Absolutely incredible and historical performance…
A sublime performance by Yo-Yo Ma. But what helps to make this performance one of the greatest ever is the playing of Patricia Zander. I have never heard of her before but this is a phenomenal interpretation and performance of the piano part. I am sure Cesar Franck will smile in heaven every time this is played on TH-cam
Indeed, Patricia Zander is what makes this Tokyo concert special. Funnily, she knew these pieces front and back thanks to playing with her husband, conductor Benjamin Zander (a cellist who studied with Cassado). Likely Yo-yo's interpretation is very closely aligned with that of the husband and wife duo.
So many different interpretations by so many brilliant musicians... this is just beautiful and moves me to tears.
It's really great to see this performance. Patricia Zander was my chamber music coach in Boston. Two great musicians.

This Sonata was arranged as a Concerto. But I think Mr Ma has to play this Sonata w/ an Orchestra Accompaniment so that it can be played as a Violin Concerto that's been arranged for the Cello, because my Idea was to arrange Violin Concertos for the Cello.

A music of high intelligence. Thin, because he realizes all too much easy almost without intensity, yet deep, because he understands in a moment the whole as a total coherence. Please don't play this difficult work so much easy!

There are only two authentic musical genii in the Fareast and both are cellists; Yo-Yoma and Hanna Chang but never in Japan which is the best country there. What does it mean? Perhaps Japanese is unfortunately the most non-musical people in the world.

That's not for you to decide.
"Everything too fast" - I can hardly believe my eyes. The performers take this piece at leaiurely pace. No hurry whatever. The last movement is supposed to be more lively but there is no rushing whatever.

Well Mr Ma can play the Franck Violin Sonata on the Cello by memory.
