Dreq Magikarp strangely enough, Gef seemed to do both good and bad things. Apparently, despite the fact he said things like “I could kill you all if I wanted,” and threw pebbles at the windows at night, he was also very helpful. He woke the family up when they overslept, and put out the stove when they forgot to. When they had mice, Gef took the role of a cat and became a mouser for them. It seems as if, in the unlikely event he’s real, that he wanted to scare people more so than seriously hurt anybody. To the point where, according to Wikipedia, when he hunted mice, “he preferred to scare them rather than kill them.“ First conclusion? Hoax. Second conclusion? Fairfolk. Third conclusion? @@XAtTheBusStopX it's possible. One of the investigators that came out to the house had a white cat jump in his lap that he started petting. Noone else could see it. Omg, this is about Gef! The literal bane of my existence as a small child, I read about him in a childs encyclopedia and scared the living shit out of myself. I was afraid of mongeese for years.
Fun fact, while the plural for goose is geese, the same does not hold true for mongoose, in which the plural is mongooses. I apologize for correcting you, I don't like the plural myself, I think it's an annoying little quirk of the English language
HOw does this only have 476k views?! My gosh. I remember reading a book in elementary school that had the story of "Gef" in it. I told this story before via youtube comments...... I'll never forget the pic, which was Gef looking through a hole in the ceiling and the family just going apeshit. haha
This is still one of my favorites of yours, Neil. I've been listening since Live From The Haunted Candle Shop. Your musical talent and quality of sound is always improving. Super jealous of your skills, keep up the amazing work!
Forgot this song existed and suddenly remembered when someone was talking to me about a mongoose at his uncle's house. This song had me in a chokehold back in middle school. I remember downloading a rip of the TH-cam video and saving it on an SD card to listen to on my Nintendo DSi because that was the only device i had that i could listen to music on lmao. I am feeling a little old right now remembering all this but I'm glad to revisit this song. I remember loving the video a lot too.
The guy who moved into the house in 1947 after the Irvings left shot Gef dead. Even if he wasn't dead, it would still be another thirty-nine years until Neil was born, and then another twenty-three after that until Neil made this song. Besides that, Gef would still probably be in the Isle of Man to this day. Unless Neil could travel over there, find him, and bring him back to Massachusetts, I don't see how Gef could be there to sing this. Gef would've probably never let anyone record his voice anyway, so it's a moot point.
Gef never let others but the family hear his voice. He never let any recordings of his voice be made. Also, Gef was found outside the farmhouse and shot dead.
This is one of my favorite music videos ever, it looks so simple and complex. And the fact that it's from 15 years ago also makes it... so different. And yes, I'm addicted to Lemon Demon.
0:04. That. That bit right there is what got me into Two Trucks and subsequently all the albums that aren’t Spirit Phone. I may not like this song any more but it’s done wonders for me.
You know, when I first heard this, I was all, "Why does this remind me of my childhood?" and then I read the comments here, and it all became clear. I had a book that detailed Gef the talking mongoose's whole media sensation thing. Also, this sounds very TMBG inspired. I love all of it. If I could, I'd take it home to meet the folks.
Just found out this song was based off a ghost story. In England in the 1920s-1930s there was this family who heard scratching in there walls. They put mouse traps in it but the scratching continued. It also made noises. If the family said a name of an animal, it would imitate the call. Soon one of them taught it nursery rhymes and it soon spoke fluent English. The thing said it was a man who died in the 1850s. His name was Geff and he took the form of a mongoose. Don’t remember the rest of the story, just thought that was cool.
People keep saying that Lemon Demon's songs sound so modern despite being created a decade ago. So, I propose a theory that Neil is a time traveler that is highly likely living inside your walls.
This probably the weirdest concept for song I've heard of in a long time let's talk about a Immortal Mongoose that can talk and is egotistical enough to call itself the 8th Wonder and lives inside a walls
I wailed listening to this song on my way home thinking about an old friend who isn't here anymore "Hello, I'm here, I'm living in the wall, I know, I might be small but I am the 8th Wonder"
This song has been stuck in my head for a week. I can't believe this came out 11 years ago. My friends and I listened to these songs during track meets years ago. Nostalgic as fk.
I honestly keep this video on a playlist so actually watching the video, not just listening to the audio and seeing the part with the cobra and mongoose made it really snap that this was about gef the mongoose
i have no clue why this song makes me feel so sad. sounds like gef really is just trapped, small. shouting but none can hear. he sounds unloved and unnoticed, says he's a freak and he knows he's right. doomed to the walls. sounds somehow like he's dying too? i dunno, it just really gets me.
I absolutely love this song. I remember finding it in 2010 when I was in high school and I can't believe I just randomly came across Spirit Phone's album review and noticed Lemon Demon. It's been too long :)

@@robinjay3141 I am aware that the actual plural is mongooses. I just like the term "mongeese" lol
@@IsThatEtchas Fair enough, it is more fun to say.

Does anyone else wish there was a video about how this was made? This is one of my favorite music videos of all time.

I really hope Neil just left all of this in the woods for some random kid to find
lmao
I bet he did. 😂
If They Might Be Giants isn't aware of this music...
...It should be. It's perfect.

You do realize Neil Cicierega is a TMBG fan, right?
@@dylaninpieces2 he covered tmbg on his 2nd (6th if you count deporitaz) album, it's obvious he is at the very least inspired
This song feels strangely calm considering it's about a pretty chaotic spirit
"You're mummified"
Sweet bod guy: 😳 yall bout to make me act up
2:40 i love that part dude
the implication that Gef the mongoose turned into Neil at the end is both terrifying and also explains a lot about Neil
Why couldn't you get Gef to sing on this record?
Gef never let anyone record his voice.
James Jeffrey Paul Due to his strong personal convictions, he didn't wish to give the impression that his records endorsed a belief in the occult.

Why don't you like this song anymore?
@@rosa-acicularis7368 gonna level with you fella this was a long time ago and i do not have a clue
this song seriously saved my life in 2010. thank you Neil !
This song is still so choice
?
Choice means awesome. It was a popular word in the 80s
Thank you Jeremy, very cool
i listened to this song all the time on my youtube app on my middle school bus. 10 years later still love this song
Ghost in the form
Of Amongus
Just found out this song was based off a ghost story. In England in the 1920s-1930s there was this family who heard scratching in there walls. They put mouse traps in it but the scratching continued. It also made noises. If the family said a name of an animal, it would imitate the call. Soon one of them taught it nursery rhymes and it soon spoke fluent English. The thing said it was a man who died in the 1850s. His name was Geff and he took the form of a mongoose. Don’t remember the rest of the story, just thought that was cool.
Actually it was in Delby Isle Of Man
People keep saying that Lemon Demon's songs sound so modern despite being created a decade ago. So, I propose a theory that Neil is a time traveler that is highly likely living inside your walls.

funny how “i know i might be small, but i am a freak” is also what i tell my girl in bed.
This probably the weirdest concept for song I've heard of in a long time let's talk about a Immortal Mongoose that can talk and is egotistical enough to call itself the 8th Wonder and lives inside a walls
Gef the mongoose
whenever this starts playing on a playlist i think it's gonna be an ELO song at first
I wailed listening to this song on my way home thinking about an old friend who isn't here anymore
"Hello, I'm here, I'm living in the wall, I know, I might be small but I am the 8th Wonder"
This song has been stuck in my head for a week. I can't believe this came out 11 years ago. My friends and I listened to these songs during track meets years ago. Nostalgic as fk.
Should have more songs about stories or legends (or strange things that really exist) like this song and badboy's lalala(google translate used)
I'm a year late, but Spirit Phone is an entire album based on that theme.
this is such a smart way of displaying lyrics.

I always forget about this song. Then I hear it again and it's like I'm listening to it for the first time again and it's always a fun experience
I honestly keep this video on a playlist so actually watching the video, not just listening to the audio and seeing the part with the cobra and mongoose made it really snap that this was about gef the mongoose

The string & old piano part of the song that plays 2 or 3 times makes me feel simultaneously so elated and melancholy
1:55 this reminds me of the music of the evolution of the Pokémons lmao
Hard to believe this came out back in 2010. It feels so near yet also far
My favorite track on Spirit Phone was released 6 years before the album. God damn.
gef: you'll never know who i am!
also gef: _goes into great detail on who he is in the previous verse_
Happy 10th birthday to this video!! I love this song so much
Had the first two seconds stuck in my head for like an hour. The relief of placing "specific violin noise" was amazing.
i have no clue why this song makes me feel so sad. sounds like gef really is just trapped, small. shouting but none can hear. he sounds unloved and unnoticed, says he's a freak and he knows he's right. doomed to the walls. sounds somehow like he's dying too? i dunno, it just really gets me.
Gef had intentions to kill the family he "haunted".
