My father served in the Pacific. He was wounded by shrapnel on the Island of Morotai, late in the war. 40% physical disability, 100% unacknowledged emotional disability. We didn't know and he would not speak of his service. As youth, my siblings and I knew nothing of his military service. In retrospect, I think he was damaged badly - far beyond his physical injury- that we never knew, not even his wife, our mother. He struggled, alcohol, 4 kids, blue collar pay. When he was on the boat heading for the Pacific he received a letter from Canisius College, in his hometown of Buffalo, offering him a full basketball ride. It never happened.

Not fully it cost a great price and i’am pretty sure a lot are suffering from the horror they saw out there. Yes, we did win not just because of equipment and fire power but because of Faith in God, courage and leadership. ✝️🇺🇸
My mother said, "you were lucky if you got a baloney sandwich for the day." Mom drank so much tea with her family during the depression she could't drink it as an adult! Her father caught fish for the family and relatives! They would call my Grandpa on his birthday to thank him for his help during The Great Depression. His famiy came from Sweden and they knew how to fish! My Grandpa worked until he was 77 as a Tug Captain! He lived to be 80 and never forgot our birthdays! We always got a Birthday card with $5.00 dollars!

The consequence of the war is that it left a permanent mark on all those who fought it. Many could find NO purpose upon their return and either went MAD or committed suicide! This carried overtone into American cinema in such films as "Roman Holiday" Gregory Peck was a veteran of the Italian campaign who had forgotten how to love until Audrey Hepburn entered his life.
I too am a student of WW2. But the danger of having a romanticized view of that war and wishing to have fought in it is assuming that one would've been among the heroes still fighting at the end. It is more likely that one would be among the dead or gravely wounded. While I honor those who fought and died in WW2, and I am fascinated by their stories, I thank God that I came to manhood in a time of peace and was granted the privilege of enjoying the freedom and prosperity those men who served in WW2 risked and even gave their lives to secure.
