How to Throw Plates with a ROLLING PIN

- In this video, you'll learn how to throw a plate on the wheel using a rolling pin. It's a clever technique that will challenge your understanding of wheel throwing. I saw @matthew_fitzsimmons demonstrate this and I had to give it a try. It makes your plates very flat and there is little to no water needed. However, I don't think this technique will ever replace the traditional way of throwing a plate but it's different and fun. One benefit is that you can reuse the clay right away and the plates are already drier from lack of wheel throwing water. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

I use a tube of pvc pipe and add water while flattening. Smooth and fast.
That was really cool. I’ve been kind of afraid to start doing any plates because I’m 64. I guess that’s dumb letting your age hinder what you do but I might try this dough pin method. Thank you so much.

Thanks for sharing, I'd love to try it, might be easier / less stressful on your body. Recently I saw Lois Hook on TH-cam try a similar method for a dinner service she is making. This method reminds me of the industrial pottery videos when potters use a jigger to speed up the production of plates. Again many thanks.
It is very much like a jigger. Wish it were as easy too 😂 It IS a wrist saver for sure. I don’t make a lot of plates so I still need more time with this technique but is quick and consistent so far 🤷♂️

I think I’d like to try using less for the rim forming part too. Maybe it can be done with no water?
Ta! Saw similar method by Michael Wendt who is quite innovative in his ways. Used much more water, so I look forward to trying this drier....hope it will work with PVC as a roller.

It should. I do think in hind sight a little more water would help. Although then it would dry slower so maybe there’s a happy medium somewhere in there.
@@CeramicJim I think with the pvc pipe it won't work too well without water, worth testing the limits to find out.

If you can. Get the Shimpo VL Whisper. The best, hands down.
I bought a Shimpo Aspire which is a portable (sits on any table top) and I love it. It is heavy enough it doesn’t move on the table or anything. Very nice.

Jim I have an unrelated question. I have been trying to google what metals can be fired at cone 6. I am making stuff to hang, but need to put something in the clay to hang it when it is done going thru 04, and 6 come firing. Any suggestions?
I recommend Kemper High Temp Wire. I’ve fired it to cone 6 and it holds up great.

What’s the white trimming tool you put in the center when trimming?
It’s something I recently got from diamond core tools. You can just use a Snapple cap too. It helps you apply downward pressure when trimming. Not as necessary with plates but I was removing a lot of clay so I used it. It helps a lot on taller cups and tumblers. It also has markings for 1/3s 1/4s 1/8s etc if you wanted to marked evenly spaced designs.

@Ceramic Jim, Is PVC pipe for rolling pins? And paint stick and fishing line for wire tools?

No worries I get it. The pipe and the paint sticks are for slabs. Rolling on the paint sticks as tracks helps keep them even. The washers and the fishing line are DIY wire tools.
you can buy tiger tail for a very reasonable price and it will last forever. Got the beading section in any art store, these have a plastic wrapped wire coating and are worth the investment.

I have an old Shimpo RK. I think it's an RK. It's from 1980.
For those who can't throw pots...
super cool technique but pretty wastefull.4 pounds for a normal dinner plate is a verry big amount.
I agree in part. There is certainly a learning curve with this method and it’s new to me.
You can reuse the clay right away because it’s not as wet. And I probably could have used less to start with. It’s also good for the wrists which if you have wrist issues I think it’s worth it regardless of the waste.
