    Two things you might consider on a concrete patio. You can use an edging trowel for a nice rounded edge, like many sidewalks and you can do a broom finish to give a nice texture, especially when it is outside for people to walk on. I think the concrete delivery guy did a great job...that's a lot of concrete to finish and the driver/boom operator really made the job a bit easier.

  • @sarahkosto

    I learned from an old school guy that did concrete for 40 years. We always edged everything. After floating we would wait for the concrete to set more and go over it with a hand float and trowel. The boss had some shovels he heated up and pounded completely flat. He cut a groove on the side edge for pulling the wire up. We always skreeted the pad with a good strait edge. If we didn't have one long enough we would set a pipe through the middle for the strait edge to ride on and pull it back out. The wetter the concrete is when pouring the harder it gets but too wet equals more cracks later on. A very wet pour will crack. Whenever we did steps we ordered a 4 slump, for a pad a 6 slump. We did a lot of exposed aggregate jobs also. They are harder. No hate here. Just passing on what I learned from the old school guys. I think you have a great work ethic. You don't see that in younger people much anymore. You remind me of myself when I was younger. You can't be afraid to try..you gotta do it to get the experience. You make it work with old equipment and you get it done. If something breaks you fix it. That is the way to make money. Keep it in your pocket and don't blow it on brand new stuff unless you have to. Keep expenses down. There aren't many companies that do concrete the old method. Everyone just floats it and done now. My boss would have hit me with a shovel if I didn't edge it and hand trowel the pad. But like said. No hate.

    I wouldn't bother with rebar in this application as the concrete isn't under tension. It actually decreases the lifetime due to rust, it's essential for load bearing spans, but laid on a solid base should be fine :)

      I'm getting ready to pour a 22x10 ft slab that's gonna be covered to store things. The storage room will gets about 3 hrs of direct sunlight a day here in Fl. I'm using the strongest concrete they sell with the additives for extra strength. I see lot of very good concrete guys on YT that don't use rebar, mess, or plastic in warm climates for much larger pours than mine. Are any of those necessary for my size slab? My base has crushed shell that has a very hard pan under it from it breaking down over the years. I'm not trying to be cheap, but I don't want extra work if not needed Thanks for any advise!

    Not bad. Some positive tips in case you do more concrete. Buy some pull over mud boots to protect your feet and work boots from the chemicals used in Crete. Use a shovel to settle the concrete in near the edges by stabbing up and down before floating out. It removes small air voids. Float from back to front starting at the edge side to insure it's run off pitch. Lightly broom the surface after floating from side to side for nicer finish and traction. Use concrete floating edgers to make control joints and use a hand edger to round off and finish the edges. I like your ambition and work ethics. Also, I enjoy your vids along with Levi. Keep the vids coming. You learn as you go, so do many viewers.

    Another nice job Andrew. Not as many haters on this concrete job as usual (so far). A lot of people still seem to worry about the wire laying on the bottom but as long as you give the wire a pull up, the rocks (aggregate) get underneath the wire and don’t allow it to get all the way to the bottom. Perfectly adequate for this job. If you do ever decide to get an edger, do your self a favor (and your back) and get a nice, long handled, walk behind one.

But they make so much more sense for many delivery locations than the conventional trucks used here. The long delivery chute in front allows dropping of the concrete where needed but here we use wheel barrows or hired concrete pumpers to spread it.

    I've formed, poured and finished a lot of concrete pads for myself and friends and quickly came to many conclusions but the most important is a pad around 10 feet by 30 feet is the limit for an almost fun, single day project for two healthy, strong men. Past that size, it becomes hard, back breaking work that makes you dread seeing the next cement delivery truck delivering its rapidly hardening load. More help would ease the work load but friends seem to disappear about the same time as lunch and the second cement delivery.

      Well, if the truck can place it well and accurately, that is most of the work right there. There is work in the initial strike off, but after that the finishing is not much work if you just need a simple surface like that wanted. The worst part is moving concrete and so anytime the truck can get it in place, that saves a ton of work. Just saw another vid where the truck had a conveyor attachment, it could place something like 40+ feet away from the truck.

    I like your videos, and I can understand why some people criticize them. The biggest complaint that I read is the cracking. it’s concrete and usually, it cracks we take every step to make a good pour. I really think it depends on your area. You seem to have a lot of rock in your soil. In my area we don’t, the ground is a lot softer. We pour a 6” pad for driveways with rebar. it seems to hold up pretty well in the freezing weather and hot summers. I would imagine you could pour a 3” pad and it be the same. But keep the videos coming we all enjoy them even the haters.

    Commenters need to stop and think before commenting their ignorant thoughts. In Andrew's area their is a lot of rock under ground. The ground is not as soft as in areas that is mostly soil and sand so it does not move much underneath. That is why he gets away with no control joints etc. The concrete poured that way in my area(southeast) would definitely crack. Even when it's poured correctly it still cracks. So think before commenting or you make yourself look stupid.

    that's a really nice concrete job, looks super clean, and plenty of rebar too.

    • @SergioPena20
      @SergioPena20 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plenty of rebar that wasn’t tied together. It pretty much negated any potential benefits. You could have thrown anything in there and had the same result. Didn’t you see how it just moved out of the way when the concrete poured in? It’s supposed to hold the concrete in place, not be pushed around by it.

      @th1alb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SergioPena20 sergio, i don't see you pouring concrete on any video, i think you're full of **** lol

      @SergioPena20 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. The next time I’m getting paid to do a job I’ll stop everything to make sure I have a camera that’s set up and that it’s in focus. Then I’ll stop the crew so that I can document every step for people to watch. Haven’t you ever noticed on videos done by concrete contractors that they are always voice-overs and time lapse? It’s for a reason.

    Power screed I believe looks like a decent job. I know it’s a lot easier for people to criticize than put down concrete.
    I learned doing cattle barn floors with screed pipe grading to the drains. It’s above grade finished flat so no water issues nice work 👍 great content

    Small bits of broken cinder block holding up mesh will eliminate running around in concrete in a panic. Suggest for next project, rubber membrane between concrete and house base. Concrete edger and all good. Nice vibro screeder.

    I think people thought it would crack because the mesh and rebar you put in you ended up walking on while using your motorised smoother thinking you might have flattened to the floor.. but obviously its all worked out great...I think maybe the wire mesh and rebar will be close to the bottom instead of the middle to help strengthen it but only time will tell . Great job has always Andrew stay safe

    Concrete expert starter pack: "I used to pour and form concrete with my friend and his dad (or any obligatory relative or friend) and this is not how its done this is a hackjob" " You have a lot of fans just saying you did good work, but they are just misguiding you cause this is the opposite of a good job". Man I wish I had a nickle for how many "experts" watch your videos, and any other laborers videos just to critique them cause they think they are better and can teach you a thing or two.

    Did a pretty good job for someone that does not usually do this. My dad owns a concrete company and I work for him so of course in my eyes it is horrible, but back when I did not know any better I would think it was okay. Also, a pour this size is not easy for amateurs.

    Always ALWAYS separate wood from concrete. Foam expansion joint, thick visqueen or some other heavy plastic. If the siding is hardy board and the trim vinyl you are probably OK. But with snow if that is a standard Masonite style siding and wood trim, it will rot from touching the concrete in just a couple years. The concrete holds moisture which rots the wood if in contact with the concrete. Voice of experience speaking here.

    You guys did a good job but if you want a pro finish try edging the sides of the slab next time. It only takes a few minutes and it makes for a much better looking job. It also helps prevent the slab from chipping on the edges. Also if you trowel the concrete AFTER you float it you will get a much smoother finish. But usually a broom finish is typical for anything outside. Just some friendly tips for improvement. This is the second slab I’ve seen were you left the edges ragged.
