    I watched this video quite a while back and have come back to it several times. I have used cardboard take out containers to make containers with and I make sure to make them look like what they are and everyone LOVES THEM!! They look like takeout but are of course ceramic and people can’t get enough of them. I just want to say that the lines on these can be a good thing.

      I get the clay off the molds at the earliest stage possible! As soon as I have my footring on, and it begins to stiffen and not warp I remove to avoid over-wetting the molds! They also go moldy and the particles expand- which I’m afraid will ruin them with repeated exposure to it!

    How do you like to dry these in order to prevent warping and movement in the firing? How might a person stack these in a wood kiln firing?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  วันที่ผ่านมา

      The most important thing for me is to dry things evenly. If they dry unevenly, the rim might shrink before the bottom part and then you get warping. I usually dry things on a porous surface, such as a sheet of flat drywall, and cover things with a couple layers of a heavy bath towel. That usually has good success for me with drying things evenly. Also, I would not recommend placing flat items on the bottom or the top of a kiln. I would sandwich them more in the middle shelving with spacers tall enough to allow the form to heat evenly. For big trays, I usually have a minimum of 3 inch posts. Too close together, and the edges heat up quicker than the middle - which again can cause warping or cracking.

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  วันที่ผ่านมา

      And, as you were talking about the wood firing, I would either put them directly on a shelf with your wads, or you could wad them one inside of the other if you wanted to have a little bit of a ghost image on the interior.

    how long did it take for them to become leather hard? can I place outside in the sun for the drying process to happen faster or will I potentially cause cracking with fast drying?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The drying rate will be determined by individual characteristics of studios... like, how much humidity is there, are there drafts, etc. In my studio, I usually would cover with a heavy (bath type) towel for 24 hours to get it leatherhard. That being said- fast drying isn't as much of an issue as EVEN DRYING. if you can get it to dry evenly, that's the key. I have my kids dry under towels to help dry evenly. The towels allow air to pass through yet at the same time help to keep the humidity more consistent. Uneven drying can cause cracking and warping. Say for instance, if the rim dries faster than the base, it starts to shrink, and causes stress on the bottom which hasn't started shrinking... that's when you get pesky cracks! Slow firing also helps to lessen the stress of heating evenly too with big forms! I hope this helps!

    Your videos are such a great resource! Thank you. I'm working with molds for the first time and I have a few questions for you: One, do you let the clay harden slightly once you roll it out but before you put it on the mold? Two, what is the tool you are using to remove the little bits of clay. It looks almost like a needle tool but with a brush on the end. The video is moving so fast there I can't really se it. Three, how do you attach the handles to the platter if you glaze and fire them separate?

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Victoria! This video is showing Stoneware - Standard Brand 153. You can certainly use lowfire clay for these too. I have chosen stoneware simply because when I made this for my Ceramics II students, they are utilizing these techniques on their Textured Slab Sets project which they are doing out of stoneware! For my personal pottery at home, I typically use Laguna B mix with grog- which is a white stoneware! :)

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Slabs differ on the size you need it to be - smaller slabs can be thinner- larger slabs thicker. Whether a clay has grog is another consideration along with the moisture of the clay when rolling. The slabs for those in the video ranged from 1/4” to 3/8”! You have to experiment with your clay!

      @@KaransPotsAndGlass Very true! Found a couple of them on "Operation Clean Up" Day in our town, from a couch gone horribly wrong. Now, my question is, does thickness of the clay slab make a difference in avoiding warping? I used a form to make a nice oval tray, and I don't know if it just dried too quickly or if I just made it so thin that I was losing from the start. I even tried putting weights on it as it dried to no avail.

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass
      @KaransPotsAndGlass  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@catherineyoung3889 Yes, the thickness can aid in the prevention of warping! What you really want is even drying to help prevent edges from drying first and pulling upward. If you have a footring, I recommend it to be placed under the interior angle change (most recent short video is about that) Also, never place on stilts to fire!

    • @KaransPotsAndGlass

      Good question!! So, if the pieces are smaller than a dinner plate, I often recommend 1/4"! But, since all of these are slightly larger, I recommend 3/8". That being said, that is based on my cone 6 claybodies. Some people may find the large ones can be thinner. But, I find that thinner than 3/8" may warp with the clay we use in my classroom!
