  • *Apologies for the two mistakes that had to be corrected through annotations during this video
This tutorial demonstrates the techniques used in the creation of a 3D Outerspace scene using GIMP 2.8. After the tutorial I spent a little time adding more to the image and using the techniques shown in this video, came up with a final image which I have placed as the custom thumbnail .

Wow. I'm a full-time freelance writer working on a space-opera story and I don't have time to do a lot of graphics to accompany the story. This tutorial was excellent. Well done, sir, well done.

May I ask what a 70 year old dude learns how to use gimp?
      I find it quite awesome.

I had done one once following a written tutorial, which had a lot more steps. You have simplified the process and come out much better. Nice job!

Nice tutorial, thank you. I would like to see more from you, and more targeted as work made by using Gimp. A nice work would be some examples of shadowing on planets and rings depnding on the angle of view and the angle of light coming from the star. Another idea, also, would be the making of alien landscapes from scratch, of, e.g. icy moons and planets and atmospheres with the planet either visible or not from its moon, etc.

I am using Gimp 2.10 and applying your settings but when I get to 2:25 to OK the HSV Noise settings I get a mass of microscopic little stars. The whole canvas is nearly white with them. How do I get fewer, bigger stars like you've got? Any ideas from the author or correspondents would be appreciated.

Oof, yeah, it's annoying GIMP changed the filter or something. Dulling is Holdness. What I ended up doing was: Dulling 6, Hue 30, Saturation 0.15, Value 0.919, Blending Mode: Pin Light, and it came out pretty well. Even though this was two years ago and you probably figured it out by now >_>

Hey, I'm using Gimp 2.10.8, and I can't seem to get Clothify to work the way you do.

In case anyone comes across this, I had to tell it to "repeat clothify" and it worked.
