Turns out you can remove the wire mesh on the faceplate to make aligning the controls WAY easier. And the controller works too without the mesh sheet over it. But without the mesh sheet, you have to press down the buttons pretty deep for touch detection (the right arrow on the D pad wouldn't trigger properly...). But now I've gotten the controls aligned perfectly and... Well, inputs are still a little RNG. It's possible that the controller works perfectly on Z Flip phones or other phones but my phone (pixel 2 XL) doesn't get much luck with the controller
with the Gameboy Color screen problem, try attatching batteries to it without the back shell, and then turning the potentiometer, it uses SMALL movements to adjust
At this price point it is an absolutely foolish purchase compared to the Hyperkin Smart Boy, Razer Kishi, or GameSir X2 which give you wired inputs and more universal compatibility.
It seems that the issue is relatively simple to fix. Have each button with its own capacitive plate more separate/defined and have some sort of spring system to spring buttons back into place more effectively. OR BETTER YET design it like a normal controller. If you have ever taken apart an Xbox control(or any controller), under the buttons there's this rubber membrane that acts as like a bridge conductor for the copper plates on the board itself. The idea is that you press the button, the membrane makes contact with the copper parts and it sends a signal for whatever action in game. WHY not just emulate that/copy it? have something like this but instead of those shoty looking plates, use something like the rubber parts of a controller and have the actual part that make contact capacitive. And actually I don't think much needs to even be done because i think the membrane parts are already capacitive. I remember taking one of those controllers apart and the button membrane falling on my phone, I pressed the membrane down, it did contact with the screen, and registered the input. I thought it was neat an loaded up Pokémon and played a little of that with the membrane on the screen lol Honestly don't know why anyone hasn't done something like that yet, and this is the first device close to that, this doesn't work that well though. I would make it myself but I'm poor and don't know how I would make something like that without a 3d printer... Although now that i think about it i might make one out of spare controller parts, pvc pips, and super glue... just answered my own question lol If I do make it and it works as well as I think that it might work, I'd love to send it to you!
I think maybe this could be better if the metal pads were conductive either by attaching your hand via a strap or having the face of the button be metal so it could send your finger's capacitance through
Pretty sure it works the best when you hold your phone over your head while you lie on your bed. But the real solution for that product would be to do a different design: sending signals via USB is a must for error-free button press detection.
Tokaku... THE PSP HAS GOOD RHYTHM GAMES! It was the original home for all the DJMax titles! There were like six of those! Portable Pop'n Music! Portable Taiko! Rock Band Unplugged, which was really just reskinned Amplitude! Also I know we're talking about emus here, but the PSP controls were great! Big, even Playstation buttons on a handheld! It was great!! ...the PSP was good, is what I'm trying to say here.
~IF~ it worked well I could see the DDR controller being a good replacement for the DPad and Face buttons, which would work for some games. But yeah. Pop'n I guess.
Even two Pump it Up games as well. Project Diva as well PSP is definitely amazing if you wanna have a portable rhythm game library! Hell you can even make your own PS1 eboot files and gain access to the PS1 DDR, Beatmania and Pop 'n' library if you wanted to have a handheld entirely dedicated to rhythm games.
really hope this review motivates retroid to better their products! i was interested when i first saw it but sadly for the state it's in right now i can't justify the price X_x
Android devices tend to have a tiny delay on touch response that doesn't affect general use but can make gaming, especially emulation, feel laggy. Add to that the physical barrier between two moving parts having to push each other into making physical contact with the display, and... well, you're not exactly pressing a button on a wired controller here, there are multiple layers of latency both in software and physical to consider. In the end you are better off connecting a wired USB-C controller to play games on your phone, as sleek as these are.
That mention about the pad working better "when you pick it up", that's not because of the position, but because of the fingers you use. Thumbs have a bigger surface hitting the button, and more energy transfering to the screen
I wish I could afford the Z Flip3 smartphone game controller 4 in 1 set, but I would have to buy a z flip first so that I can use the Z Flip3 smartphone game controller 4 in 1 set to it's maximum potential.
You should probably try out malody it's this mobile rythym game that has almost every mode osu has. it even has idol and skinning is super easy on it too! You should make a video covering it I recommend not downloading the 5.0 version since it's unfinished. I hope you saw this that's all
From my limited experiences, some emulators(such as MyBoy!) actually seem to have a bit of input lag, making rhythm games much harder Though this may be just due to a setting I haven't found, or a hardware issue
yes, this is a problem I've noticed as well. It's most obvious on games like parappa the rapper and rhythm heaven DS (close to making them straight up unplayable, like parappa). Though for oldboy emulating the GB games that has keysounds like beatmania and pop'n, the inputs are passable enough or close enough to the actual experience. I did do testing on the gameboys as well! Though, I probably should've tried quantifying it, but without an offset calibration system or even offset settings in old retro console rhythm games, I couldn't...
I've played Pop'n on PPSSPP before with touch controls, and I'm kind of sad that the Retroid controller isn't good. I would've loved to use one on the go
Put it on Kickstarter and ship it. And I wish the shoulder button was on the backside of the phone, not in front of the screen like that. And for now, seems like can break your screen if you put too much pressure on the button. and make it plug and play for USB C or Micro USB, add the compatibility so reading out like XBOX controller it will be so much easier for using emulator and such. and ill buy it.
This would be great if it was using an Bluetooth or wifi connection to register inputs, android won't support this kind of fast paced input while process anything sadly.
There is a game on ps4 ps5 called amplitude There is a easter egg in the game and has yet to be founded the game has been out since 2016 I dont have the skill to even start on the easter please help
Did you get a chance to mess with the standard dpad controls on non-rhythm games? I really appreciate the video, I've been looking at this product for a while but found it hard to find any info on.
Kindof a niche product tbh, but still cute also, would recommend moving the subtitles to youtube's ones instead of them being baked into the video. just in case someone doesnt want them, but idk. good video
98 bucks is very expensive especially when it doesn't really work too much, guess I'll still play Knights in the Nightmare with touch controls which plays already really well. Also please anyone, use mGBA or bizhawkand not VBA, VBA is very bad, amongst the worst emulators out there
imagine playing some fighting game like street fighter, or any game that requires moving your thumbs so fast between the buttons, i can already see that your skin will just ripoff your fingers, guaranteed!

Is this the same compony as Retroid, who makes the Retroid Pocket family of systems?
with the Gameboy Color screen problem, try attatching batteries to it without the back shell, and then turning the potentiometer, it uses SMALL movements to adjust
arent there any controllers which connect through usb c? like i can pair my nintendo switch joycons via bluetooth.
YOU CANT FOOL ME, THOSE ARE JUST SMALLER HITBOXES.
It looks nice, but it doesn't look like it can really be used for a long time as a way to have fun.

You're looking for Moonlight or Steam Link

Using the DDR faceplate with a GBC DDR game that itself shipped with a controller faceplate is hilarious
To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if this came from a McDonald’s Happy Meal
interesting and nice review! i wish the pop'n one could be improved it would be fun to have.
