in this interview for a while, about a year. Trying to find the extra cash. My mum loves petula too. I'm 20 in a few months and I've liked petula all my life. I grew up with old songs so like that sort of music most of all :)
Agnetha faltskog is my first favourite, followed be petula and then Connie Francis

Most Hall of Fame's and national honors are popularity contests, and somewhat and politics can effect it. I assume that the Queen likes Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield. However, if England is proud of their accomplishments and would like them to receive more global recognition, honoring them with Dame status, might be appropriate.

In my opinion, Petula and Dusty Springfield were the best female singers from the UK, although I prefer Petula's music. Shirley Bassey was outstanding at interracting with the audiences, but Petula and Dusty sound better to me overall than Shirley and Julie Andrews. Everything is political, and in my opinion, Petula deserves to be a Dame as much as Shirley and Julie Andrews, and she is at least as good as Sir Tom Jones, and Sir Cliff Richard.. She should also be in rock and roll hall of fame.

@VealParmigiana why is it politically motivated that petula has not been made a dame?
