    Lyndon Johnson would also start screaming about brake failure while driving guests around his ranch, and go careening into the lake, at which point his terrified guests would realize the car was amphibious.

    "How the South Preserved the Union" is my favorite one. That along with "Fireside Chat" and "Kingfish."
    Also, in regards to that recording of Emperor Hirohito being almost intercepted, that was actually portrayed in the 2012 film, "Emperor."
    Lastly, are you guys ever going to talk about Joe Steele? I got done with it the other day and it was ridiculous but amazing at the same time!

      I need to see Emperor. I almost saw it with my grandpa when it was in theaters. And for Joe Steele, for over a year I've been trying to convince Matt to read it so we can do an episode. One day....

    19:08 For those of you wondering that is the "After the End" mod for CK2. A post-apocalypse mod where society had to restart and the Americas north of the Amazon have advanced to feudal Europe levels of technology.
    There are many references in it like mercenaries named after sport teams and a religion called consumerism that worships the all-mighty Dollar in the temples they call Malls.

    to be precise about Garfield's medical care, his doctor was an old friend from the Civil War, who brought his Battlefield surgical tactics with him (probing, no sanitation, etc) He was also fiercely protective of his position, refusing to allow any other doctors to examine Garfield and even refusing to allow Bell to examine anywhere but where he insisted the bullet must be...which it turns out was on the opposite side of Garfield's body from where it actually ended up, hence why it wasn't found.
    as for Panthers with 88mm guns, there was a planned upgrade to the Panther to allow them to mount 88's, but it never came to fruition beyond a few prototypes.

    I just discovered your channel. Thanks for talking about one of my favorite guilty pleasure books. But you left out the best part of “How the South Preserved the Union.” The narrator was an old aide of President Atchison who was telling this story from 20+ years in the future. And he was telling it because he ran across some silly alternative history story about the North winning the Civil War. At one point, he scoffs at the idea that Lincoln could ever have been President, calling him something like backwater, hillbilly from Illinois.
    Really enjoyed the video. Thanks!

    I live in the Canadian maritimes, and that map of Canada you used has some funky provincial borders. It reminds me of how in hearts of iron 4 Prince Edward Island is part of Nova Scotia. Another thing is that the après moi le déluge total overhaul mod for hoi4 makes the top left corner of New Brunswick part of the gaspe state instead. If you click on the province you can see the old outline of the border and where it should be. Speaking of which, you guys should do an episode on Après moi le déluge.

    So I discovered that if wendell willkie had won the 1940 election, both he and his VP would have died before October of 1944. And at that time the president succession would have gone to Willkies secretary of State, and that's impossible to determine who that would have been unless he declared who he had wanted for that job at some point. So yea from October 1944 to Jan 1945 in the middle of ww2 the president would have been the secretary of state. If I use FDR secretary of state that Cordell Hull but guess what he steps down in Nov 1944 so another secretary of state comes in to be president? Or would it go to secretary of defense then? It gets really tricky and I tried to find an article or something that went over this scenario but I couldn't find one. Needless to say, thats why the presidential succession act of 1947 was made but still, what a crisis that would have been.

    The "handsomest president" had his campaign biography written by the country's best-selling author at the time, Nathaniel Hawthorne, which probably helped. Hawthorne was his college roommate, and as a reward got a well-paying gig as the American Consul in Liverpool during Pierce's presidency.

    Have you guys ever read "Grey Tide in the East" by Andrew Heller. That series is really great, if a little short, as an alternate World War 1 story.

    • @mrScififan2
      @mrScififan2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks interesting; gonna give it a try, I love stories about an alternate WW one.
      But it also disappointed from the title “GREY tide in the East”, I thought it might have been a modern-day confederacy story. Instead the yanks coming “over there”
      It would have been: “over there! Send the word, send the word over there! that the Rebs are coming! The Rebs are coming!

    • @CriticalBrony
      @CriticalBrony 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrS I think it might be one of my favorite alternate history stories. I've always preferred hyper-realistic alternate history to the more whimsical, and Andrew Heller goes above and beyond to provide a realistic scenario. In many ways to his detriment I think, as there are many potential avenues for narrative in Heller's work that he avoids in order to maintain realism. Heller hates to guess about any particular event, always looking for the most reasonable answer (often providing his sources as well).

    With Harding vs. Cox, two Ohio small town publishers run against each other for the Presidency. Originally, Harding was supposed to be Teddy Roosevelt's running mate in 1920, but TR died in 1919 so Harding inherited the top job. There's an alt-history for you: TR runs in 1920, and dies of a heart attack, so Harding inherits the job instead of Coolidge. In real life, Cox after lost the presidential race, he grew his small town newspaper into a family-owned media empire - and today his daughter's company provides cable TV and broadband service around the country as Cox Communications.

    Although I don’t think too much highly of his politics the thing to keep in mind with regard to George W. Bush even though he was at the Texas Air national guard, he was flying interceptors who had one purpose to splash out of the sky Soviet bombers coming over the Arctic. Yes he did not go to Vietnam but he chose what could’ve been and is much more dangerous mission if the SHTF.

    There was an account during the Civil War of the Boston Irish Brigade running into the Atlanta Irish Brigade on the field of battle details obscure but after the battle they tended to each other's wounded and buried each other's dead as the Confederate chaplain was the only surviving Catholic priest in company of any military division at that time

    So, finally realized I hadn't actually watched this video even though I keep hearing references to Dukakis throughout the vids.
    On the XI Corps at Gettysburg:
    While not all of the troops in the XI Corps were german, between a third and half of it was. And most of its top commanders were German or other immigrants. One of them was Alexander Schimmilfenning, who had fought in the 1848 revolutions, went to London and joined the Communist League, where he was part of a faction opposing a weirdo upstart by the name of Karl Marx.
    Yeah...one of the union commanders at Gettysburg...was technically a communist.

    Hey Talkernate History, since you covered Kaiserreich on this show, do you think you could possibly make a video on the upcoming HoI4 mod The New Order: Last Days of Europe?

      I'll look into it. There's so many cool Hoi4 alternate history mods coming out. I love it.

      It isn't exactly the most plausible or realistic of Axis Victory scenarios, but it looks very fascinating from what's been shown in the dev diaries. Here's a link to their thread on the alternate history website: www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/the-new-order-last-days-of-europe-an-axis-victory-cold-war-mod-for-hoiiv.430817/
