    Sput's drum interpretations are genius.

    This was the period I was introduced to Snarky Puppy. Their earlier sound was definitely more progressive while still having that groove-based sound. Much of this period had both Mike League and Sput Searight on writing and arrangements, which was absolutely a deadly combo with all the world-class musicians as arsenal!

    Oh that horn section! They come right out and grab you! The amount of talent in that room blows my mind 🤯They always keep it interesting and engaging. I liked those change ups. Thanks, Jeff! Great reaction!

    Whenever they used a string section, it had such a SOUND...Sections were always led by Zach Brock until he left to play with Stanley Clark & he was not in the section on "We Like It Here"...Since his return, he has been the only string player, with occasional support from Bobby Sparks on Mellotron.. This cut is from 2010's "Tell Your Friends", their first album with friends and family in the studio. Sput Searight & Shaun Martin were fairly new to the band & the funk was only just beginning to join the scene.

      Man I loved the strings in this. Hard to believe it’s from 2010.

      The one that started my addiction was Skate U. I had a habit of looking at regional jazz Festivals and the lower bands. In 2011 they were playing Burlington VT and Skate U video on the promo site for the festival. I was addicted then. I’ve been thinking about rehab, but……………no.

    It may not be apparent if you aren’t paying attention to it but Sput’s drumming through the middle of the tune is absolutely spectacular.

      And he is also playing keys like a genius. He is on the ghost note band for the zildjian live series as a keyboard player if i'm not wrong...

    • @pastense
      @pastense 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@benjaminlarocque7537 you’re absolutely right! And he’s also the one who arranges all those songs for Zildjian. And although I dig Larnell, I think Sput was Snarky’s best drummer. My personal fave at least. And of course killer work with Ghost Note

    There’s a black and white concert someone filmed a while back, where they plugged a USB to the soundboard and got to synch it with their video they too, and it’s by far one of their best shows they’ve played. Strongly recommend searching for it and reacting to a few songs from that specific video. A lot of the songs you’ve already reacted to, they played differently on that video

    This is early Snarky Puppy from when a lot of the core members were not long out of college (late 00s I think?). It's always impressed me how hooky they manage to be on top of the rhythmic/harmonic complexity and virtuosic-level improv.

    I've said it before, and say it again.These guys seemes to having a very great time at work. They are very clever and are playing with such confidence (I hope that's the right word). Sure they must practice a lot, but when you get this good, I don't think they use too much time rehearsing before they are recording.

      @@StrateleStudios The DVD has an interview/conversation with the producer and Michael League interspersed with the musical tracks. Michael mentioned that fans were requesting a live recording, but he wasn't sure how to balance the quality of a studio performance with the energy of a live performance. He agreed to use the studio sight unseen on the recommendation of someone. The audience was pretty small, but it set the stage for the later projects where we see a few dozen people in attendance. The more I hear these guys, the more I like them. Check out "Slow Demon" from the same session. Mind blowing solos.

      You can always tell the people who discovered Snarky Puppy from the "We Like It Here" album, or more specifically, "Lingus". The reason is because they will always say without hesitation that Larnell is the best Snarky drummer. To be fair, he IS great, but so are all of the others. At this point, I've finally been able to see all of their regular drummers live (Sput, Larnell, JT, and Jamison) and they are all amazing and bring their own unique styles to the band. It's just too damn hard to pick a favorite. Then again, I have the same problem whenever somebody asks me my favorite Snarky Puppy song or album. The answer is whichever one I happen to be listening to at the time ;)

    That keyboard solo you liked was performed by Justin Stanton who also played the trumpet solo you liked in Shofukan. This is one of the first Snarky Puppy songs I heard and I've reached the point where I automatically sing along with the horns. 😊

    Bro, SO many elements of this were off the charts, but for me, most noticeable was the rhythmic complexity, the way the whole room flowed in different directions and came back together flawlessly. I can't think of ANY other musical groups which do this as well as Snarky Puppy!
