  • If you are seeking an unusual city break at the top of the world - right on the edge of the Arctic - then this video is for you. This vlog shows my trip in early January 2020 to the Norwegian city of Tromsø - one of the largest cities in the Arctic Circle.
Perhaps one of the highlights of any Arctic trip is the possibility to see the aurora borealis or Northern Lights which is on many people’s bucket lists. Tromsø is the right place to see this natural phenomenon, although you also need a bit of luck (unfortunately I didn’t see them). During January there is not much daylight, but the city has a unique Winter Wonderland feeling. Indeed, Tromsø city centre contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest dating from 1789. Tromsø is also the cultural hub of the region. While there you can also get up close to some of the Arctic’s most famous residents; I decided to do an excursion to a reindeer farm and enjoy a Husky experience.

Norway, especially along the coast (where the majority of population live) is actually quite warm comparred to it's position on the globe comparred to other places in the world equally or even further south. Norway is blessed by the ''Gulf Stream'' that goes up along the entire coast of Norway, deep into northern Norway into and above the arctic circle. Due to the Gulf Stream, Norway's temperature is milder than it's position on the globe would suggest due to this warm ocean current that passes Norway.

I was there four weeks ago, stayed for 4 days, amazing experience, you'll love it! 🏔️❄️🇳🇴 Go to the tourist information located inside the main ferry port terminal building, good place for information on booking excursions. Also in the main street there is a grey fronted building with the words "arctic experience" that's the office for the Arctic Guide Service, they arranged some great excursions.

Contrary to popular belief, Europeans (not her) in a few earlier centuries never liked to live in places for years and years in the northern reaches of the geographical Inuit areas of their countries where it's forever frigid and icy almost all the time. Only Eskimos / Inuits liked such places of those three countries and Imperial Russia all year long and all around the north pole actually from just north of the Arctic Circle. . During the time of Peter the Great, North Sweden and North Norway and North Finland exported or deported all their Inuit Eskimo populations living there 300 years ago or so, living around the Arctic Circle to Imperial Russia and north Russia and Siberian Russia, in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia. This was how Sweden the other two countries got rid of their Inuit populations and Eskimo populations about 300 years ago, in exchange for money. They were exported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money. The Eskimos were replaced by whites with a Nomadic lifestyle in North sweden and Norway and North Finland in places closer to the North Pole. I forgot the name of that ethnic group, like Sami white Inuits or white Eskimos, which had a similar lifestyle to Inuits. Like Inuits, the Sami white tribes likes fish and reindeer meat. All Inuits / Eskimos of North Sweden and North Finland and north Norway were deported to Imperial Russia in exchange for money paid to Imperial Russia about 300 years ago.
