The blimp actually wasn’t a blimp but more of a zeppelin with steel [edit: aluminum] construction inside as a skeleton to keep the hull in shape. A blimp is more kind of a ballon who keeps his shape by the pressure of the gas inside. And the zeppelin that should have been built in this hangar was very large and was designed to carry large cargo weighing up to 160 metric tons. It was therefore called Cargo Lifter.
I was about to write something similar. The CL160 was planned as a semi-rigid airship. Without such an extensive interior framework as, for example, a Zeppelin - but definitely not a blimp.
Yes, this thing is huge. For the Americans to compare. Your largest aircraft carrier, the "USS Ford", fits in completely. But then you can still place a Tico-class cruiser to the left and right. Oh, I would like to go there, but now I read that and I can imagine that it might be loud. Maybe in future they will find a way to cancel the noise. The surface of the building might be to smooth. Usually in big rooms there are hanging barriers from the ceiling, that the energy of the sound is reduced and there is no echo. Or there might be the possibility to create "anti-sound". Would be nice if it was quiet there with some "natural" noises.
Been there once a few years ago. It is really really huge! The huge hall was originally built for cargo zeppelins but the company went bankrupt. So they were looking for something to do with that enormous building and I think they made the absolute best of it. It's located about half way between Dresden and Berlin, if you wanna come over and check it out.
I've been there once and I can't stress enough how surreal it feels, especially with the constant temperature during night time. Also it starts to 'rain' in the night when humidity condensates on the cold ceiling and drops down.
That hangar was built in 2000 by Cargolifter AG. The Cargolifter project was started in the mid 1990s by the VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau / German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association) with the intention to build an airship able to transport heavy and bulky plant components like large turbines for hydro power plants in remote regions, large car body presses and so on. The company failed in the end, partly due to project management mistakes (they started with developing the most difficult part, the air crane which should enable the airship to pick up and lower down its cargo without landing - the difficulties they experienced with that ate most of their 300 Mio. Euro assets, while they had still no products in the line which could earn a bit of revenue in the near future, and after the dotcom bubble bursted they couldn't get no fresh money anymore). The hangar was planned to house several Cargolifter CL160 Airships (260m length, 65m diameter); it is therefore 360m long, 210m wide and 107m high. It was sold in 2003 to the Malaysian Tanjong trust.
The biggest problem with this attraction is that the investors didn't bother to insulate the dome at all, so it continuously consumes megawatts of heating power (this is not an exaggeration).
The hangar is so high that it does not need fake clouds. They are for real, as the difference in air pressure and thus temperature is high enough between ground and ceiling for natural clouds to form.
funfact: Tropical Island has its own operating fire station, in germany we call them "Werksfeuerwehr" wich roughly translates to "Plant fire station" or "Factory fire station"
And they didn't even show the outside part of the water park with the awesome Whitewater River. We've visited several times and it's always a blast to be there. Bit expensive though...
The story behind the hangar structure itself is crazy on its own. It was originally built to house the "Cargolifter" a project where they wanted to build a giant modern airship for commercial transportation. Only a small scale prototype was built before the company went bust, but there was this hangar... They made large sections of the walls transparent to let in light when they converted it to the tropical island resort.
Finally something about Brandenburg. Makes me so happy to see it once in a while. Anyways, they built and outside water park now too, I need to visit again. Loved it as a kid, they have so much stuff for children to climb on its crazy.
Rulantika is my favorite of all the water parks I've been to. you have to see it It is part of the europapark and the amusement park and water park are constantly growing with more attractions.
One of the main reasons Tropical Island exists is the German weather. Three months of autumn with gray skies and no sun, four months of dark winter with little daylight, three months of spring, which is still cold, - and 2 months of summer. (July/August). In the past, summer was often rainy, so you could not go to the beach. The last three years, on the contrary, sometimes so hot and dry (heat waves from Africa) that it was too hot for outdoor activity.
I was there in January 2007. It was snowing outside and 20 minutes later I could put on my bikini. A dream. At that time, you only had to pay a one-time entrance fee and could stay as long as you wanted. One man stayed over 200 days. 🤣We stayed 3 days. Apparently this has been changed and you have to pay entrance fee every day anew. Loved it there.
i have never been to this exact water park, but what i can recommend if you come to germany one day, is the therme erding in bavaria. there are 2 areas: a big water park with awesome water slides for the whole family, and also a gigantic thermal spa area, full of saunas and only for adults (nude area). the whole park is very close to munich, so perfect for a trip and 100% worth to spend at least a full day here (maybe even 2)
I was there once on family vacation. My mum and I went to explore the jungle section. We almost got lost. But we also learned about different trees because they have different tropical trees and Info plates giving facts about the trees.
This structure was originally build as a hangar -as the shelter for the new invention " the super carrier" or as type of "Skycrane" - a giant "blimp" that would carry cargo in the sky - like containerships do on the seas - but unfortunately (?) the project was cancelled and the empty hangar was still there - so some businessmen turned it into this tropical amusement park.
I was there when that hangar was still used for the original reason. Kinda sad that they ran out of money before they could get this project fully running.
Long time ago we've been there with my little daughter. We stayed inside the buildung for one week and slept on benches at the beach. I'm not sure if this is still allowed or if you have to sleep in some accomodation thing. But back then there weren't much of this accomodation (non outside, only a few inside). You had to pay one entrance fee and then 3€ each night (which was 0€ the first year after opening). Sleeping inside a public swimmingpool was just fun with all those people around you.
My class/year from our university went there to celebrate our graduation for 2 days. Was very nice and you could get lost :D They also have saunas. Can 100% recommend for a (prolonged) weekend.
Ha! That's exactly what I thought when he couldn't believe that there are plants and animals in there 😅 Gondwanaland is just like Tropical Islands minus the swimming areas.
I was there a couple of years ago! There are actually two balloons, one goes higher up but is "fixed" so it only goes up and down. The other one does not go as high up, but one of the workers holds it by a rope and moves it around as you see the place from above.
We also had the marble slides as kids in Germany 😂 I visited that place once, I really loved it. The pools and slides were great, but to use the balloon or sauna or stay over night, you need to pay more. And my dad said we didn’t have that much money to do all that. So we enjoyed what we got. But there were to many people for my liking, the waiting time for the slides was very long. It was a great experience (just like visiting Disney land for example) but I rather go to my local pool where the slides are great too but I don’t have to wait as long and it’s much cheaper so you can go more often.
i was there as i was around 10, and all i remember was that they had a lot of bugs crawling around. like not cockroaches or so but large tropical bugs and all
I´ve been there twice. The first time when the company Cargolifter tried to build gigantic air ships there and the second time when it already was "Tropical Island". I was impressed both times.
I was there once and since then, they've added a lot of stuff. All that greenery, for example, wasn't there yet when I was there, at least not in that amount.
Ryan one day you just have to come to germany with your family...and visit all these places...I´ve been there 3 times and it´s just amazing...my kidslove this place and always want to go back there...and they have not even shown the water slides and the outside aera you can use in the summer as well :D, oh and the "one at a time" thing would not happen here even if someone twists their ankle because the person would not sue the resort because of that (maybe becasue of universal health care they don´t get bancrupt to fis that ankle) and with that give the comapny the possibility to not have to regualte the sliding process, because noone sues them...I love the freedom over here ;), I liove the comparison with the marble toy coaster thing...I had that as kid as well andthe comparison fits :)
Hi, I myself was actually there2 times already and it is WAY better then it looks on video I must say. Thankyou for the reaction. Have a nice day yall.
4:22 They're called "tinyhomes". They are TECHNICALLY mobile homes, but they're not meant to be moved much. It's just a legal matter. More and more campsites in Germany offer these as an alternative to staying in a tent.
For watterslides I would search for Therme Erding. It has the most Slides and they are pretty cool, in summer there are some additional ones oppen that aren't closed off in a hall.
We've been there 6 or 7 times now. Usually when they offer special discounts (normal prices are just too much ^^). It's impressive driving towards it. We slept once inside, but usually we stay outside, as it is a lot cheaper.
You used to be able to rent the whole place as a location for filming, photoshoots and the like, but a few years ago a German horror movie was shot there and they went so overboard with the motion picture blood that "a significant part" of the beach had to be replaced. Since then they pretty much don't rent the place out anymore.
5:40 we have a couple of these, they're not too steep, slightly wavy and very wide, so this is quite common. due to that unique design you can go a little crazy with how you go down, including getting on your knees and spinning very fast. stuff like that is definitely what makes the fun factor be similar to a normal slide, even when it looks rather boring on the outside
Hi Ryan, the Tropical Islands is really nice. I‘ve been there several times in the last years as we live nearby. The only thing I never used is the waterslide. Since the slide is not a tube, but open at the top, I am afraid at this height. My son and hubby love the waterslide.
I'm from Germany and Tropical Island is on average 2 hours away from me. I had only been there once or twice in my 28 years. It's really beautiful there.
Hello ^^ I'm from Germany and wanted to tell you that really love your videos! One of my favorite water parks in my area is the ,,Therme Erding" btw (:
My last time at Tropical Island was end of 2021 a friend of mine had some coupons for free entry and 10 free cocktails, we had a blast and all we payed for from the 250€ bill at the end was 20€ for food.
I'm from Germany and never heard of it lol. Just went and checked the prices, it's fairly cheap! Around $50/adult per day + $400 accommodation in those nice houses outside the hanger for 3 days (Fri til Sun and it's for two adults) If it's your birthday and you only plan to visit during the day, it's literally FREE, I might have to do that!
There are many options where to sleep, you have those hotelrooms shown in the video (around 150 euro a night) or you can just sleep in one of those tents ( i think its like an extra 10 or 15 bugs on top of the entry fee). They even have like small houses indoor. The nice houses outside are by far the most expensive experience and i would not recommend them unless you stay with familiy for mor than a day. The feeling of sleeping inside this huge thing is cozy as hell.
you can make camping there or stay in the Lodges or take a room for a few days even over night you can go swimming and have fun and you can drive with a balloon inside, but the ohter one is in Munich the Erdinger Therme...
This is a symbol of what went wrong in Germany the last 30 years. At the beginning of the 90s, Germany was leading in future techs like photovoltaics, wind power, maglev trains or airships. All of these projects were abandoned. China is the world leading power in solar and wind energy, and Japan builds a new maglev Shinkansen that will go at 600 km/h, while Transrapid was never built in Germany because it couldn't be operated on existing rails. Well, and the Cargolifter airship hangar was converted into a water park.
I grew up like 2 villages over from Tropical Islands and we went there quite often when I was young. The problem is, that the whole building is not very Energy efficient as the size of the building is not that well isolated, so keeping it at 26°C is not that easy. Also fun fact on that slide with the multiple kids on it - that is there I broke of part of one of my teeth, as I tried to run up the slide and was knocked over by a kid coming down.
Ahw, that is one of the biggest failures in our local and more recent history. (I personally only live an hour away by car. ) They wanted to build zeppelins as a more environmentally friendly means for transportation of cargo over long distance. Unfortunately the zeppelins they could have built there wouldn't have been able to fly high enough to cross any mountains (the alps) and would not have been able to cross huge bodies of water either. There was some sort of scandal involved.. but I'd have to look it up as all of that has happened quite a while ago. I think that ownership changed a few times before it was finally modeled into the water park/hotel it is today. And before anyone asks, I've never been inside to visit. But my dad is a graduate engineer and went to see it when it was still a construction site in order to oversee some of it as he had done some of the calculations necessary..
you should watch the official trailer of the new Europa-Park waterpark "Rulantica"! In my opinion, it's way more beautiful than this. Or, as others mentioned, the Therme Erding is also worth a look. :)
Its called tropical Island and its super expensive..if you want to slide it costs extra, so do all the other activities. Its super Fun tho. We stayed one night there
Hi Ryan, Germany also has the biggest thermal spa in the world, with a massive water slide area. It's the Therme Erding in Bavaria.

Well I don’t blame Africa for that though! I think it might be called climate emergency.
If you want to be a marble you should check out the Sommerrodelbahn. It’s a slide where you sit in and drive through a forest
Loved it there.
i have never been to this exact water park, but what i can recommend if you come to germany one day, is the therme erding in bavaria. there are 2 areas: a big water park with awesome water slides for the whole family, and also a gigantic thermal spa area, full of saunas and only for adults (nude area). the whole park is very close to munich, so perfect for a trip and 100% worth to spend at least a full day here (maybe even 2)
Therme Erding might be the place you are looking for when it comes to slides.
I was there once on family vacation. My mum and I went to explore the jungle section. We almost got lost. But we also learned about different trees because they have different tropical trees and Info plates giving facts about the trees.
5:17 it is night inside when it is night outside. The park is open till 1am and you can also book accomodation to sleep inside
This is actually one of the destinations I would most like to go one day...
You should also look at the Gondwanaland at Zoo Leipzig its basically the same but as a zoo
I remember that as a German kid, I always saw advertisements for this place on TV and always wanted to go there.
You have to do a video on Erdinger Therme. Galaxy Erding is the biggest water slide park in Europe with over 20 slides
I was there a couple of times and am going back this summer. It's really fun! Feels like a total different world.
I didn‘t realise until now that tropical islands is so crazy to people. I‘ve been there as a child a few times and also like 4 years ago.
Can 100% recommend for a (prolonged) weekend.
oh, im going there next week. If you like Tropical Island you have to take a look at Zoo Leipzig Gondwanaland. Its also impressive.
I have been there, before it becomes a resorz, when they wanted to build blimps there. It was so huge.
We also had the marble slides as kids in Germany 😂
I visited that place once, I really loved it.
I am from East Germany and I was there already 2 times! Greetings from Saxony
Oh my I haven’t been to tropical islands in sooo long, probably +10 years
Reminds me to go there again sometimes
Went there as a kid for a couple of days, really cool place, would like to visit again
It's great to stand against the glass wall in your swimming trunks in winter at 26°C and watch the snow falling 15cm away...
Actually they forgot to mention the outside area that is awesome too, it has a stationary surfing wave
i was there as i was around 10, and all i remember was that they had a lot of bugs crawling around. like not cockroaches or so but large tropical bugs and all
I´ve been there twice. The first time when the company Cargolifter tried to build gigantic air ships there and the second time when it already was "Tropical Island". I was impressed both times.
In german marbel coasters are called "Kugelbahn"
I had a wooden one with ~100 pieces
Tropical Island is really cool.
First time for me to use a sauna.
Umand we even stayed over night.
It's pretty cool, but pricey.
You should check out Rulantica.
It is a huge water park expansion with Nordic theme from the Europa Park.

They're called "tinyhomes". They are TECHNICALLY mobile homes, but they're not meant to be moved much. It's just a legal matter. More and more campsites in Germany offer these as an alternative to staying in a tent.
I didn’t even know we had this in Germany.. I guess I have to visit it some day.
I used to be there, it's fantastic! The best of it: it is open 24 hrs!
For watterslides I would search for Therme Erding. It has the most Slides and they are pretty cool, in summer there are some additional ones oppen that aren't closed off in a hall.
We have those marble things too. I instantly saw the resemblance too :)
I was there like 6 years ago, it was an amazing experience!
I remember being there for like half a day with my dad in 2016. It was so awesome but sleeping isn't possible in this high temperature.
I´ve done private pilot´s training from an airfield in 44km distance and you can easily spot that humongous thing 😀
I was there as a kid . It was so awesome !
Hello ^^
I'm from Germany and wanted to tell you that really love your videos!
One of my favorite water parks in my area is the ,,Therme Erding" btw (:
After opening there was a cartoon on a famous satirical magazine saying "Now in brazil - Eisenhüttenstadt Island"
My last time at Tropical Island was end of 2021 a friend of mine had some coupons for free entry and 10 free cocktails, we had a blast and all we payed for from the 250€ bill at the end was 20€ for food.
Almost 50K, congrats
I have been in this one, outside of Berlin, two times, last time we stayed overnight.
It's a must see places.
I visited Tropical island once already. ^^ Nice crazy steep and dark waterslide tube! And lit latenight-wizard-lasershow.
I'm from Germany and never heard of it lol. Just went and checked the prices, it's fairly cheap!
Around $50/adult per day + $400 accommodation in those nice houses outside the hanger for 3 days (Fri til Sun and it's for two adults)
If it's your birthday and you only plan to visit during the day, it's literally FREE, I might have to do that!
My sister went there with my nices when they got their "Seepferdchen".
Wie kann man denn noch nie von Tropical Islands gehört haben ;O?
Oder bist du nicht in Deutschland geboren?
There are many options where to sleep, you have those hotelrooms shown in the video (around 150 euro a night) or you can just sleep in one of those tents ( i think its like an extra 10 or 15 bugs on top of the entry fee). They even have like small houses indoor. The nice houses outside are by far the most expensive experience and i would not recommend them unless you stay with familiy for mor than a day. The feeling of sleeping inside this huge thing is cozy as hell.
@@marzok9632 Ja, das ist echt unglaublich ... dachte auch das kennt jeder in D.
God damm i love Tropical islands it was always so fun to go to this place
you can make camping there or stay in the Lodges or take a room for a few days even over night you can go swimming and have fun and you can drive with a balloon inside, but the ohter one is in Munich the Erdinger Therme...
(I personally only live an hour away by car. )
They wanted to build zeppelins as a more environmentally friendly means for transportation of cargo over long distance.
We stayed one night there
I'm German, I've never heard of this, and I now know where I have to go this summer! 🌴
that place is actually so fucking impressive, i really want to visit some day
Its so big and high, that you can sometimes see little and thin clouds/fog under the roof top.
For actual water parks you should look at the galaxy Therme in Erding. Tropical islands is more of a vacation place, just indoors
Thanks, Ryan, that's not even that far away :) Never heard of it.
I think it is called hangar, the place where a blimp is hanged.
