Good video Brad. Agree with you about Google maps being quick - but nothing to compare to. I like some of the Tesla map features you mention. I'm sure a Googlel update will be along sometime - hopefully in the not too distant future.
There are 3 different setting for the power steering. You said it felt heavy but did not mention the setting. I have mine on «comfort» which is the lightest setting. And I feel it is very light. Maybe yours was set at a heavier setting.
I did actually all three and kept it on the middle one most of the time. I got used to it after a few days, it's just quite different to the Polestar (and the 3 previous BMW cars I owned)
As I have said before the tech and range and charging infrastructure is better in the Tesla but the P2 is better built/finished and nicer to drive. Decide what is more important to you. The beauty of your test shows you instantly what you are missing in the P2. Must be so frustrating re the app but charging infrastructure will get to you sooner or later.
If steering wheel feels heavy it's because that is how it is set up (in the settings). Switch settings and it's as light as a feather (I prefer the heavier and more responsive mode though).
Steering weight is adjustable. Many testers say that the Polestar roadholding is not great, soft suspension, superior road holding on the Tesla, harder suspension. The Supercharger network and the efficiency make the Tesla the better car and the Model Y will be even better. Interesting comparison though.
I recently did a noise test in a Tesla Model 3 late 2020 on winter tyres an dry road condition. The result was 65.5dB @ 100km/h and 69.5dB @ 130km/h. With the 18” wheels.
There's not much point in comparing noise values. You'd have to be on exactly the same road surface doing exactly the same speed with your identical measuring device positioned in exactly the same place... Even just rotating your phone or whatever you were doing by 90 degrees will totally change the reading, as would the amount of moisture on the road.
Thanks for the review. I am torn between tesla LR and Polestar2. On balance i think it is going to be about the driving experience, so leaning towards Polestar. I heard the Polestar 2 dosent have a heat pump?
@@pcr8918 - yep agreed. Looking at the VW ID Range. The heat pump is a £1.2k option - that is a lot of driving and usage before you start to break even. Of course, it,could be useful if you drive long distances in very cold weather and want it to increase the range and thus, reduce the number of charge stops.
If you get the chance, can you do the dB test with a new China built model 3 with all the new improvements (such as double glazing)? It would be good to see if they make much (if any) difference. Keep up the good work, I was torn between the 2 and ultimately ended up buying the Tesla (collect on Monday). The decider for me was range, software and superchargers (having always struggled with the UK charging infrastructure when needed for my Leaf). As you have rightly pointed out, the Polestar is a better built car, the Tesla is better at nailing the EV specific essentials.
Initially i dont really expect the Polestar app to have all that functionality the Tesla app has in its first release really. Agreed on the battery preheating that would be nice but i dont believe our polestar has hardware to do that. Overall though i still stand behind my choice for the P2 the interior of the P2 is just not for me, the P2 just felt more like a car lol. Consumption of my Polestar has been getting very much better with outdoors temperatures heating up ;-) Cant wait for the upcoming updates though of the polestar.
I'm getting 4miles/kWh (250 Wh/mile) out of a Hyundai Kona just now. Thanks for your vids they've helped immensely with my choice of new EV. I have a Kia e-Niro arriving next month.
eNiro is very similar. The Korean manufacturers make very efficient cars. I could reliably get 300 miles out of a 60kwh battery eNiro (granted with some careful driving).
I test drove the Tesla at Milton Keynes last year ( pre pandemic) and did not enjoy the drive . I stuck to my i3 as I found that to be a better drive. Having driven the Polestar for 5 months now, the Polestar is the best of the 3 when it comes to driving pleasure. It is again very subjective and I am sure for some the Tesla is a better car for their needs. In the last 20 years I have only done three drives longer than 200 miles non-stop , so the range is not an issue for me. Polestar ticks all my boxes
Nice review, scrupulously balanced! How have you found the phantom braking in the Tesla? I have a 4 day M3LR test drive and loved it but the phantom braking on the motorway while overtaking lorries was a shocker.
Did you test the actual speed versus what the car reports? The reason for asking is that Tesla is the first car that I have had (and I have had a lot and all new) that reports the actual speed as opposed to over-reporting it (i.e. most cars say 70mph when they are really doing closer to 65, whereas Tesla actually reports 70, which means when Tesla is doing 70, it's the equivalent of other cars doing 70). Not sure what the P2 reports?
Thanks, yes actually I did check it with a gps speed test and totally agree with you. The Tesla seemed to be exactly correct or within 1mph. The Polestar 2 was very close but seems to underreport by about 2 mph.
Agree with what you say, test drive the cars you are interested in; ideally for a weekend or a few days. The 'test' drive with the salesman of old is outdated... Nice review. Tesla has been refining their motors for longer than the competitors, so is the yardstick for the industry; as is their charging infrastructure. Have to say I like Teslas white interior. This is a hire car and still clean and bright, so clearly easily maintained.
Tesla Customer service here in Germany is great. Especially the mobile "Rangers". I had to replace a foggy backlight, the ranger came to my house and fixed it. No costs, no hassle just great.
I had the opposite experience, the model 3 is much more a drivers car, way more nimble and playful in bends. The Polestar wasn't playful at all, on the same roundabout, in the wet, I could easily let de model 3 move it's back, the Polestar just didn't do anything. Quite boring. Model 3 feels more like a sports car to me, quite hard, doesn't suck up all the bumps, Polestar is just a cruiser.
I really like the teslas OS, but I will go with Google map every time if I have to choose one map to rely on. No, I use iPhone not an android user and but I will never use Apples map.
Heaviness at slow speed, steering is vague! Don't agree at all, at all! If anything, the steering is too quick. I have my steering feel on lowest setting and it's still what I call quick. Been driving a G35 for the past 12 years which is my reference when describing Model 3 attributes. I do feel all the bumps but think the suspension reduces the edges of the bumps. Quietest car I've been in but you "DO" hear the suspension working on rough payment. Never been bothered by wind noise. In fact riding around with the driver window half down is a no buffeting situation. For me, it's about the charging network. I know the isn't a Tesla review per se but when folks talk about noise it peaks my interest. That is still the my #1 impression when driving, no noise. So people saying that kinda irks me. Yeah, that's the word, I'm irked! Damned irked is what I am.
Haha, there is no doubt it's a fine car and the charging network is excellent, I loved the interior and the media system. I just found the ride, handling and noise to be less enjoyable when compared to the Polestar (and mentally to me 3 previous BMW cars). However, I was getting used to it after a few days and I'm sure that after a few weeks it would be no issue at all.
Ah but - beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Lot's of people prefer the look of Tesla. I like both cars equally from a looks perspective. Each to their own.
Tesla constantly improves their cars, so the one you are receiving right now may be allready outdated to the one you receive in few weeks . They stopped the production in Fremont until March 7th. , so they are allready updating the production line again !
Comments made : Tesla consumption is great, good looking car , Tesla supercharger infrastructure is fantastic , Tesla app is great , and amazing entertainment system and has battery pre heating... yet you would still by a polestar ? simple because it’s 4-5 decibels higher road sound, and the steering was heavy (even though didn’t change the setting? sounds like somebody is trying to justify buying a polestar 2.
Actually I did try all the steering settings. My honest opinion is that the ride and handling on the Polestar are superior. I'm not trying to justify anything, just sharing my thoughts and opinions.
Thanks for the review of both! At the end of the day, it's a personal choice and the Tesla aesthetic isn't for me and I actually like the P2 interior and handling much better myself. I drive very aggressively so the Tesla didn't quite feel as stable to me but I agree it's got some nice bells and whistles.
@@rudyptdy I agree. Looks are subjective. Personally I go the other way. My thought on the polestar as a EV though is the efficiency and performance for the battery size. Yes, since we have to pay a premium for the battery size on any EV plus not having a flat floor at the rear. Not a big deal since most of the time I have no people at the back, or 3 for that matter but it still bugs me. The hatchback thing does it for me as im a hatchback sort of guy but for the other reasons Ill hold out for the model Y to join our model 3. Im just a sucker for good value for money specially since im still old school and still purchase my toys outright.
Drive them both to Edinburgh and back and see which one performs better on range and charging infrastructure.. driving to Gatwick from Hayward’s Heath is pointless
Totally disagree. Not pointless at all. This wasn't a long distance test and I never claimed it was. It was a short range test to demo consumption on short trips and is in fact my regular commute. Long distance tests are a totally different thing.
It's a range test demonstrating total theoretical range. Short drives tend to show worst consumption and some viewers find it helpful to know how many times they could complete a trip over the course of a week. Also useful if you can't charge at home but need to charge once or twice per week at a rapid. Not all battery range tests have to be completed on a long drive.
Cool, no worries. Yeah I'd love to be able to do some longer drives! Hopefully when lockdown eases and they let us into Scotland again! Also agreed that the title is perhaps a bit misleading.
Great review - probably the best objective review on TH-cam of these two great cars.
Objective?!! The guy owns the polestar

Yes weight is adjustable, I disagree, I did not find the handling or road holding to be better on the tesla model 3 in any setting.
I can't compare the Polestar to anything, but having driven the Polestar 2 for three months, I would not describe the ride as soft.

Driver feedback and engagement is more important than screens and graphics.
