    These are the best Zoom R24 tutorials that I've found online, and the only ones that don't require a Degree in electronics to understand. Thank you very much for your time and effort, these have helped me enormously ❤

    I just got a used one of these and started using it right away.
    I then watched your videos.
    At first I thought there was too much talking before getting into the machine but after watching all the way thru the videos I saw where the info was all very useful.
    I have came to refer to your videos as : Zoom R24 for Dummies”.
    You’ve made it very easy to use and understand this machine.
    Thank you

    I feel I am a little behind everyone here as I have only just purchased this machine and everyone seems to have had one for years! I actually purchased it due to watching clips of your video's, so a big thank you from me! Looking forward to watching all of your video's and learning more, far easier than struggling through a manual. Thank you so much for doing these video's :-)

    Thanks so much for this. Bought my bugger 3 years ago 2nd hand and couldn’t get to grips with it (no manual so just effing about) Thought I’d have another go today and having watched these tutorials managed to record my first multitrack since my old zoom PS04 from about 20 years ago. The neighbours won’t thank you but I do. Great tutorials

    Darren , thanks for this video. You are very clear and methodical at explaining the unit and having got my R24 yesterday and being somewhat overwhelmed by all the functions and the lengthy but small instruction manual, your videos are going to be a Godsend. Really kind of you to put these together. Thanks again! Phil.

    I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to walk through the functions of my new recorder. I decided not to even plug it in until I read the manual and watch a whole bunch of videos here on TH-cam about my machine. I am so glad I've done this... now when I do plug it in...I will be able to go straight to recording and not be frustrated by the learning curve. Thanks!!!!!!

    Hi Topdazzle. I just want to thank you for this amazing series of tutorials on the Zoom R24. I have owned an R24 for many years but never had the time to dive into the user guide to figure out how to use it properly. The R24 documentation is not the most user-friendly. It is all about step-by-step procedures, but very few explanations about sound engineering concepts or best practices. Your videos, on the other hand, provide a good mix between theory, best practices, and how to do it on the R24. You undoubtedly saved me many days of time poking around to figure everything out. Great job! Thanks a lot!

    After having watched your videos quite a number of times, I am very impressed at how helpful this video series has been. I have had to watch them multiple times because there is SO much information contained, each time I gain a little better understanding of the process. The supplied manual was a good source of frustration- these videos made it clear as to what, why and how to do various things using the R24. The only thing I would like to see more about, though it is slightly off topic of this series is what the differences and advantages between using the R24 as opposed to a regular mixer sound board for use in live performances. I use the R24 for both recording and live presentations... To me the biggest limitation of the R24 as a mixer is the limitation of adding multiple different effects to various channels and not having multiple separate monitors. I work around this by making each instrument supply it's own effect separately.Overall.... a very excellently helpful series which has been very useful to help me get the most out of this device. Keep up the good work!Have you considered another series on a little more advanced instruction on usage? You seem to know more about what your doing than was presented in the series, perhaps some more information and tips would be helpful as well.

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Ted Miedke Hey Ted and thanks for taking the time to leave me such excellent feedback and thoughts - very much appreciated. I'm glad the vids are of use - it's a great bit of kit although I would agree with you concerning its limitations as a regular sound desk - in fairness that is not what it's designed for but it would do the job OK at a pinch. I must admit that I hadn't considered much by the way of follow-up or more advanced videos to this one as I couldn't really think of much else to add to be honest. I think the best way to progress is to grasp the basics and then use it lots - that's what I did!

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure Joseph - you have a number of options - either connect your R24 directly to your laptop where it shows up as an external drive then drag and drop whatever you want (make sure to install the drivers first) or, far easier, just remove the SD card from the R24 and put it in your laptop - then drag and drop from there. You will need to have done your final mix down on the R24 first to get the finished stereo master file and just remember the name of the project then look for it in the folder structure on the card when on your laptop - this is what I do and it is very straightforward.

    Sincere thank you Topdazzle for doing these videos. I bought the unit recently (June 2019) and I watched your videos while the unit was shipped and before I took delivery. I already had a good idea how to operate it before I took it out of the box. I was easily able to record and master on day thanks to you. My primary application for this device is simple recording, mixing down/mastering of original ideas. I liked the pads and integrated drum machine. I know the R24 isn't the latest and greatest out there since its been out for years but it will do what I want it to do. I have a Sonar PE based DAW that I had so many issues with bugs, patches crashes it began to kill the mood of recording. On the R24 the loops, rhythms and sampler/sequencer will take some time get but hopefully I'll be able to nail that down soon. At first I thought you were being a bit long winded in your videos but I began to like the overviews and general comments. I also dig the English accent from my pals across the pond. The other thing is that you're just a regular guy like most us all with with day job/careers and families. Again, thanks a bunch and I'll be back to watch the loops, sequencer/sampler videos.

    Have had my ZOOM for awhile now and just finally finished setting up my studio. I am so excited to finally get the chance to sit down with it. I was getting very confused with the DAW and computer I have and connecting everything together. I am planning on just using the ZOOM and worry about integrating the computer later. Seems the ZOOM has all I need to record. I am a solo musician-acoustic/electric/vocals but have been a drummer professionally for many years. So having the ability to listen to a song through headphones from my iPod and the drum tracks to the ZOOM, then lay in the guitar, shakers, tambourine, harmonica and multiple vocals... I hope I can find the necessary time to get to lean the ZOOM in a short period of time. Your videos here will really help. Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to out these together for people like me. Joe in Illinois.

      Hey Joe (where you going with that gun in your hand, etc.?) - great to hear from you and thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment. The Zoom is a great device for what it does and personally I find the quality very high - it's great for drums with the 8x Comp EQ effect turned on - enjoy and I'm glad the vids are of use.

    I've found videos 1 and 2 really useful. I'm getting my r24 at the weekend - your videos helped me choose this (over the r16) and have given me a good, early insight into how to get up and running.

  • @bronsonyazzie1065

    Wow. First of all, this a great introduction to how this recorder works. I've been using a Boss BR 1600 for many years and it's taken me to through countless projects and recordings. My son has started a band and I've started the process of recording them...the BR is starting to show signs of wear and tear...and its age of course.
    So I've been shopping for a new recorder since we started his project. I thought about the zoom r16, but after watching this video demo...i think the 24 is the way to go.
    Thanks so much...rock on!

      Just before I submit my order, can you confirm that it is possible to port all recorded tracks into a DAW, such as the supplied Cubase LE, for subsequent editing at individual track level on a PC. I need to be able to simultaneously record up to 8 tracks on the device, but then do all editing on PC. Apologies if you answer this in later videos - I'm still enjoying working through them all.

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes Steve - you end up with 8 (or more) separately recorded tracks (as .WAV files) on the device which you can then transfer directly to your PC for editing - that is what I do sometimes (but I use Reaper instead as my DAW of choice). Don't forget, you can also use the R24 as both an interface and a control surface allowing you to input your instruments directly into your DAW through the R24 and allowing you to use the sliders and transport controls on the R24 to control your DAW with - far more intuitive and handier to use then dragging a mouse around the screen!! Hope this helps.

    Top Marks I am guessing you are or were a Teacher of other subject's as it takes a certain skill & confidence to work ( unscripted Bullet point's ? ) through that long & stay on point while not being boring . You are lucky enough to have a good speaking voice which without gimmicks or ( too strong an accent ) any big cutaway's ( filmed really well on the kitchen Table cloth ? ) Kept me both informed & able to follow every point as you went . I am 67 & although a long time bluesy style guitar player / Singer /Songwriter Have been struggling to learn how to use these more advanced machines .. I got a Daw & sadly found the menu's & my failing eyesight tended to discourage me rather than my old 4 trk Yamaha which I still use as a sub - Mixer & was so easy to use . Keep up the good work & remember just like after a gig most of the audience will have enjoyed the show but not everyone will tell you .. Best wishes for your channel .. I have a long way to go B4 I have anything worth putting out to the public but I still have fun learning & playing .. Stay safe & keep positive. cheer from an old Muso who has to read the manuals with a magnifying glass lol ..

      Thanks Ben - I really appreciate your kind comments and for taking the time to leave some feedback. I’ve never been a teacher but I’ve delivered lots of training to others over the years. I haven’t done any follow-up videos to these and it’s been years but I recently got a Zoom L-12 Livetrack so was toying with the idea of doing a comparison video between the two and posing the question “is the R24 still relevant in 2022?” as there has been nothing new from Zoom to replace it. Spoiler alert - the answer is “yes”! Your comments have given me the motivation to make this happen so keep an eye on the channel over the next few weeks. Thanks again and enjoy your music!

    This is the first installment in a great series of tutorials on the Zoom R24. Thank you very much, topdazzle!
    I'm still somewhere in video 4b, preparing for using my own R24 - which I received today.
    My first notes to other novices:
    - The current firmware version is 1.13. Download that onto an SD-card (or a microSD-card in an adapter), then use the prescribed way of updating the R24. You could (like me) then leave that card inserted, then format it for storage.
    - The R24 seems not to run without an SD-card. (I tried playing a Rhythm.) So make sure that you have one at hand.
    - I did not find such card included, unlike topdazzle mentioned. (Things may have changed since.) ;-)
    - I'll eventually try to use cards with more storage. However, I'm aware of the likely change of file system involved and of the likely inability of the R24 to handle that.
    - There is an entry in the Tool menu to eject the SD-card. Be sure to use that, to prevent loss or corruption of your data.

    I just sold my Zoom MRS 1608CD as I now use PC. I think it's excellent bit of kit, got me straight into digital from analogue Multi-Track recording on my Tascam 4 Track. The 1608 (now discontinued, so ebay I guess) had a built in Drum and Bass machine, eight combi Hi-Z/XLR inputs (4 with 48v phantom power), MIDI 5 pin DIN sockets and twin RCA/Phono inputs and multiple guitar/vocal effects as well as a good number of on the fly effects including time synced (to the BPM you have set, you can choose which measure to sync to) Delay . The drum machine was good too with lots of kits and step input, as well as using the built in pads or a MIDI device.
    I would recommend Zoom to anyone looking into starting (as well as experienced) recording music as the price is hard to beat for the quality and functions. It's also more convenient than hauling a PC, monitor, sound interface and such, to a gig (unless you have a decent lap top that is) and it's ready to go out of the box.
    I've not used the R24, so I can't comment on that but from my experience with the 1608 I should think it's good for what it is.

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a great piece of kit and thanks for the info!

    • @Sci-Fi-Hooligan
      @Sci-Fi-Hooligan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Zoom's success is down to their marketing model aiming towards lower budgets without scrimping on quality. (nowadays you see the BBC and other professionals using their field recorders).
      As far as I can tell, the more expensive standalone SIAB's (Stusdo In A Box), like Tascam, Fostek, Yamaha e.t.c. at the time I had my 1608, had more buttons and knobs, whereas with Zoom you would have to open a menu on an LCD for some of the functions (probably not an issue with the R24, when linked to a PC's DAW). This may be less convenient but build costs were reduced dramatically for the same functionality, so for those on tighter budgets, the same end results were achievable.
      The only reason I moved to PC was for on screen editing, but that was at the price of reduced portability, as well as Windows mess ups and driver failures, memory leaks; you know the list.
      Cheers! I enjoyed your video.

    Had one of these and sold it when I was a skint student. Really want another one! I have a computer, mixing desk, DAWs etc, but I just want to be able to plug my instruments and mics into a recorder and fire away without the faffing on, and enjoy the recording process.
    Can't afford one right now, but hopefully I'll get one in the not too distant future, second hand if needs be, but preferably new.

      It's great Siobhan but since I made this video there are lots of other options (some of them cheaper) for what you want to do - take a look at some of the Zoom "H" series such as the H4n or the H6 (which I also have and which is great for what you want to do).

    Hi, thanks for all these great videos. Although my Zoom R24 hasn't been delivered yet, I feel that I'll be able to get going with it straight out of the box.
    One thing that you haven't covered is the need to make yourself a 'studio log sheet'. I think that it's something worth thinking about, otherwise things may get confusing...especially if one is of 'a certain age' ! Ha ha.

    Thanks Top dazzle. I have an MRS1266 which has served me well since 2003 but sadly is starting to age due to excessive use. The R24 looks like a good move and this first tutorial has not done anything to put me off the upgrade. Will watch the others before purchase. I assume the transition should be easy as I know my current machine really well.

      @maintconsul1844 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      topdazzle Hi, I used my MRS1266 for 10 years with great success and good quality voices and instruments. It was easy to use and didn't take long to get used to. Select a drum pattern, set it to 120 measures, record a song, used STD Voice, and when recording the master track I could use the drum pads for additional drumming.
      Now with the R24 I took nearly 1.5 years to go back through your videos a second time. I had been very reluctant buying the R24, as it seemed much harder to set up a drum track. There is no STD voice and I am not happy with the MIC algorithms for my condenser mic. I also can't do manual drumming while recording the master. In short, this R24 is a major set-back from a user friendliness point of view. Hard to understand why Zoom would want that. As a result I found that I started looking at your videos in Sept 2013 and did some twelve songs on it, but haven't used it for about 8 months. I now forced myself to try again...So, thanks for those videos. I am now working through the manual as well. There are many things still unclear, for example, when you allocate drum patterns to Tracks 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, then bounce them to 7/8, you then can't delete tracks 1 to 6. So,I found you have to do this in a separate project, then name T7/8 DRUML.wav and DRUMR.wav, then start your new project and copy those two files in. Then you can delete the first project, so you don't loose tracks 1 to 6, which are the ones for guitar, keyboards and mics. Cumbersome indeed. I also bought a dynamic mic, but can you use a dynamic and a condenser mic together in a DUAL MIC insert effect?? It seems a matter of trying but something could damage, for example the dynamic mic that gets 48V!!
      I wonder whether anybody found a nice mic algorithm.
      After all this frustration and disappointment with the results, I haven't even seriously started looking at connecting to a computer and using Steinberg's software.
      Thanks and regards

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No probs man - and glad it's of use. A Dynamic and Condenser mic together will give you no trouble at all as long as you are using a balanced connection on the Dynamic mic. As for the drum stuff - I never use it really (probably for the reasons you have mentioned - it's far too much like hard work!!)

Will mainly use it as a live line-mixer, freeform recorder and mostly as DAW Audio IO (with my laptop). Not sure I'll 'produce' completed, final tracks on it, but at least I could. Hi. Me again. Yeah it was the mapping in Logic. So used to live desks where you choose mic or line, turn up the gain and fader and away you go. The thing that confused me was that input one is already mapped to track one,but you have to map the other tracks yourself. DOH !! btw The channel faders on the R24 are bypassed when used as an audio interface,so you only need to turn up the channel gain to send to DAW. Also you can set Logic transport to be controlled by R24 keys F1- F5.so you don't have to muck about with the mouse so much when you're recording. Thanks again for the tip. Cheers.

    Nice overview. I've been thinking of getting a digital multitrack recorder that allows you to record more than 2 tracks at a time (I currently own a digital 4 track that only allows recording of 2 tracks at a time). I've looked into the Zoom R24 and R16 as well as the Boss BR-800 (which allows recording of 4 tracks at a time) and Tascam DP24SD (which seems to allow simultaneous recording of 24 tracks at one time). Just started to check all these models out and your video has really helped a lot. Looking forward to watching the others in this series.

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problems and thanks for the comment - the R24 allows for simultaneous recording of 8 tracks at a time but playback and adjustment / mix down of 24 tracks simultaneously.

    • @buddhamus
      @buddhamus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was watching some other TH-cam vids on some of the models I mentioned and so far the Zoom R24 seems to be the best bet so far.
      The Zoom R16 is only 16 tracks, but seems to have some of the same features of the 24 and is about $100 (US) less. It might come down to these two.

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - I think the primary difference between the two is that the R16 has 16 rather than 24 tracks and the screen is much smaller - the R24 shows more information at one time on its screen. Other than that, there is very little to choose between them.

      Hey Josh and thanks for your comment - I love my R24 but I don't tend to use the drums much and it's probably the bit I'm the least familiar with to be honest - handy to have if that's your thing but I'm lucky enough to have a "real" drummer (although he's a bit more difficult to program!). All the best and enjoy the videos.

    Alton - thanks for the kind comment, the R24 is perfect for what you want to do. If I wanted to just use this for recording and not mixing, can I import files to my DAW and mix in my computer?

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rich Bischoff You certainly can Rich, yes (and that's exactly how I use it sometimes. You even have a choice of how to do this - you can either record it all to the memory card (as separate .WAV files for each track) then drag and drop them into your DAW or capture them directly into the DAW using the Zoom R24 as an interface and controller - the nice part of doing it this way is that you can map the R24 controls (faders and transport section) directly to those in your DAW using standard Mackie architecture which means whenever you slide a physical fader on the R24, the corresponding fader on your screen will also move - better than using a mouse!

    Picked up a used R24 to record Living room circle jams, Bluegrass, Red Dirt. Nothings amped. Wanted the multiple mic inputs to be able to set up about 6 externals pointed out from the middle of the circle so later can mix the various instruments and vocals. In the ring of the circle there is Bass, mandolin, banjo, Guitars, Vocal, lap slide. Thinking 6 condenser mics point from the center out directionally toward the various instruments will do it. Might even be able to use internal mics 7 & 8. Found match pair Behringer C2s condensers at Sweetwater haven't bought yet. Or what other recommendations? Thanks in advance

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Sounds great Glenn (I love Bluegrass!) but I think you'll find your options for multi-track mix down later on may be a bit limited due to bleed-through from the other instruments / mics - this will be a lot more than you may think. Unless you are going to connect each instrument to its own track then I think you would be far better just doing a stereo recording of the whole session with a pair of mics (or one stereo mic). Of course - there's nothing to lose by trying it your way and seeing what happens!

    • @zmanpluto
      @zmanpluto 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why I think Mic choice is important. I expect bleed through but thinking certain mics would be better than others. Experimenting with shure 57 and SM58 this morning but their pick up pattern seems to require fairly close proximity although with the gain way up actually do ok. What do u think of those C2 condensors?

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never tried them but the condensers are a lot more sensitive than the dynamics - you can't go wrong with an SM57!!

    • @topdazzle
      @topdazzle  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bobby and thanks for the comments and question. There are no routing capabilities on the R24 - in other words, what gets put into input 1 has to go to either Track 1, 9 or 17. If you then wanted to move it to Track 2, you could do this in one of two ways, either by re-assigning the take in the Track menu to Track 2 instead of Track 1 or, far simpler, just use the swap function which is quick and easy to do - this is explained in full in one of my other videos in this series.
