    I have watched a lot of videos about the pop up and also home preperation and this is the first time someone makes a point about the legs swinging up as well as the arms pushing the board down in a "piston" motion. As someone how had problems with the pop up being not a fluent motion and too slow this now seems super obvious and right, but no other video really talked about it like this. Will test this for my next vacation, video seems to be one of the best out there, thanks!

    Fantastic work mate - surfed most of my early years in South Africa - age 10 to 20 and then moved to the uk.
    Just taken up surfing again at 46 and loving it but I realised my pop up wasn’t right (inconsistent and I kept smacking my leading foot into the deck)
    after watching your tutorial I got out our old soft board - drew on all the suggested lines on it and started practicing- I realised STRAIGHT AWAY what the problem is ! I’m not rotating my hips when I jump up so my front foot is smacking into the deck.
    I’m also not “popping up” I’ve been pushing up off my back foot and then swinging my front foot through
    Thanks mate this instructional video is fantastic and when we are next in Lanzarote I’ll book an intermediate lesson with you

      @@SurfInsight Thanks, I’ll look out for Rob. I did a one on one lesson down at Sennen a couple of years ago and was standing regularly using the Australian knees first technique. It’s consistent for getting up right but think if Im going to advance onto more green waves need to be getting up quicker ? Once again, many thanks.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garysmith2983 totally ..the techniques like that can slow down take off speed so much they will limit the types of waves you can ride .... I do use them for those with very poor agility or strength to weight ratio ...all of which can be altered with specific training ..and if somebody has too much weight I advise ..get stronger ..its easier than losing weight !

    I owe you an apology Tim! I watched this long ago but thought "who needs a mirror" when practicing. In practice my popups worked great but in the water it was like I didn't practice at all. I've struggled for a long time with looking down too. Recently I started using a mirror (but in front) and suddenly my popups in the water are starting to match the practice. Better late than never I guess. Thank you again for these great tips!

    I,m 47 and my pop up isn't quick but I,m always on my feet in position and I learned to keep knees bent and springy and my back straight looking up to where I m going.
    Most important is to keep low until your definitely down the line.
    A few more seconds in your pop up so it's not rushed is the key.

    best pop up, flick jump video on the web so far! I have one issue tho I ve never found any answer for it! i ve been surfing for years and i have quite a good lever BUT i ve learned by myself and my muscle memory for the pop up is wrong, I am regular and my front foot goes outside the left rail then I must remove my left hand to let my foot get in the right position on the center line (with always a slight ajustment) and this doesn't allow me to surf hollow waves cause i am wasting precious seconds and precision while standing up! my self confidence is more and more decreasing when i see all my friends catching hollow waves while i am stucked there staying in my confort zone doing wrong pop up! i think the problem comes from the hip not twisting ... i am not sure :/ thanks for your help and keep posting useful videos please!!!

      Hi ..sorry for the delay in getting back as this went to a TH-cam spam folder. The best thing to suggest is to create space by pushing hard with the both hands flat, not holding and to make sure there is good hip rotation while your vision is up. Often misalignment of the front foot is due to lack of space and lack of that rotation and the place to nail this is in practise at home. Hope that helps and we hope you get to join us sometime at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ or www.surfschoolanzarote.com

    Thanks for such a great lesson. The popup is the MOST essential move in surfing - the other being paddling. Nothing happens till your on your feet. The slomo was a good effort at showing something that is hard to get. People spend years dragging their knees and feet and thus falling or pearling. By then, its a habit and hard to break. They lose out on waves and get frustrated.
    The other point you make is that its a swivel, a pivot, etc not a static jump -- thats what almost all schools teach. The pivot popup sets you up for the face lean or bottom turn by giving you that cubic cm of chance to Think ahead of the break vs just reacting.
    Other things that could be discussed in another video is strength and flexibility. Which may seem obvs but is not. Specially if you're weak and or fat and or older. Performing the popup requires both .
    If you're losing your stoke or not getting stoked to begin with, get fitter and flexier . It will make all the difference.

    Hi Tim. Thanks for the great video. The slowmo was particularly helpful. After the flick I find i am using my toes to press off the board before going into the jump. It appears to me from the video that my feet should not touch the board until planted in the right spots. Can you please tell me if this is right? If I can't land right, is the modification of using my toes ok in the beginning? Thanks so much.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you have a larger board and can have contact with your feet of course you can use the " hands toes jump " technique but of course we need to land in the right spot...but try to work on that flick jump to help and it will come ..just practise and coordination with of course a bit of upper body strength..but take your time ...it will come. We really hope we see you at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ and www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ one day.

    Looks so useful I'm going to do it. 57YO spending 9 mo/year away from the ocean :( Just one quick question: when you positioned the mirror for her you made her look down the line the whole time she was paddling. Don't you want to eye the curling side? Or is it because you expect us to take off behind the peak every time? :)

    Interesting point on not extending the arms halfway, just exploding out fully. A lot of videos I've seen suggest partially extending and holding first to stabilise yourself, even if just a split second, before following through. Perhaps that's more for total beginners? Or is that something not recommend at any level?

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MC and thanks for that. There are a times when an experienced surfer having already caught the wave will stay with extended arms looking for the right moment to pop up but in most cases especially late take off its an explosive movement . Don't be fooled by the slow mo but check this out th-cam.com/video/XYZ46bGfZ08/w-d-xo.html The feet are normally making contact as the hands just leave the board . Its really a matter of split seconds that the arms are in extension.

    Firt of allá thanks forma the tutorial the BEST Everest!! Question: I have a 9,2 Longboard and my doubt is, where do I put my front foot, in the midle of the lenght of the board? Thanks un advance!

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi .. thanks for that.. with a longboard we are moving up and down the board very often .. it maybe to speed the board up or its a style / manoeuvre thing by going to the nose. But if you have your front foot about middle of board and the back foot toward the tail area then your in the right spot . Having your back foot in the tail is vital for good turns on a longboard and just keep the stance wide for big turns like cut backs but then we vary the foot width and position according to what you want to do on the wave. We hope we get to coach you one day at one of our schools www.surfschoolanzarote.com or www.surfschoolsrilanka.com but do ask any coaching questions you may have of course.

      @@SurfInsightI seem unable still to jump up from my knees after a lot of land practice (which is super frustrating). So I tend to do a walk up which is then far too slow and results too often into being stuck in front of the white wash (or being scared of nose diving and body boarding waves instead). I've heard mixed things about jumping from the toes as I heard it's then restricting board size but then I'm also absolutely not able to jump from the knees, I just don't get what's needed to get there. Do you recommend to train to do the jump from the toes as a transition to eventually then jump from the knees? Or will it imprint muscle memory that I can't detach from and be stuck with 7' boards and above? (Anything smaller means my toes are off the board). I feel really stuck in my pop up and would really love any insight to eventually be able to jump up which is my goal for 24!

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Charlie. Doing that to the board probably means that in the moment of flicking you legs up your banging the knees into deck. There is a slight pressure coming off the hips but no downwards movement into the deck . Its about flicking up ward with the lower legs that takes pressure of the knees. This and pushing hard with the arms at the same time as the flick to create distance in the air for you body to come through. If you want send me a WeTransfer vid to info@surfschoolsrilanka.com of you practising on land and we can see where the issues are coming from.. dont want you messing up your board

    So?
    Paddling with head/shoulders up?
    Just before pop up, head goes down? ( feet up as well)
    Then, head/ shoulders go back up as hands go under ribs?
    Then, flick off knees/thighs into position?
    Right?

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that .. head is always checking across the wave and the head should not go down but for some waves the chest can push into the board if needed to help with entry. Let the drive of the arms do the work with flat hands and then dont think about the legs too much but just let them do a natural flick upwards as you say. Hi,
    I noticed that when you did the pop up in slow motion that you lifted your right knee slightly earlier than your left. Your right foot was on the back of the board and it also seemed to land on the board slightly before the left/front foot landed. Is that something that should always happen (back foot lands slightly before front foot)?
    After I watched this video the first time I tried to pop up using both knees at the same time and I struggled to get any pop and hip rotation. When I flicked the leg of my back foot slightly before I flicked the leg of my front foot it seemed to help me generate more pop and hip rotation. This is only my first day of trying this, but I wanted to make sure that I am not creating any bad habits as I'm trying to make the transition to a shortboard.

    What’s your take on the chicken wing pop up? I am having a hard time jumping pop up on my 7.2 poacher

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there...if it has to be used due to a lack of strength but more importantly timing in the body then OK ..it could be used but taking that amount of time to come to your feet will limit your ability to take on steeper and faster waves . It would seem that you were using your toes to engage with the tail possibly when you jumped up before but the Flick Jump will allow you to comer up effectively on any length board ...Check this video and tell us how your practice goes please th-cam.com/video/5bP9DmgHLKw/w-d-xo.html Please check out the description below to find out more about what we do.

    I could never get the pop up. 30 years of surfing. I always had to get my right leg in front of me (goofy) very deliberately, and then push up with my right leg to bring my back leg up. In two distinct stages. Kind of like an old man with arthritis struggling to get to his feet. So I missed a lot of waves, fell on a lot of waves... My right leg just didn't fit it seemed, between my belly and the board while my hands were still pushing up. I eventually evolved to spread my right knee way out so it wouldn't be against my belly. So my right foot would be laying on its side and I'd have to roll it over as I stood up. It's a wonder I even caught a single wave.

      @SurfInsight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Zen...Firstly well done for persevering with a technique that did get you to your feet .....but yes, its a slow one and we have seen it many times before . Often it can be the at hips just don't want to assist in movement and if you do ( and I'm not saying you do ! ) have a belly that hung down it just doesn't allow space for the leg to come through . I wonder if you tried this hands toes jump technique you see on our videos th-cam.com/video/ZJWYpNS_s_A/w-d-xo.html keeping tension in the legs and really driving with the arms . It's technique always but weight to strength ratio is vital .. to get that drive through the arms Zen... but up and riding is the main thing however we get there. Please check out the description below to find out more about what we do.

      yes it is so do send me your video on WeTransfer to info@surfschoolsrilanka.com and we can take a look at it an see whats happening . If you keep your hands on the deck for too long or at worst hold the rails then for sure there in no room for the feet to pass through . I think the legs flicking is great, but the arms should lock or hold a bit longer while the legs are being tucked under. then you get people scraping their knees on the board or people popping up with one leg at a time.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ah not found that really in my 35 years of coaching Connor from beginner to WQS folks It totally depends on the wave whether you hold on the arms for a while ready to explode or explode and extend immediately . As in fast jacking waves where our take off, say in slabs, is often under the lip. A bit too much info for a 4 1/2 min video or even 20 -3o mins . You see most people who are top surfers never really watch these videos . They grow up in a world of absorption of knowledge and movement that is subliminally copied from their peers around then. A ripping 12 year , surfing since 8 old has no need to be taught to pop up or the timing or which wave . Maybe a little when super young but they absorb . So in video shorts like this we consider the older learning surfer who must learn and often unlearn in a pedantic form of whole / part / whole learning and too much info in even 20 min video will take away from the core skills.. I believe that anyway but being a coach in other sports too this is a key understanding when working with people who come late in age to a sport.

    • @boltup5566
      @boltup5566 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree to disagree.
      Older learning surfers are not athletic enough to flick their legs under neath them during the pop up.
      I don't see anything wrong with learning to hold/lock arms for half a second, while the legs fold underneath them. It's a comment so viewers can try both flicking and holding their arms.

      Hi ..sorry for not getting back to you sooner ..I hope your doing stretches before and after your pop up practice ? If the problem persists ask physio if you can as its such a large body movement and any pulls like that should be avoided ..hope it doesn't happen to you in the water . Hi .. try a jump practise where make a mark past where the nose would be by about 5-6 inches . Imagine that you want to jump and twist the hip towards that point .. you dont want twist the hip that but it give you an idea how much the hip should twist .. if thats not clear ( as it sounds complex but isnt ) do tell us. • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Kristian.. Do you mean that both feet are pointing to the nose or both feet pointing to the rail of the board. ? In both cases it can be about hip rotation not being enough .. but also about looking down during the jump. Can you send me some simple video of yourself to me on We-transfer on Monday 28th .. not lots of vid just one or it will be hard to down load .. and are you using the lines drawn on the floor or on a board ? Also try this .. of you have the lines then imagine trying to twist the leading hip and shoulder past the nose point of the line or board .. this really helps to.. and not thinking it out too much really helps as well .. hope to hear from you soon

  • @oleksiifedosov579
    @oleksiifedosov579 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, thank for video a lot. I just started learning surfing and I have a question. Isn't such popup technique dangerous for the knees if to train it on the floor?

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you are banging the knees during the practise then for sure its no good for you. When done the right way there should be no impact from the knees but a yoga may or doing it just on carpet can help of course

  • @charliebryce3783
    @charliebryce3783 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Buy a cheap yoga mat and Mark out the positions with a straight edge and a marker. You can then roll it away when not being used

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that and thats a nice idea but having a soft board with markers on it gives a more realistic practise method we feel..especially for hand position ... But any practise is good for sure ..watch the matt never slips too.
