    I have been following Nick for almost two years now; he earned my respect right from the very beginnig. A Humble, Generous and Intelligent man. But I have to say that I am also impressed with the way in which he has evolved himself; the quality of this videos, knowledge, presentation skills, enthusiasm, etc. This man is not stopping any time soon. Nick, you are inspirational; I will try to catch up with you....or at least, follow the lead.

    They already improved it:
    - Canvas: 'delete' has been renamed to 'remove' to avoid confusion.
    - Canvas: cards can now be dragged by the filename label.
    - Canvas: Ctrl/Command-clicking on a filename label will open that file in a new tab.
    - Other plugin views should now properly respond to selecting a card in the Canvas. This includes the Outline pane, the Backlinks pane, etc.
    - Templates core plugin properly inserts into the canvas editor.
    - The viewport will now pan while dragging nodes close to the edge of the screen.
    - Pressing Shift-enter inside the file select modal in canvas will now create a file based on your current input (same as the quick switcher behavior).
    - Improved appearance of file name modal when using "Convert to file..." Canvas action.
    - Increased the max zoom distance in Canvas.

      Also, undo/redo keyboard shortcuts now work
      "Ctrl-Z" undoes sequential changes on a canvas
      Similarly, "Ctrl-Shift-Z" (and "Ctrl-Y") redoes changes that were undone
      At the time of this writing (2023-01-06), here's the things that can be affected by these undo/redo shortcuts:
      - creation/addition of cards/notes/media
      - locations of cards/notes/media
      - resizing of cards/notes/media
      - creation of arrows between cards/notes/media
      - content of cards (atm, changes to notes within a canvas aren't able to be undone once you exit the editing of the note)

    • @KevinFlowersJr
      @KevinFlowersJr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Forgot to mention that duplicate on Windows is "Ctrl-LeftClick" and dragging a note/card/media

    Just when I thought Obsidian couldn't become more useful, they introduce this. I'm a writer and Obsidian has helped me return to old projects I abandoned because I couldn't keep track of all the different threads. Canvas takes that to the next level. I can't thank you enough for your videos, they helped me tap into the insane potential of this software for linking my thinking!

    I expect most of my work on Obsidian (or internet) will be done on a canvas, the moment I have access to v.1.1.
    It combines mind mapping and the ability to use my Obsidian archives, resident on my computer and iCloud, and keep whatever I produce on canvas in my own system.
    A revolutionary jump forward! Congratulations to the Obsidian developers, and to you too for the amazing presentation and divulgation effort.

    I previously used multiple tabs and notes to organise what I was supposed to do and categorise what I needed to do into school, life, etc. Canvas has made it so much easier! I can create a timeline of my day with notes and cards reminding me about things and it feels so much more flexible to change if something comes up that I didn't know about. I can't believe that I'm only just finding out about it when it's been out for two months but I'm very glad I did.
    Also did you know you can double click one of the edges of a card or note and it will automatically be resized to exactly how big it needs to be display the entire contents of the node? It's so helpful.
    There are so many cool things about Canvas that it's hard for me to list all the things I like about them, but apart from what I just talked about, my second favourite aspect is using it to help me create notes. When I first think of an idea, it becomes a card. I then create more cards linked to it as the idea begins to form. Once I have enough on the topic, I can put that idea into its own fully fledged note. It's very helpful!

    Awesome news and awesome video! Although JSON is a different format than Markdown, it is still a text-based format that can be opened in any text rendering software (although it is definitely harder to read for the human, compared to Markdown)-since I don’t have the 1.1 version yet, I cannot comment further about their implementation and usage of JSON, but the format itself is a good direction and should keep the future-proof intentions going.

    • @linkingyourthinking
      @linkingyourthinking  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for sharing insights on JSON!

    • @TimMorris
      @TimMorris ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@linkingyourthinking I don't think the promise of Obsidian was that everything would be in Markdown. I think the promise was that there would be no lock in with proprietary file formats. JSON is a text-based config file and the Obsidian profile and every Obsidian plugin uses JSON files. I don't think the canvas file will be migrated to Markdown. You can find your text in the JSON file, if you need it. I imagine the cards in canvas will mostly be used for labels, navigation, headings, etc. I think the real note taking will be the notes brought into or created in canvas. I can see a use case for cards "maturing" into notes as an idea develops. I don't see the canvas as any kind of lock-in of data.

    • @Solo2121
      @Solo2121 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@TimMorris I agree 100%. JSON was a great choice since it is open and already widely used with all major languages having native support for it. This makes it so the community could easily create plugins to support this if obsidian ever decided to stop supporting it. Even if another note taking app uses a different format it'd be relatively simple to write a plugin to convert to that different format. JSON seems to be the obvious choice.

    Hi NIck____ I have been lost for several weeks. I just recently discovered Obsiian - about two weeks ago. I'm sure it can help me to be a better man, IF I can understand how to use it. I have watched several of your beginner videos today, and I am beginning to see a little bit about how to work with it. I am a retired Prof (Public Health). And I read widely and take many notes to stay current on medicine,, health, climate change, world events, and more. But I believe I have become more of a note-taker and less of a note-maker. I could see I was lost, and now I am beginning to feel that I am finding the way. I just want to say "thank you" to you. With deep gratitude and much respect. old joe

    I've been using Obsidian for a few months now. At first I didnt think much about the canvas. I thought that the graph would make a network good enought so simulate how things are "stored" in my brain. Turns out its not like that. Canvas make it so much better, because I can creat my mind map with my notes. Its perfect to represent non-linear subjects.

    > Card groups - where you can draw a box (or arbitrary shape) around a cluster of cards.
    > Addressability - where each card and even group can have its own address, and can be seached for separately.
    > Add'l graphics would be great.
    > I'd also love to see some 3D effects, like drop shadows.
    > And how about colors?
    Really enjoyed your amazing video. I know alot of work and care went into it.

    This reminds me a lot on how I used to use paper notes written out from books. I used to write notes in little 5 cm index cards (with page numbers on them ofc), then put them on my desk top and rearrange them, for example to find red strings moving through the book.
    With a few more features Canvas can be that, but much better. I really want a plugin or feature that goes 'write current connections to notes', which replicates your canvas structure by auto-pasting backlinks into the relevant notes! This was basically the only remaining problem in using Obsidian as a Zettelkasten, instead of a physical one.

    Exciting. I hope that they create markdown notes of each card and links and backlinks of the connectors, maybe customizable, so that it let's you emulate The Brain for instance, just like ExcaliBrain.

    Maybe you covered this and I missed it, otherwise: I just discovered I can drag a folder from the file tree onto a canvas and embed all the notes in it! Even though it's an early build, it seems like they've thought of almost everything.

    Wow, that's impressive. Thanks for the video! I'm looking forward to starting to use this tool. I've been an Excalidraw plugin user. I'm excited to compare and use these different mapping tools in my workflow. Nick, as always, awesome video.

    Brilliant thanks for this. This is the missing link I have been looking for- allows me to visualise what's going on whereas previously I would get lost in the forest of notes

    Love your work and style. Thank you. It's early days but I like the idea. I'm a very heavy into mindmapping. I use other tools that are far more intuitive, however, I like the idea that you can view/scroll notes as part of a node. The killer feature for me would be that the connections are backlinks and new blocks are created as notes by default. That would be amazing!

      Exactly. I would skip ExcaliDraw for this. Links should be customizable, to emulate TheBrain for instance. ExcaliDraw still has the advantage that you can use your handwriting, though it's not transformed into machine typo and indexed like in OneNote or Evernote.

      As a mindmap & concepts map tool... I still can't believe what I just saw! :) That's just amazing & way beyond my expectations from Obsidian!
