    I was under the impression that full-frame lenses and APSC lenses result in different exposure at the same aperture number (e.g. this Viltrox 27mm at f/2 vs the Nikon 40mm at f/2). In fact, with a simple test at home I realized that at the same aperture they result in nearly the same exposure. The 27mm is a tiny bit darker, but this should be due to the fact that actually 27 * 1.53 (APSC crop factor) = 41.31, not exactly 40. So, perhaps that could account for the ever so slightly dimmer exposure from the Viltrox. But the difference is so tiny that essentially they are identical. Of course the DOF is NOT identical due to the different focal lengths. In conclusion, shooting the 27mm at f/1.2 TOTALLY beats the 40mm f/2 purely in terms of exposure.
    Of course, the image has less resolution (19mp vs 45mp) and therefore noise is more noticeable at the same ISO but this gets so complicated that if you'd like more about crop factor equivalence, check out this detailed article I found: photographylife.com/equivalence-also-includes-aperture-and-iso

      Crop factor doesn't change aperture, and thus exposure, at all. Printed photos don't get darker by cropping them with scissors either. It's a common misconception. The smaller image circle means you collect less light in total, but less light on a smaller area is still the same amount of light per area. The only thing crop factor can have an impact on is depth of field, because the crop leads you to choose different focal lengths or subject distances. The small difference in exposure that you do see is likely a side effect of a different optical formula, e.g. some lens element absorbs or reflects a little bit more.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@CobraFast Yeah, that's what I realized through this experience. People have said that to me before and I just believed it. In fact I use think exactly as you put it: "less light on a smaller area is still the same amount of light per area."
      This was always very logical to me, but then someone convinced me otherwise. I didn't think about it much though since I always use full frame lenses, but glad to clear this up once and for all (and prove it to myself with some real world results). :)

    Enjoyable post and cool pics, Lukasz. Learned new technical term “mega-pickles”😊. If you shoot on FF w/crop lens but keep FF mode so that you see the image circle, as you mentioned, I wonder how PS would complete the image via generative fill. Worth a try?
    Bus pics and shop at 17.19 (layers) my fav.
    Not heard the bit about better AF at wider apertures before. Street with railings at 5.42 - pedestrians in center, reserved for them?
    What did the first red lantern sign translate to? Can only imagine the aromas of that narrow alley w/food shops.
    Overall blue theme in this one, including host t-shirt.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I would love to try that, but the camera just won't let me select FF mode while using the crop lens. Older Nikon cameras would allow this, so I dunno, I guess they removed this function for no good reason. I love the bus pics too! Was very happy when editing those!
      The better AF thing is just my hunch but it makes sense to me and it feels like I've experienced it in practice. But this is purely anecdotal. Yeah, at 5:42 the railings are just dividing the sidewalk from the street since there are no proper curbs here. The first red lamp says 'yakitori' or grilled chicken, and second one says 'kushiyaki' or grilled sicks (meaning stuff on a stick).
      Haha, yeah I noticed the shirt matched beautifully with the blue hour when I was color grading this one. Was very pleased with that! :)

      Yes, I do, but during the shooting of the video I was a bit unsure. I never use crop lenses or cameras so I never really think about these things until I had to explain them on camera. Shows you how little we prepare for these videos, haha.
      And AKSHUALLY, the crop factor for Nikon lenses is 1.53, so the effective FOV is equivalent to 41.31mm on full frame. 🤓🤓🤓

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, that's something I thought too. The lens feels great no the gigantic Z9 but it would be feel ridiculous on a tiny Z50. The balance and weight would be very far forward and I imagine with the tiny grip it would be uncomfortable for me to hold.

  • @mandula10
    @mandula10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yeah, using a a DX lens on an FX body using FX mode is definitely interesting (at least on the Dxxx series). The F-mount Nikon 35 mm f/1.8 DX projects a perfectly usable image circle wide open on full-frame sensors and it's fun that it can be used in FX mode. It projects such a large image circle to the point where I don't understand why they market it as a DX lens, haha! Not sure why they force and limit full frame Z bodies to DX when a DX lens is attached. Takes away the option and therefore also limits creativity, in my opinion. :(

    • @EYExplore

  • @Mudganon59
    @Mudganon59 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Bought that lens in FX mount for my x-h1. My only complaint is that now i want wide angle😂. From my testing i found that with close focus there is a little bit of loss of contrast and gloom around the whole frame. at 1.8 everything is good and gets even better at 2.8. My only complaint is that sometimes aperture is a bit jumpy and exposure lock randomly darkens image 0.3 of a stop. Maybe its software issue, maybe its x-h1 issue, which is quite old. And sometimes it slightly misses focus even at f8. This is think is old AF tech messing things up.

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm, interesting. It could be that the lenses are a bit different for Nikon/Fuji/Sony. I think they have to be because I'm guessing the flange distance is not the same on all these cameras, so the optic need to adjust for that. As for AF, as I said in the video, it was amazing for me (as usual on my camera) so I felt not difference from my other lenses. If anything, it was better than my 40mm f/2 (which I sold yesterday since this easily replaces it). :)

    you were complaining a little about the "loss of megapixils" leading me to ask, in street photography why do you really need all those megapixels for. Not trying to be snarky, seriously unless you crop the hell out of an image and can't use the upscale software, in all honesty I don't the need for more than 24 megapixils for street work. As you also shoot with thr Richo GR III I was surprised to hear lament the loss of megapixils as a bad thing in street photography

    • @EYExplore
      @EYExplore  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, yeah that's the conclusion I make, it's not a big deal. Didn't I say that? I pointed out that it's a loss of resolution because... it is! But it really makes no difference because (on this camera at least) you still end up with around 20mp, which is huge! I feel I said all that in the video lol. To me, the genre (street, or whatever) is irrelevant. I don't see what that has to do with anything. What matters is how large the photos will be viewed eventually. If I want to print my street photo 100cm wide (something I've done) then I'm gonna want that resolution.
