Hey there I just got my R8 today and I’ve been watching your video it is very helpful I’ve watched it several times I had a task cam for track and found that really hard to work with I looked at this at Amazon and it looks to me like it might be more user-friendly in for the price point I got it at 200 I decided to buy it as I am 73 years old and bored and I have a guitar and I have some percussion equipment and I’d like to make it useful so I appreciate that you have done what you have done and I plan on going over it 50 more times Garrett
Thanks, much appreciated. I've had the books out for a while now. You can grab the eBook version here www.amazon.com/dp/B01F801N6G or printed version here www.amazon.com/dp/1980233497
I really want to thank for this tutorial. I got this recorder a few months back and I'm still amazed of how great this recorder is. The manual can be so overwhelming at times , bouncing tracks was a barrier breaker for me and you explained it so easily.
These little machines are amazing. For 90% of the world, they just aren’t intuitive. Even the simplest stuff can be frustrating. You need to understand it and practice using the thing. I think that’s why so many were bought, used 10 times and put in the closet. Most of the used ones you find are like brand new. Many thanks for the video and the book!
Exact video. I'm rather late to the party with this little machine but, especially given it's age, I'm very impressed by its capabilities. I expected it to be a digital version of an old eight track tape machine! This thing is better equipped than some recording studios I worked in back in the day! Outstanding bit of kit for the price and your video has taken a lot of the frustrating trial and error out of some of its functionality for me. Nice one dude!
Robert, thank you so much for posting your Zoom R8 videos. On the the strength of your TH-cam material I purchased one and it arrived on Friday Dec 1. First test drive was I put the Squier HSS through the guutar effects and see how usable they are without tweaking the effect edits. They're great for a quick start but do need tweaking to get the desired tone but perfectably usable in certain contexts (I recorded using the bass with chorus and my brother couldn't tell the difference and he's been a music head for over 40 years). Today I recorded a 5 track John Martyn cover. My first end to end session from recording acoustic on the external Mics followed by electric and some keyboard phrases, mostly strings, on top of a backing vocal. Wow! Zoom really have done a good job in packaging this most affordable of units. I was able to navigate my way through record, volume mix and master in a couple of hours without jumping out the window in contempt of the world. There was a period of frustration where I loaded the raw tracks onto Ableton Live but this proved senseless as the last time I used Ableton I put the Midi Controller back in the box to gather dust for a year. This bears out what you say about Zooms user friendliness. It is so much easier. The only improvement I could suggest would be a HDMI output with graphics to a high res monitor so you could stack the tracks one on one to facilitate editing. Otherwise, totally happy so far. I trust Zoom have rewarded you and some of the other instructional uploaders for their sterling efforts. Once again thanks so much for the great info.
I just watched hours of videos that managed to explain and clarify exactly nothing more than the downloadable manual. Your video confirmed within minutes that the R8 in fact can do what i need it to, and thus the H4N will be getting some company soon. Thank you for making a straight forward, idiot proof demonstration of the loop-functions, i was going crazy watching series of other videos on the subject, that went nowhere in several 30-45 mins episodes.. This was exactly what i was looking for!

Thank you very much for this great tutorial. This will save me so much time and let me focus on arranging songs.
Great video, I’ve not been able to use manual because it’s very intimidating, you make it easy to follow you as you instruct how to with the R8, thanks for the very informative post!
Thanks for a very straightforward and informative demonstration ... I'll definitely use this for reference to get started ... I hope You do a series - maybe a complete song/tune from start to finish, cut up into 'bite sized' videos ... Just to make the whole process easier for guys like me to grasp ! Thanks Again, A lot ! :)
Great video. I've had my R8 for over a year and ended up putting it to one side because of the manual! Thanks to yours and another video I've just finished my first track. Now for some more in depth tinkering......
Great video. Should be receiving my R8 tomorrow or the day after. I would definitely buy your book if ever you were to write it. No more PCs or laptops for me. This looks like fun and I will be able to enjoy more time making music than missing with lag time and driver issues
Great video. This little thing has amazing capabilities, but I found the official instruction manual cryptic and intimidating. I've watched a ton of videos on this, and this is the best one. I learned a ton and can't wait to start doing the tricks you showed here. Great job. Thanks for demystifying.
Excellent tutorial! My only problem is I trimmed according to the manual AND your demo but it still doesn't work. Maybe it'll be in the comments already posted. Thanks for the bouncing and sequence info.
Terrific video! Thank you. A tutorial that is definitely 720p+ worthy -- TH-cam only offering me max 360p -- this would be an even better reference for the R8 if I could read the screens and menu items clearly. I would definitely read a book if authored.
Thank you so much I have just brought this and it did confuse me. The first peace of music kit I have brought that has confused me lol But you are a great teacher and explained it very well. thanks alot !!
Excellent...boy did i NEED this...had my R-8 in the closet 4ever...NOT ANYMORE. !! thanks TO YOU. !!....much thanks foer a clear and very helpful demo. !!
I bought the manual and found it to be a way better guide than the Zoom manual, which is good only for reference. After using the Zoom R8 for 4 months now, I bought the Zoom Live track L12 but it doesn't seem to have its own rhythm tracks. For now I am using both- for mixing the choir and for playing my backing tracks recordings at Church. I'd wish you wrote a similar manual for the L12 with recording tips, tricks, and techniques.
hey, just wanted to say you thanks for great video. I watched it carefully before my R8 arrived, and when it did, I instantly knew how to work with it.
WAS confused as shit until,........I watched your tutorial, Bravo! Not only was it easier to understand your "How to," it ultimately saved a Zoom R-8 from being introduced to Mr. Slag Hammer. and even more recently, helping me now come up with the name for my new metal band.... *SLAG-HAMMER * ,\m/ Absolutely, make your version of an ops manual, if it isn't too much trouble. Thanks for the vid my friend! Cheers!
Hi, great video. I'm going to buy it because of this video. I already own an R16 because I need more inputs for guitars, bass and ext drum machine. But it doesn't have the most important thing: the sequencer. So I plan to buy an used R8 and to connect the R16 stereo out to the two R8 input set as line. I know I could sell the R16 as well and buy an R24 that has got everything, but it's so expensive. Anyway, very good job man. I'll buy your book too
Many thanks for your excellent explanation of this unit. I've had mine from new for about 18 months, but me being me I don't like instruction books especially the one supplied - FTMI ! Your video is great because I can SEE and hear, and I'm certain I'm not alone. You are a great teacher because you take time to explain in a KISS way ( Keep It Simple Stupid ! ) My R8 basically sits gathering dust and is a waste, but now your great videos have prompted me to use the thing as should ! ( Maybe you can do one on an old Korg Trinity Plus as well ? Hahaha! ) I did have a problem with the 1/4 jack sockets - they are very tight - so tight in fact, when pulling out a plug it left the centre part inside the R8 ! I made a video for other people who may have had a similar problem - the ONLY way to remove the part is by using a rusty nail and some superglue. I sent the unit to the maker under warranty, only to be told they couldn't remove the pin without me accepting the fact they would PROBABLY damage the socket internally if given the go ahead ! Hence I had them send it back, then my own ingenuity took over - and won ! A well deserved thumbs up and 5 * * * * * for your video from me !
First of all I found this incredibly helpful and I bought the Better Zoom ebook you suggest below... So thanks! I found an interesting variance to your bounce instructions. If I am playing my work with the sequencer mode on (channels 1& 2 are amber) , I found that I have to turn up the level of 3 (the channel I'm bouncing to) to make the bounce work. Whereas when channels 1& 2 were green as is the case in your video, you could bounce with the level 3 down to 0. Thanks again
Thanks for the video,I have just ordered 1, and looking forward to using it, What I am looking forward to is doing a recording as you showed and then connecting other instruments and mic to add to the original piece, great thanks again.
Rich, this video was and is fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to make this. I don't own one of these as of at but I would like too. I'm just trying to figure out if I should buy the R8 or the R16 or the R24. Do they all basically have the same features that your R8 does other than tracks and out/inputs of the machines?? I'd really appreciate any info from you as you know this machine very well. Again, thank you and I'd also would love an easy to understand booklet by you.
Rich...DUDE, thanks so much for that info as that's what I was afraid of as I was leaning possibly more towards the R16. However, now without have the built in drums the unit would be a drag. Like you, I guess I'm just trying to stay away from using a DAW type of thing as I'd be locked down into using a computer which I am trying to avoid. I'm real old school, I used to have myself a nice little setup in the late 70;s and early 80's with my 4 Track 10 1/2" reel to reel Tascam and 2 track Stereo mix down machine along with two 4 track mixing boards and two meter bridges setup. Basically all real analog. However the wife decided it was time to put those away and the years just passed by. And now these little digital things scare the crap out of me with all they can do. But to me it's so hard to understand how they work. So like I said, I really enjoyed watching you use your R8. I recall the one video where you went through all of the built in sounds/effects that this little unit has and that alone blew me away. Then again I am a pedal freak and I just love using effects pedals. I've even got 5 pedal boards and yet like you've also mentioned that I applaud you on is that I haven't recorded anything in years. I have the musical background as I did play for years to make a living but before that I actually did get a BA degree in Music on the guitar as my main instrument. I guess I'd just like to really record some stuff to leave as a legacy for at least my son to listen to before end up taking the big dirt nap. So I really appreciate anything I can learn new when it comes to these recording units without having to spend thousands like I did back when I bought all of my old Tascam recording stuff back around 1978.
***** Well I appreciate what your doing and again thanks for the tip on the R24 as well as needing the Class 10 SD memory card in 8 or 16GB size. Mostly I would be interested in making everything a WAV file and not MP3's but that's just me. Once I get the WAV file onto my computer I'm sure I'd be able to copy a WAV to MP3 if I needed to but I'd just rather burn the WAV files right to a CDR disc for safe keeping also in case of any remixing of any of the tracks should I find that I don't like a certain mix after some solid listening to them. Hope to talk to you again soon Rich. Thanks again for all of your help.
great tutorial... I can now purloin my brother inlaw's R8 and have it back before he ever notices... your probably thinking why not ask?? ... he would insist on showing me how it "functions" and it's benefits and features and frankly lifes too short
This is BY FAR the best tutorial I've seen on the zoom R8!! I have liked and subscribed to your channel good sir! Would you please make more "how to use the R8" tutorials for us the wider community that have recently purchased one and are having trouble getting started?
Thank you for that my friend are you more or less created a few new synapses in my brain I never understood the sequencing and now I have a clearer understanding thanks again
Great tutorial - demystified some of the R8 functions I haven't tried yet because manual sucks. Thanks. I'd be interested in more tutorials or a plain English manual.
Great demo, like your style man. You've made me want one, having rejected several other solutions. I am on the hunt for the ideal on-stage looping / backing machine that is self contained; tempted by iPhone apps etc but as you say, you need a bunch of crap to plug into them and you could end up spending a lot on gear that becomes obsolete next time Apple does an update... One question, how good is this for live looping, drums and rhythm tracks in particular - compared to, say Ableton, which is probably the best way to do this, but involves too much effort / external gear to be enjoyable. Thanks
Hey Rich, do you have a detailed video of how to record your own samples and then program them in a beat? e.g. recording beatbox sounds with your mouth, sampling acoustic drums with either the stereo mics or with a plugged in mic...
Hey man love the way you teach ! Nice and easily broken down . Have you finished your book yet ? I have just bought a second hand r8 but don't have a manual with it. Your book sounds like it would have all the answers. Cheers cai
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! 8 years after this is very useful. Did you manage to publish the book? I have the latest version of Ableton Live Suite and a great external sound card to do all this in a simple and eye-straining method, but somehow using this method makes it a lot more fun!
Rich I had to watch this again. If you can answer fine, if not I'll do more research. I've bounced 2 tracks together on track 1,2, and 3 (bass and guitar) looped them to the place I want the loop to start again. Each track has a different part of the song. Ok, they're looped and lit up in amber. Now I go to track, press the button there, come down to Sequencer, press that button. Press record and touch the pad on 1 through 3 as to how many times I want the loop to repeat. Put them in the order I want, exit, come back and press Track Sequencer so it is on. Now when I play it back it's good for a number of measures and then the tracks are playing over each other at some point. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong - thanks if you have any advice.
This thing is awesome. Just got one and planning to do techno tracks on it. Going to record some synth sounds and sequence them. Seems like a lot of work but I think at some point it’ll be natural. Thanks for explaining the basics of it👍
Update: I looked again at this video tonight, and see you had finished the e-book. I have just bought it, and it's WELL worth the small amount you ask. I would strongly recommend anyone who has an R8, and like me, is put off by the rather formidable instruction manual provided with it, to get Mr Menga's e book. Great value - great instructional !
brill ...would you know if it is possible to record vocal and then take vocal track and edit it in melodyne and then put it back into the r8. thanks im thinking about buying this .
Thanks for making this video. Recently I've been playing with the idea of maybe recording some of my own proggy stuff and had come across this product as a potential buy which is why I watched this video. I'm not a bad singer, better than average on guitar and mediocre at best on bass... Can't play the drums for shit 😂. Let's just say I'll never be a live performer 😂. Ive always had a rudimentary understanding of how music is produced but my mind has just exploded whenever I've even looked at a mixing board. This video has given me the confidence to spend the money as after watching it I'm certain I'll at least be able to record and sequence something.... Of some description. Very clear, consice instructions. This also has the added benefit to f being a control console for your pc mixing software which for the price is brilliant. Thanks again for the vid.
Hey rmenga, this is really cool. I'm thinking to buy one because I really like the track sequencing capabilities. In the video you used one track with it's pad to add it to the sequencing grid, so this means that you can only have one riff per track? or is it possible to sequence different riffs recorded in the single track? can you bounce a sequence to a track? I hope you can understand what I wrote, cheers!
Thank you for this info.. this is such a cool device! Please share More knowledge about this device. Especially about mixing and mastering. Thank you. I’ve been using zoom recorders since the 90’s. Pocket studio.
Nice tutorial. Is it possible export the tracks before bouncing in case you want to master it in a different way later? Also I think I read somewhere that these units can act as an audio interface to a computer which could be useful if you aren’t out of your home studio and can use something like Cubase or even GarageBand to give you more flexibility.
Thanks, this is just what I wanted to see when considering getting an r8. I think I need one now despite all the apps on the iPad. No substitute for hands on control.
Great Video! Can you retrigger loops in the sequencer independent of their length? In other words if a loop is 2 measures long can the sequencer be programmed to play it every 1 measure or less?
HELP PLEASE .Need help with this sequencer thing, had it over a year now and not using it for that reason,. All I want is to play an instrument along with drum beats to record my intrument "in time" and try out other patterns later on with my performance. This is very Basic usage but can't seem to figure out how to do it, had 2 digital recorders before. Yes I did check the manual.Seems only either drum beat pre-programing or instrument recording. All i want is to have a beat playing when i record my instrument. Later to have that beat playing while i add accents and cymbales using the pads while bouncing it on a track ,like i did with my previous recorders. Basic usage, but can't figure out how to do this ,HELP!
Great video . how do you get the mastering done and make the vocals so smooth. I am using a condenser mic for my acoustic in input 1 and another condenser mic in input 2 for my daughters vocal at the same time and the sound is weak during playback . I have an R8 and the instructions are complicated. Not sure how to master , add softness, effect , etc and mix down to get the great sound like I am hearing from everyone on TH-cam. Looking to do a few tracks per recordings. Thanks for any help and I really appreciate it.
im also hoping i dont have to make loops...does it record for 4 minutes?can i just play my music into it and do it the old way of getting it right ..lay down some drums and get organic?

You're the light in to the darkness of the R8 thank you for your videos
just got this today ,able to follow you better than the manual Cheers Man
Hi, great video.
Hahaha! )
I did have a problem with the 1/4 jack sockets - they are very tight - so tight in fact, when pulling out a plug it left the centre part inside the R8 !
Thank you so much. You cured my headache. Best informative video on this migraine making machine.
Thanks for taking the time Maestro
Great video and bought your e book on the strength of it! Thank you for your help in learning this great device
Thanks for the video,I have just ordered 1, and looking forward to using it,
What I am looking forward to is doing a recording as you showed and then connecting other instruments and mic to add to the original piece, great thanks again.
Excellent teacher kind of put this recorder to the back burner but you explain it very well.
This is great. Just bought the unit a few days ago. Love Zoom products, this one is looking to be one of the best.
Thanks again for all of your help.
punch in/out caused clicks on my r8
great tutorial...
Thanks for your clear explanations unlike the book ;)
Great tutorial - demystified some of the R8 functions I haven't tried yet because manual sucks. Thanks. I'd be interested in more tutorials or a plain English manual.
Thank you for so much info. Please do make a book or video series.
Already done. You can get the eBook here www.amazon.com/dp/B01F801N6G or paperback here www.amazon.com/dp/1980233497
It's good I had a boss 1180cd. It was stolen ten years ago .you explained and carried out a go spend
HELLO
I am having hard time to transfer wavs from the computer to my Zoom R8 on independent 8 Tracks
can you show me how if it can't
seventh time watching this clever instructional. Get the book......
Thanks
Many thanks for this, and for the links to your books.
Cheers cai
+cai bosh LOL im in the same situation
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! 8 years after this is very useful. Did you manage to publish the book?
I have the latest version of Ableton Live Suite and a great external sound card to do all this in a simple and eye-straining method, but somehow using this method makes it a lot more fun!
Very informative video, I just ordered your book a few minutes ago.
Thanks so much for this! I get it now! Excellent tutorial!
and love that you leave mistakes in, best way to learn.
This is an amazing little device !!! Thanks for this video, I will check your book.
Great video, purchased one then found this video to understand how to use it. Thank you
Rich I had to watch this again.
Thank you for taking so many of your time to make this video. Awesome!!
This thing is awesome. Just got one and planning to do techno tracks on it. Going to record some synth sounds and sequence them. Seems like a lot of work but I think at some point it’ll be natural. Thanks for explaining the basics of it👍
Great vid, you took more time explaining the process, would love to have a plain english, step by step book as a guide, thank you
Thank you sir! You just made my life so much easier! ❤🤘🏽
"You are now trimming data...that's a commit" awesome!!!
brill ...would you know if it is possible to record vocal and then take vocal track and edit it in melodyne and then put it back into the r8. thanks im thinking about buying this .
Excellent video!
Thank you for this info.. this is such a cool device! Please share More knowledge about this device. Especially about mixing and mastering.
Thank you.
I’ve been using zoom recorders since the 90’s. Pocket studio.
Good work Dude, thanks. much more helpful than the
manual
Nice tutorial. Is it possible export the tracks before bouncing in case you want to master it in a different way later? Also I think I read somewhere that these units can act as an audio interface to a computer which could be useful if you aren’t out of your home studio and can use something like Cubase or even GarageBand to give you more flexibility.
This unit comes with a free copy of Cubase included.
Very good video tutorial I learned a lot from it thanks 👍👍
Thanks, this is just what I wanted to see when considering getting an r8. I think I need one now despite all the apps on the iPad. No substitute for hands on control.
Your Ebook is perfect
Buy his book on how to use the Zoom R8. It will save you hours of time and give you great tips. Well worth the price!
Best tutorial ever btw! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much for your time and effort...helped me immensely. !
Bought the manual I highly recommend it...
thanks for the video, I get it but would like your version of the Manuel as well if possible.
Perfectly explained, thank you....!
Thank you so much for this!!!
Awesome! Can't wait. :)
