    Also, 420HC is a crazy versatile steel. In my nerdy steel test, I compared the bos treat to leathermans standard treat, and the Bos cut about twice as much rope : th-cam.com/video/aIpIZ-YCtRk/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Guys.... Just thought I'd add that 420HC is a pretty tough steel because it has lower carbon and therefore isn't brittle... it's better for thinner blades as it will bend rather than break. Because of the low carbon it's pretty rust resistant because there's more chrome left over that doesn't get involved in the "carbide" formation to protect the blade from rust. And oddly enough properly heat treated 420HC can hold a pretty good edge because it's so tough rather than because it's so hard.... Yes, a 420HC working edge is most likely not like the edge you will get on m390... it's not going to keep a super keen edge for nearly as long, but if someone can live with an edge that won't split hairs but will still cut paper or meat, 420 will keep a reasonably sharp working edge a long time... It's kind of like the difference between a shark and a snapping turtle... both with take your fingers off. the shark teeth slice while the snapping turtle kind of powers (gums) through.
    Just for fun check out Zapp LC200N it's a supersteel with only .3% carbon. Yes it has nitrogen instead of vanadium, but still it's supposed to be pretty good in terms of edge retention without all of the carbides and it's got great rust resistance too...
    Lastly, minor rolls in 420HC can be straightened with a kitchen steel or even stropped straight again.
    Cheers
    RJ

    so I did some edge retention tests with cardboard, and my link outperformed all the 8cr knives I tested by about 15%. which is crazy because I put it up against several types of grinds.
    now this doesn't say a ton because cardboard is very inconsistent as a test medium. but I have never had an 8cr knife cut the same linear amount of cardboard as the link.
    I got the dividend in the mail yesterday, so I can see if my results are consistent.
    in the end. Kershaw is working some magic on that 420 at that price point because it beat my tenacious by almost 20 linear feet of cardboard before they stopped cutting paper.

    • @BirdShotIV
      @BirdShotIV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's kind of what we hear, surprisingly good performance for 420hc

    Hey do you guys feel like the speedsafe on the Cryo is a bit stiff? My Cryo flips out well and smoothly but the flipper tab almost hurts to flip. I've flipped the OSO Sweet and the Leek from Kershaw and both of those flippers are way softer/easier to flip. Is there anything I can do to mine to help it? Oh and the thumbstud is almost impossible to use unlike my Blur. Thanks guys! Love the videos!

    • @BirdShotIV
      @BirdShotIV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do agree the Cryo is stiffer than average. I suppose the spring could be bent slightly but I've never tried it.

    Nice video & information. I have been seeing all those mirror polished blades showing up on your channel lately. I was thinking they have to be running out of the supplies to produce the mirror edges on all those blades. You've answered my question in this video. lol

      we have plenty of films, it's a bit of a pain swapping them and I got lazy lol. The translucent Arkansas stone finish and stropping really does do a respectable job though.

    SpeedSafe is the reason I have spent the family fortune on knives this past year. I didn't spend it all on Kershaw SS, but the OSO Sweet, Piston, and Cryo are what fed into my early addiction. It is a cool way for novices to get into flippers.

    Gotta love the speedsafe/thumb stud combo on the Blur. I miss mine and will likely end up getting another one. I respect Kershaw a lot and they make some very nice USA knives for the price. Even some of their Chinese made models are pretty good.
    Last year I went to Kershaw (I live in the area) to get a speed assist issue I was having resolved, didn't want to fiddle with it myself. So I brought it to the service dept, and like 10-minutes later it was handed back to me good as new!

    I have less than 10 speed assist knives from Kershaw, 2 came out of the box flawed and can't deploy properly. What I really hate about the speed assist design is the spring functions both as opening assist and closed detent, so if the spring came out not right, the whole knife is not functional(as I can't fix the flawed knife by just taking out the spring and treat it as a manual folder).

    • @BirdShotIV
      @BirdShotIV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that sucks. We have actually never had a flawed speedsafe

    • @9SS94Cr
      @9SS94Cr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can tolerate the sloppy QA for the budget price. But I can't get over the fact that the whole knife relies on that spring to work. I've seen people break the spring bar over time too. Call me unimpressed. If Kershaw can just make a detent mechanism separated from the spring, then I'll have no complaint.

    I love 420hc, it's one of my favorite steels for its edge retention and ease of sharpening. I did a series of edge retention videos where I found it to outperform 154cm and a bunch of other steels and it kept up with s30v. There's a German metallurgist named Roman landes who also finds it to perform well too but you'd have to be able to read German. Also china is buying American steel so if you get Chinese steel you might actually be buying American steel.

      Big Perm If you’re looking for fast deployment from Kershaw assisted knives, I would recommend the leek, al mar am-3 and al mar am-4, dividend, blur, pico, and there’s some new ones out as well. Really there are a ton of them that are pretty fast, just look up the speedsafe knife catalog and then watch TH-cam videos on each one and see for yourself which one would suit your needs. My fastest speedsafe is definitely the Kershaw leek though, hands down

    I use fixed blades and one of my favorite steels is Gerber's USA 420, it is a very forgiving steel and if sharpened right it holds a great edge. I'm not sure if Kershaw,Buck and Gerber get their 420 from the same USA source but it seems that way to me, all three companies USA 420 is highly reliable. I've been thinking about getting Gerber's USA made Down Range series auto, its a pretty beefy knife I like tough blades, weights never really bothered me much. Gerbers Premium Gator that comes in a sweet leather sheath is also pretty dang cool its in S30V, it has that grandpa look about it classic style very nice.....Their factory is just down the highway from me that's a plus😉

    I have the AL version. It was one of the first "real" knives (as in "not M-Tech") I bought when I first started collecting. I've acquired something like 30 knives since then, and this is still one of my favorites. Very satisfying "thwack" too, in FunkMaster Frankie's terms.
    The steel really isn't bad. I use it and my Tenacious a lot to break down boxes, and the Link's edge has always gone further. Maybe it's the geometry...maybe it's the heat treat or something in the composition, but it's always beaten the Tenacious in terms of retention--and I have two of each knife. I'd take the Link over the Tenacious any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

    I've found there's a big difference in heat treat done by different companies Spyderco's 8cr performs a lot better than some others I've tried and that must come down to the heat treat if they're chemically identical.

    • @BirdShotIV
      @BirdShotIV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @SuperMurrayb
    @SuperMurrayb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is good discussion but your chart is missing something very important when trying to predict the performance of a knife blade. Most steels used in third-world countries contain a lot of impurities. Those steels often contain recycled material from various sources and they add undesirable things to the metal. For steel from North American or European source those numbers means something but not so much for most Asian-source steels. There are labs that can test the steel with an Atomic Emission analyzer to confirm their claims. I have several Buck and Gerber knives made from 420 HC steel and they all hold an edge just fine. Forty years ago 440A (about the same edge retention as 420 HC) was the most common steel for decent knife blades and 440C was the fancy stuff. Even today 420 HC is a decent steel for a knife blade and I would not hesitate to recommend it to a friend.

    Almost lost the EDC yesterday, panicked when I walked out and it wasn't in the right front. Made my way back and discovered that "The Borrowers" had not seized it. I'd have been pissed had it disappeared, but it fits into this category. Not a one-off 10,000 dollar zircon-encrusted damasko-balisang but something that's durable, opens the box and won't necessitate hospitalization if lost. To quote "Linc" from Mod Squad, "You Dig?"

    That's weird. I have two CRKT GSDs. Both of mine have good flipping action. Actually the detent is pretty strong on them, it can make your finger sore after prolonged flipping or playing with it. I don't get why I have seen some people make negative comments about that one and the Remedy, another all steel flipper by Liong Mah and CRKT. Besides being heavy, I think they are good knives for the money, if you get them on sale like I did. I mean putting materials aside the designs are very good. I like the Remedy even better of the two. Back when the GSD was new, it was highly regarded in the CRKT Facebook group's

    BS4- U-571? That's about 300 meters underwater and watch out for depth charges. 420HC on Buck 110 with Bos heat treat is good. The House of Blades aluminum version comes with some steel you may have mentioned last year called S35vn. Bird, any fun facts? I'm not crazy about SpeedSafe,, but HoB version was very cool with the patriotic color schemes. Not bad for $80.

    If I remember correctly, there is a S35VN Link also. The blur is also US made with good sandvik steel for 50 bucks, so I don't see why they put 420HC. in the link. My experience with 420HC is good from my leatherman wave though in a year of it being my primary blade. No chips or even rolls in it and decent edge retention. BTW is that Nick's blur and when is your review coming?

    • @BirdShotIV
      @BirdShotIV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they use the 420HC to be 100% American made. That was Nick's Link in this vid, we did our official Link review last year

    The heat treat is good....however...
    when companies grind down profile often time eliminates the heat treat due to inadaquient use of quench bath during the process. This makes blades fragile.

    Yeah, about the Surgery. It's Tendinosis on Top of some Arthritis in my Right Wrist. So think of "Carpel Tunnel", but not quite. Anywho, going under the Knife on the 21st, should be OK in a month. But I'm going over to the Distaff Side. Where I live, the Law "Frowns Upon" Open Carrying Fixed Blades, so its Folderville. Got tons of Thumbstuds and some Holey Blades, but just one "Assisted Opener", the OSO. And since I've been Right Handed for nearly 60 years, well, Old Habits and all that. So your last Vid gave me a Cheap but Good Blade Option. Thanks Guys!

    I can live with the assist on the cheaper knives. As you said, some cheaper models don't open so smooth, and the average user on the street, who only opens an occasional package from Amazon, and maybe cuts up an apple for lunch, doesn't know any better. It gives them that wow factor, and lets face it, the average guy makes up the bulk of the budget market. It's kind of nice the way it rockets open, the herky jerky close...not so much, lol.

      Close isnt exactly herky jerky... not very smooth or light detent mind you. Its a pretty heavy detent you have to push all of the way closed with a finger, you cant just drop shut it. Thats because of the speed safe, it needs to be that springy to be able to deploy in desperate emergency situations. The detent would be amazingly perfect without it but it needs it for safety

    I've got no problems with 420hc. I figure if I'm going to pay less for a knife than a sharpmaker, they're going to be seeing eachother pretty often no matter what.
    Gonna have to disagree with you guys on the speedsafe though. I've always been of the opinion that there's no need to add more moving parts that could potentially fail for functionality that you don't need. A couple of my favorite kershaws include the Zing and the Skyline (Sorry Bird!), two lightweight, manual knives with amazing action on washers. Kai can make a low cost knife with good manual action if they want to, but they take the easy route with speedsafe instead. CRKT has a ton of, in my opinion, super well designed knives with superb manual action, for not much more, if any additional cost.
    It'd be one thing if Kershaw was doing all of this in America and putting out competitively priced knives, but the Link is an exception. A very well done one, mind, but an exception none the less.
    That being said I still do like some of their speedsafe designs; I'm not going to be rioting in the streets to get torsion bars banned from America any time soon. One of my favorite carry knives (that I really wish they would start producing again) is the Needs Work. It's a fantastic edc and I've used it for years with no problems; I just would have rather payed ten dollars more for a manual version! Cheers guys!

    • @BirdShotIV
      @BirdShotIV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol rioting in the streets. In all our speedsafe knives and thousands and thousands of flips, never a failure. Taking them apart, its so simple I just don't see failure being easy. Our experience anyway, thanks for the feedback!

    FYI about 420: did you know that the US Military M9 Bayonet is made from 420? Don't know about the HC part, but they only treat it to about 53 Rockwell. And since it supposed to be made with only "American Material", and there's about 400,000+ made since 1986, I think the Kershaw Rep was telling the Truth about it being made with "American Steel." Now Chris Tanner says the Chinese have huge forests of 8cr13mov trees that they harvest for their Knife Production, but I'm not so sure... anyway, I don't have a problem with SpeedSafe. It works as it was designed to: Open a Folder FAST w/o breaking some Idiotic Anti-Knife Laws. Which for Soon-to-be One Handed Persons like me due to upcoming Surgery, is a comfort when I hit the Streets. Might just order the Basic Link this weekend, 'cause my OSO is a little small in my size 2XL Hands with Gloves on. Anyway, there's my two cents. Night all.
