J, sadly this happens ALL the time. My girls are completely opposite in looks than I am (lighter, extremely long thick curly hair and green eyes). I have had strangers and cashiers walk up to me and say, "That's why I want to have a mixed baby too. Cause they gone have "good"hair, colored eyes and be light skinned (not a typo)!" Mouthes drop when I explain that my kids father, my husband, is Black. I have also been "questioned" about why I only buy my girls Black dolls. Simply because it is a reflection of who they are. I'll admit that when I was a teenage I subscribed to a lot of those thoughts and feelings. I called it "preference" and I would say things like "i just relate to them more" "we have more in common" or "I just happen to be around them" . But in all honesty it had a lot to do with the way I saw myself and the way I saw them. We are all indoctrinated with the believe that white is right and white is beautiful. It's everywhere you look from little children's cartoons all the way to beauty pageants and nearly every model you see. It wasn't until I got to college and really started to learn the true history of my people that I recognized our greatness and how beautiful we truly are. I said all of that to say give people time. Yes. it's weird to just pick somebody because of their race. All white folks don't have good credit...they aren't all sweetness and light. People are individuals and we KNOW there is ratchet in EVERY color (lol) as much as there is good in every color. For me, I prefer to date outside of my race (I am :) black), but it doesn't necessarily have to be a white man. I lean more towards Hispanic men, lighter skin black men or tan white men; I guess I enjoy the middle of the color spectrum. However, I would not pass up an attractive black man, if there was a mutual interest/attraction. My most recent "ex" was a man of color. In my mind, I think "preference" should be thought of like ice cream. Not every last black person who exclusively date outside of their race and associate outside of their race, are doing it purely because of self-hatred. I can testify for this. Justin, I knew that you were going to come up with a video about dating and race. The West Coast is a different world from the South. There are a good number of interracial couples in the South, but not at the level that it is on the West Coast. When I first moved to Northern Cali 8 years ago, it seemed so different to me to see so many interracial couples of any combination of black, brown, white, yellow, red, dark brown, orange, and tan that you can think of. Even friendships can be different from back South. I have a black co-worker whose 3 best friends are Hispanic, white, and Asian. It is like taking the show Girlfriends and making all 4 women a different race. That is common here. Living in Atlanta and DC, I dated AAALLLL black women and couldn't look at anything else. But I will admit, since moving to NoCal, I myself have dated white, Asian, Hispanic, Arab, and East Indian...not because of their race, but because of what they were about and giving me a chance. I have also dated plenty of black women here and will never said that I will not date black women. That is crazy. A lot of people who ONLY date outside their race hate their race and / or have been scarred mentally. I don't see it as self-hate, that is reserved for folks who dye their hair blonde and/or wear color contacts...but that is another story. J, sadly this happens ALL the time. My girls are completely opposite in looks than I am (lighter, extremely long thick curly hair and green eyes). I have had strangers and cashiers walk up to me and say, "That's why I want to have a mixed baby too. Cause they gone have "good"hair, colored eyes and be light skinned (not a typo)!" Mouthes drop when I explain that my kids father, my husband, is Black.

I'll admit that when I was a teenage I subscribed to a lot of those thoughts and feelings. I called it "preference" and I would say things like "i just relate to them more" "we have more in common" or "I just happen to be around them" . But in all honesty it had a lot to do with the way I saw myself and the way I saw them. We are all indoctrinated with the believe that white is right and white is beautiful. It's everywhere you look from little children's cartoons all the way to beauty pageants and nearly every model you see. It wasn't until I got to college and really started to learn the true history of my people that I recognized our greatness and how beautiful we truly are. I said all of that to say give people time. For me, I prefer to date outside of my race (I am :) black), but it doesn't necessarily have to be a white man. I lean more towards Hispanic men, lighter skin black men or tan white men; I guess I enjoy the middle of the color spectrum. However, I would not pass up an attractive black man, if there was a mutual interest/attraction. My most recent "ex" was a man of color. In my mind, I think "preference" should be thought of like ice cream. I LOVE strawberry and will go to it often (when available), but I am not AFRAID of trying something new or feel I am above taking free ice cream of a different flavor. My sum up is if you are fortunate enough to find someone who will love and accept you, faults and all, you've found something special. Not every last black person who exclusively date outside of their race and associate outside of their race, are doing it purely because of self-hatred. I can testify for this. There's some of us that does it because of the constant hate and emotional damage we've received by blacks. Justin, I knew that you were going to come up with a video about dating and race. The West Coast is a different world from the South. There are a good number of interracial couples in the South, but not at the level that it is on the West Coast. When I first moved to Northern Cali 8 years ago, it seemed so different to me to see so many interracial couples of any combination of black, brown, white, yellow, red, dark brown, orange, and tan that you can think of. Even friendships can be different from back South. I have a black co-worker whose 3 best friends are Hispanic, white, and Asian. It is like taking the show Girlfriends and making all 4 women a different race. That is common here. Living in Atlanta and DC, I dated AAALLLL black women and couldn't look at anything else. But I will admit, since moving to NoCal, I myself have dated white, Asian, Hispanic, Arab, and East Indian...not because of their race, but because of what they were about and giving me a chance. I have also dated plenty of black women here and will never said that I will not date black women. That is crazy. A lot of people who ONLY date outside their race hate their race and / or have been scarred mentally. I don't see it as self-hate, that is reserved for folks who dye their hair blonde and/or wear color contacts...but that is another story. I understand the scarring (I used to be turned down a lot because I am 5'7"), but people have to learn that not every person in a race (or gender) is the same.
