- Hollywood stuntman Flip Rodriguez is a hero to many, but not solely for the gravity-defying stunts that landed him on “American Ninja Warrior.” A beloved contestant, he hid a personal struggle. As a child, Rodriguez was sexually abused by his father. Once he shared his story publicly, others found their own courage through his bravery. Rodriguez found relief, strength and healing from parkour and freerunning, and now, as a parkour coach, he’s teaching others to overcome their fears.

It’s amazing how physical activities can be so healing for the mind. I was also sexually (and physically, emotionally) abused throughout my childhood. After a serious suicide attempt and hospitalisation a while ago I’ve been on this journey of healing and one thing that has really helped me, weirdly, has been horse riding. I don’t have the physique for parkour but riding also teaches you how to use your body to achieve something and not only do you have to build trust with the horse (which in itself is really powerful) but you have to trust yourself and it teaches you that you are capable of things that you never previously thought possible. I had absolutely no confidence in myself, my self esteem was absolutely empty, but learning that I can look after myself whilst riding has a knock on effect on so many more areas of yourself and at some point you stop seeing yourself as a victim and become an empowered part of your story and survival. So much respect for fellow survivors who put themselves out there and expose their secrets to empower others.

What about if the ground is wet? Do they scope out an area before hand? What if you step in soda or stuff has morning dew? It seems like actual city parkcour could get even way more dangeous. Is the idea more for show or are there actually ways to (safely) be able to handle those factors?
