Petula Clark and her music are simply woven into the fabric of my life. I can't remember a time when I didn't love her songs, did not think her voice exquisite, or wait for her to come on the radio and sing everything I adored. She IS brilliant, and a true gem of a woman. Her insight here is something quite rare, and I hope with all my heart that I someday have the privilege of meeting her in person. She is blessed by God with a remarkable gift, and she has not stopped using it for a moment.

It's amazing that Petula is older than Julie Andrews but Petula can really do rock pop songs or blues type songs authentically. Julie Andrews is more typically of her generation in her musical style.

If Petula was 7, and Julie was younger... how old was she, or is she lying about her age now?

@@tristanprice7236- they sang in the same concerts in 1945. Petula was 13 and Julie 10. Because Pet remained petite she became 'stuck' as a child actress throughout her young years and fated to sing mainly 'novelty' numbers. Julie shot up to 5'8" (1.73m) - the average male height at the time - and thus avoided the child star stereotype and became known as a superlative stage singer in major stage musicals. Pet's singing career had drifted until the fortuitous collaboration with Tony Hatch made her a pop superstar at the time of the British invasion although she was already 32 (but kept her youthful image).

@@chrisnorton4382 But of course, Petula was a massive star in France from the late 50s, although she had a fairly quiet period in England, being a bit 'has beenish'. You know, the singer you mum and grandma liked in England although she was a teen pop star in France and Canada (and all over Europe). As you say, Downtown changed all that and she became a 60s pop superstar all over the world.

@@davie12 - I was not quite a teenager back then but Petula was put in the same category as Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey. The first girl 'pop' star I remember was young Helen Shapiro who surprisingly vanished from the 60s charts (because I quite liked her) and was replaced by Cilla, Lulu and Sandie Shaw. (I could never stand Cilla, but there you go). Petula never got the 'pop' adulation in the UK that she got in the USA or Europe. As you say, she seemed part of the old guard.

@@chrisnorton4382 It must have been hard to shake off the "Little Shoemaker" reputation from only 10 years before! And your gran saying... "oh yes, she's nice dear. I remember her in The Huggets". That's probably why she felt so liberated in France, where she was able to be Pétula Clark, pop singer.

Petula Clark was thirty-six here. The year before she had had a hit with “I Know a Place” obviously written from a teenager’s perspective and presumably intended for teenagers-rather condescendingly, in fact. (“All around there are girls and boys/It’s a swinging place, a cellar full of noise.”). In the accompanying video she is shown essentially pretending to be a teenager. I’m guessing it’s this sort of thing that elicits the interviewe’r’s otherwise curious obsession.
