This Cuphead Clone is Literally Unbeatable and Maybe Illegal?

- Rubber Hose Rampage just came out, and it's a good ol' Cuphead-like! Except this one's different. It stars Mickey Mouse himself now that he and everyone from Steamboat Willie are in the public domain! But it also features some characters from other cartoons that may or may not be in the public domain. Either way I checked it out, and here's a nice edited down version of my playthrough where I had to cheat to beat the whole thing.

The developers really heard that Steamboat Willy was public domain and just assumed every animated character and asset from every era was public domain too.
most of them are in public domain, even the "Porky Pig" which actually isn't porky at all but a pig with either number 1 or number 2 in his shirt. That pig boss and wolf both come from 1943 Looney Tunes Pigs in a Polka animation which fell under public domain despite high-ish publication year since WB either forgot to renew it or maybe the studio even had policy of letting shorts slip under public domain (60 other movies fell at the same time with Polka and over 190 older ones were already there before).
Even Mad doctor boss is under public domain altho his short came after steamboat. This was because disney didn't renew his copyright.
But! There are some that aren't in public domain (like betty and i think that snowman as well). It might not matter tho as studios still could sue these devs for trademark infringement.
@@samamies88 A lot of it is, but even then they add stuff in which makes it illegal regardless, like how Porky is dropping the Jellyfish from Spongebob.
@@cursedryona6265 Have I truly read with my very own eyes someone calling mushrooms "the jellyfish from Spongebob"? (Edit: I have been informed he threw jellyfish in the trailer... or something. Mystery solved!)
@@FalkuzrulesYou did, and yes the pig did throw jellyfish, but only in the trailer. They changed it to mushrooms probably to not get sued
@@Falkuzrules It might not be featured in this video, but he uses multiple types of projectiles. One of which is literally just greyscale PNGs of the Jellyfish from spongebob
This game makes Enchanted Portals look well-made and original
Comparing Enchanted Portals to this game is an insult to Enchanted Portals. At least that game is playable, has variety in gameplay, and 99% of all the assets are not traced over or straight up just stock images from google.
@@nyancatpoptart5441 I'm saying that even Enchanted Portals is better than this game
and thats really saying something
I don't think enchanted portals is bad, I think the ideas they had were too ambitious. I say this because the art and music in enchanted portals is actually well made, but just isn't original. Enchanted portals isn't a bad game, its just unoriginal and a bit too hard. enchanted portals had actual passion and love put into it. This game is just a cash grab and has no effort or love put into it.
I forgot Enchanted Portals existed
Fun fact: that lizard boss is traced from an animation that starts like a documentary, discussing how reptiles occasionally shed their skin, but then the lizard stands up and it turns into a striptease. I’m not joking

Alright, im gonna give the game credit.
The ‘cheap shot’ involving santas present was genuinely funny and kinda makes me sad that they only cared very few times
Same! I was laughing until my stomach hurt when Santa threw a petty, unexpectedly well animated punch. The way he kept going back and forth through laughing maniacally and his shitty talking animation while random things flew all over the screen was perfect build up
This game has like 3 decent ideas buried under 20 tons of copy pasted bosses that move left to right and back
@@Zorothegallade-gg7zg yeah no kidding x-x
That part was funny but i wouldn't count it because clearly it was just lifted straight from whatever black and white film the santa is originally from, which is like having an entire stand up comedy routine made up of about a thousand jokes about Mickey mouse you half-assedly made up in the span of a weekend to capitalize on the public domain hype, then one actually really funny joke that you obviously stole from some dead guy who was much funnier and had much more creative integrity than you, and just told the joke verbatim the exact same way it he told it all those years ago.
@@sackfu7952 oh definitely it's just straight up stolen. It's just that it was in this game it stands out
I just realised Mickey's sprite is literally a traced version of Cupheads with Mickey's head
yup and that's why it has gloves randomly and it's why the map sprite is weird on diagonals - cuz they didn't have anything to trace
The sprite is so low quality I'm convinced they just ripped a jpeg, edited it a bit, and put it in black and white
What a magnificent game. The one boss that walked back and forth was the highlight for me.

I loved the one that allowed you to have a platform in the middle. Made it very convenient.
I personally liked the one that started flying in the air back and forth and dropping projectiles from the sky it added a much needed challenge
With my knowledge of cartoons I recognize the strangest cameos in this game.
For example, the lizard girl is ripped STRAIGHT from a Chuck Jones cartoon where a lizard does a strip tease.
Mr. Hyde was ripped from an Australian cartoon adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
The witch was from the Betty Boop short “Snow White,” and a lot of those ghosts are from the “Minnie the Moocher” short
This game is a fever dream…
Lizard lady’s also wearing a Phish t shirt
Frankenstein’s wearing a misfits shirt
The sun’s a Grateful Dead logo in the smooth cigar riding bear’s level
Whoever made this has some good taste in music
The dancing bear is ripped from the Oswald the Rabbit cartoon "Hells Heels", which is also still under copyright lol
Don’t forget the obvious stock photos, a couple of which include watermarks
Just realized there are like 3 bosses in this game that are just anthro animals with a T-shirt hastily edited on
The wise monkeys in the Banana gun boss are moddled after the marx bros
For anyone who wants to suffer through this themselves; pressing 9 on your keyboard gives you infinite health and pretty much lets you one-shot every boss.
They put an infinite health code in their own game? Absolutely incredible.

the first thing that happens when something becomes public domain is usually people flipping the script to make it into a horror movie where the character is a killer, but this is stupid to another level.
Nah this is stupid but the whole horror game thing is super stupid
Unironically the horror movie is gonna be better than this probably, and from what we see in the trailer, if infestation manages to be half as bad as this I would be shocked
@@alexgreer6336 Let's be honest, *it's gonna be shit.*
@@DeltaBlazin I doubt it
Ah, yes. The "cashgrab mascot horror" effect
It feels like the dev heard of Mickey Mouse entering public domain and somehow interpreted that as "copyright as a concept has been repealed entirely"
Which, you know, considering Disney's track record I don't blame someone thinking that that's what it would take for Mickey to become public domain.
But still.
Absolutely 100%, he didn’t care if any of the cartoons were public domain, as long as they are animated what-so-ever, then EVERYTHING IS FAIR GAME!
"Purky Pig" isn't actually Porky Pig. He's one of the three little pigs from the Looney Tunes short "Pigs in a Polka". The tambourine wolf you encounter is from the same short.
That said, Warner Bros will absolutely come down hard on this game. If they didn’t even let Anthony's Animation Talk make his own commentaries for their shorts for free on his channel, there's no way ripping several of their characters for a _monetized game_ is going to fly.
I'm pretty sure "Pigs in A Polka" fell into public domain
@@sonicfanboy3375Didn't stop Warner Bros. When they came after Anthony, ALL of the commentaries had to come down, even the public domain ones.

I did research for this
Surprisingly, there is one game mechanic in this game that I think is actually kind of unique and interesting: Pete showing up randomly to throw a projectile. It helps make things personal between the protagonist and antagonist. If they had used this idea in Cuphead, they could have made King Dice be the one to show up and sabotage the player, since in the game's story, Dice made a bet that Cuphead would fail to beat all the bosses and get their soul contracts.
It would have to be a different character in the Delicious Last Course, though. Probably the jumping flame from Chef Saltbaker's battle, because that little a-hole is BY FAR the most evil being in the entire game.
no so sure it is random, but hard to judge on a highlights vid. It seems more like, against certain "simpler" bosses, throwing the bomb is a visual for a phase change that comes out when the hp threshold is crossed without needing to wait for animation of the boss itself to finish.
As for it being a good addition, maybe if it wasnt so predictable. It only ever comes from the right side of the screen and passes straight over the center platform.
There was going to be a similar mecanic with a grim reaper like character, but was cut because it was proving to be too messy
Cuphead kind of still accomplishes this by making king dice the barrier between worlds, but I actually do agree that having the main antagonist show up randomly to sabotage you is actually cool.
I thought he showed up when you stood still for too long
@@foxycinnamonkitten997 nope he would show up if you took too long.

its going to get violently thrown off steam at some point. ignoring the fact that this is a cuphead clone that manages to make enchanted portals look like a saint, many of the sprites are just dogshit or genuinely poorly done. not to mention while alot of them are taken from Public domain cartoons, The others are straight up illegal to use as betty boop and porky pig from looney tunes haven't entered the public domain yet. and some of the sprites are just royalty free stock images.
Enchanted Portals isn't theft but this definitely is.
The thing is some characters that are still copyrighted with their first shorts STILL owned by their respective studios, some of their copyrights have run out. EXAMPLE, technically Mickey has been in the public domain for a LONG time cuz The Mad Doctor was never renewed for a new copyright, juuust because it was such a dark short and blemish on Disney's reputation at the time. So there are indeed SOME Betty Boop shorts alleged to be Public Domain.
Also that's not Porky, that's actually one of the Three Little Pigs from Pigs in a Polka.
Betty boop, along with other poorly named Fleischer cartoons; enters the public domain in 2026
@@TemmiePlays Well their earliest SHORTS do, the CHARACTERS are still trademarked
@@TECH097 the shorts are trademarked that's fine. you can make a cartoon about a dog girl and boy ( Betty and bimbo, and yes that's his name ) but you can't COPYRIGHT a ' short ' as you'd call it lol.

@@TsuladanGaming A bit tricky to say since the Epic Mickey depiction is pretty faithful to how he was originally portrayed in the old cartoon - even down to his singing. I think so long as it’s based on his original depiction and not any later iterations, you should be in the clear.

Also i learned this from another guy who played this game who had to stop at the chicken because even after micromanaging damage to get in as much damage as fast as humanly possible, the ufo phase is so badly coded that it will go all the way across the screen leaving no safe spots at least 3 times before you can kill it making it actually impossible even with full health.
The lizard is truly a masterpiece. How the level's name is literally just "the lizard", Also Sprach Zarathustra in the background, how it's literally just a lizard, how it turns into a furry during the most epic part of the piece. Got me on the edge of my seat the whole time, truly life changing
42:45 LMAO bro really fell for the old "Santa Claus giving you a present" trick
Every boss in this game ever:
run around the floor and turn around everytime you hit a wall. Have a single platfrom in the middle of the screen. have pete throw a bomb. then for phase two make something fall down from the sky with an absurd hitbox. Die.
Actually, a bunch of Looney Toons and Merrie Melodies cartoons are public domain, due to copyright neglect. The Copyright Act of 1909 only guaranteed copyrights for an initial period of 28 years, which needed to be renewed to be extended further.
It's only since the Copyright Renewal Act of 1992 that the requirement for a renewal registration has been removed, retroactively applying to all work published since 1964.
Therefore many works published between 1929 and 1963 are public domain, despite being more recent than 95 years. I would assume the appearances of Porky Pig in this games are from one of those cartoons, hence why he's playing hula hoop in his animations, he's probably from a public domain cartoon where he happens to be playing hula hoop.

the lizard is from an old tex avery cartoon. in it it talks about the lizard shedding its skin and then the lizard starts walking around and dancing like a stripper taking off its skin. and then finally a black bar and the words "CENSORED" appear over it and the scene ends
This whole game is a fever dream😭
I think Devolver Digital might have a couple of words about that Gungeon brand Peashooter
The concept of public domain is no one can claim ownership over it so even if two products was similar none of them would have legal grounds to sue the other as they both are aware the thing in question is within the area of public domain and the only thing they could claim ownership is features that are distinctively different.
If someone is taking full advantage over the steamboat willie style then they are 100% within their right to do so.
6:29 this part is even funnier because the dev’s reason for no death animations is legit just "I didn’t think the game needed them" lmao
The game ironically has not entered the publics domain bc of the great timing of the steam approval submission
That's literally the peashooter from Enter the Gungeon
I get the distinct feeling that the reason some of the graphics are in color is purely because they bought those assets in color and either didn't know how or couldn't put in the effort to comvert them to monochrome.
you can tell that alot of the graphics in this game were in color and then made colorless
most of the backgrounds especially
santa just punched mickey straight in the face after tricking him for a present
