The thing about mixed use areas and zoning laws is more complicated than just that. A lot of it is also history. Houston is the fourth largest city in America, has no zoning laws like other places have, and can fit the cities of NY, Chicago, and LA in its geographical footprint creating one of the most insane urban sprawls in the country if not the world (there’s a saying that “Houston is an hour away from Houston” and it’s true). And the weird part is that Houston wasn’t built for the car like many of our own citizens believe, it was bulldozed for the car. A lot of the sprawl has to do with “White Flight” and the racist sensitivities of the 60s and 70s. It’s a complicated and not always pleasant past, but I also love Houston as do most of her residents and hope that it can become better in the future. Another issue is that despite our insane wealth (Chicago wishes it had the energy and tech sectors Houston has built), even when we elect officials who promise the expansion of public infrastructure like the current mayor, they either aren’t serious about it and don’t deliver anything substantive, or it was too difficult and expensive for them to tackle, or they are lying, and we end up expanding the Katy Freeway (the widest stretch of road on the planet) by another two lanes for a few dozen million dollars.
9:28 Fun fact about us. About half of us Americans actually don’t hold passports currently. We just go to a different part of the country to experience a different culture.
Coming from a Hispanic immigrant family I joined the US military and did nine years. I'm only 35 now and I've been collecting a pension for my military service for years now but I paid a high price for that. I'm one of those burn pit veterans. My health is shit. I also have had a torn rotator cuff in both shoulders just from the training since I was 22. Chronic pain for life is the price I paid for that pension. It wasn't easy. And I can't really complain when I see vets at the VA hospital with missing limbs and horrible disfigurements like burn scars.
Grew up in Long Beach CA, now live in Phoenix AZ and I gotta say that this is the most refreshing viewpoint I have heard in a long time. It actually motivates me to go out and do something constructive.

I recently found a series of Anti American, Pro China art pieces online and honestly? They look bad ass. They make America out as some eldritch monstrosity hellbent on consuming all things, and I think that's appropriate and cool.
Loved this video. My parents are immigrants from Mexico, but I was born here. I visited my parents' hometown and saw just how well I had it back in the U.S. When I was in high school, and I heard some privileged white kids talk about how shit America was. I was stunned. The thing about the U.S. is that it is so protected from massive threats that smaller issues seem to be disastrous to the American people. I also understand that the U.S. is not perfect, but it definitely is better than a lot of places in the world. When traveling I wish Americans would see places that aren't tourist hot spots to see the real side of other counties and maybe appreciate what they have back home. It's perfectly fine to try to improve on your weaknesses, but don't become depressed on it cuz it's really not that deep and it could be much worse.
Most other countries you have to be from an ethnicity that’s native to the country. Even in EU, European passport holders are considered immigrants even if they’ve been in the country for years.
It's super fucking fascinating looking at America from a foreigners view, it has surprisingly made me rather optimistic I'm once again determined to make the greatest country on earth into a better place even if it's just one person at a time Thank you gatsu
The learning english part is so relatable. I have no idea what "present continuous" even is but I can speak english fluently because of Cartoon Network lol
I'm a native speaker who spent a few years travelling and teaching English. Can I just say, I didn't know what is was either till I did my training lol. Like with all the tenses, I didn't know their proper names, they just naturally come to me when I speak. I hated teaching people the tenses, I found it better just to drill in go to and going and went, make them practice speaking to each other and eventually I saw it starting to stick. Also another thing I realised is that a lot of non-native teachers, especially in Turkey, teach them the wrong grammar
He said "present tense" lol. It's just the verb format used when talking about things as they are occurring (is), rather than the past (was) or future (will).
As an American, it's nice to see some positivity about my country as I always hear hatred spoken about it. At times even I think that I don't live in the best country and I still live with that to this day. But this video reminds me of how privileged I'm able to be when compared to other places. Even if it is on a separate level.
Every country has its fair share of problems. But your home is your home. There's no shame in being proud of the things in your home that make you proud, just as long as you strive to create a better tomorrow with less of the things you're not proud of.
feels like the country is portrayed too sensationalistic but deep injustices and flaws still do persist and the approach should never "love it or leave it" or "it should be burnt to the ground"
It’s not propaganda if it’s true sadly. He just showed the way the military industrial complex is run by giving you the amenities Europeans get for free
I will say this about suburbs: they actually exist because of the Cold War and MAD. The idea was that we were trying to spread our population out so we can survive getting nuked. If people were all concentrated in dense urban areas, a nuke could take out everyone, but spreading everyone out would make it so at least SOME people survived.
That’s partially correct. It’s also because white people wanted to move from inner cities so their children didn’t have to go through integration. Sorry to bump an old thread.
I am very appreciative of you making this video. I love my country, and there are many who live here and take it for granted, seeing only negatives in our society and culture. Immigrants who embrace America make great citizens, since they appreciate the good of living here as well as the good America has done for people all over the world
That NATO joke reminded me of the ISAF patches I saw in Afghanistan. ISAF stood for International Security Assistance Force but you could go to a px and find patches that said "I Saw Americans Fighting".
I laughed so hard at the "USA during NATO briefings" and the "parking lots" parts.. so true. Your videos crack me up so much.. the line delivery and hilarious editing.
As an American, I appreciate your apprehension on talking about our politics because of your lack of first hand experience with them. A lot of people could learn from this (especially Americans lol). 10/10 great video, made me feel very patriotic today.
We need more mixed use zoning in cities, a good example of what I mean by that is San Francisco, it's so expensive that the city literally just turned into a dump, homeless everywhere, but if more cities allowed this, then I think that could be avoided. Mainly just due to the fact that people wouldn't just crowd and drive up prices in one area and completely fuck the place over, but everywhere could become more functional and productive since people would choose the places where they WANT to live and work, and not the place where it's the least fucked zoning wise.
Dude I’m tripping so hard rn. The homeless guy with the German shepherd at 0:05? I know that guy. He used to sit right at the corner of the street I lived on near Hollywood Blvd. Sometimes he would have a guitar and strum a little bit, and one time I saw the dog pulling him down the street with him sitting on a skateboard! I talked to him a couple of times, he was a very nice person.
this video is funny and i agree that you can find literally everyone there. as someone who is apart of an ethnicity (idk if that’s right) that doesn’t have a country (im hmong), i can confirm that this is true, that people from bumfuck nowheres can be here. both my parents are immigrants to escape the Vietnam war (and the after effects). for some odd reason my dad decided to first go to alaska, then to minnesota, and now to cali. my mom, a little more normal, went straight to cali.

I've served and done time in the military myself, while I don't regret it. Firstly, at least.from my experience you don't get paid good money at least compared to the private sector. Although yes it does help that they'll pay for school if you do at least 1 term. Secondly,.unless you are well connected or college educated,.life in the military absolutely sucks, and I promise you there is a LOT of corruption within the US military. It's just overlooked and not talked about because it's a carnal sin in America to criticize the military.
@@justinwamsley176Over the past 10 years, I've seen otherwise about it being a sin to criticize the military. @@WeirdMagnus he was just trying to add to the section of the video that mentioned negative aspects of the US. It's okay to recognize one's shortcomings you know?
It always bothers me when Europeans talk about America like we have one universal culture. Do you have any idea how big this county is and how many people live here? Every state is the size and population of a country.
Appreciate the positive outlook on America, as most native-born americans here and all you hear about on any news platform is negativity, so it's encouraging to be pointed to the positives of our country instead, which are all very good points. It is indeed a great country. Also, the criticism is well-earned too, as I heartily agree that mixed development and more cohesive urban development including public transportation would make America a much more pleasant place to live and go a long way in fixing many of our problems as a country. What many say about America being too big to be like Europe is valid too since it truly is massive and not all of the country has many people living in it, but it's true that at the minimum, population centers on the west coast, east coast, south, and Midwest desperately need it, even if you don't have European style boatloads of trains connecting every single last city and town. Even if rail networks connecting literally everything wouldn't be immediately feasible, mixed urban development is definitely needed to make America more livable and interconnected.
Your right about the military Gattsu. Not only am I debt free from college and I used my deployment money to pay out of pocket so I can send my future kid to at least a year for free. Also you can make a lot of contacts and references. Trades are also a GREAT living here I kind of wish I was a plumber.
i can't speak for every american, but in my experience the quality of public college education in the US is on a big decline even as it gets more expensive ever year. it could be that i decided to go to the largest school in my home state of kentucky because it was the least expensive for me, or because of my major choice, but the whole time i felt underwhelmed, and if i didn't have the initiative to learn things on my own i'd be screwed. i get the impression it's not the same in parts of europe.
If you went to UK then yeah I would't say its renowned for its academic rigor. Looking online it has a 94% acceptance rate, which is not great. There are great schools but they are difficult to get into and very costly if you don't receive a scholarship.
Based video. Ppl who live here forget how good they have it(regarding economic and social issues). Me included, it's always nice to see an outside perspective.👍

Stop tha glazing, bro. As an American, I can assure you that it's not the way you portray it. This is sattire, right? Our working conditions are shite, our wages dont go up, the cost of living is higher, our education system is terrible, no affordable healthcare, our democracy is a sham, we are constantly being spied on, people are secretly racist which is way worse than the open racism in Europe, 10% of the homeless are military vets. There's a reason Americans aren't as patriotic as others because we recognize that this country cant exist without the exploitation of others.
He is from Georgia in Europe, any person from a poor country would rather go to America since because the working conditions that you consider shite are x10 better than theirs. An average person from the Balkans would rather to be in a shit but super power country that has somehow more orpotunities than their own compelte shit hole.
Hearing your external perspective of my country restored my hope in this place. Sure, there's a lot of bad here, but we are a powerful nation when we work together. Have a good day man. 🇺🇸🤝🇬🇪
Lad if I had access to affordable healthcare and education I'd be in the US in no time. It's better than most places, not perfect, jesus they could take a fraction of what they put into defence and allocate it appropriately. It would make it a lot more enticing to go there. I would love to go to somewhere near denever within commuting distance by train, .....oh wait
Yeah, it drives me crazy as an American just how much MONEY (tax dollars, etc.) we have at our disposal and how we decide to dump it all into defense as if our homeland is actively being invaded.. in fact, our military has apparently "lost" trillions of dollars over the years-- giving them an incentive to just keep setting money on fire-- yet apparently cutting the defense budget by a negligible amount to go towards healthcare coverage or even just deciding to regulate the costs of prescriptions are considered "pie in the sky" ideas.. It's like having that one rich friend that has their entire life taken care of and paid for, yet they spend all of their day just watching reality tv and eating Cheetos..
Sure we make more money but cost of living reflects that too. So everything is expensive in a sense. Don't move to any major city you will have a hard time establishing getting a job that will provide you the money to live in them. Once you're poor here you're staying poor for a long time. I grew up in a ghetto and my family currently lives paycheck to paycheck atm. My grandparents immigrated here in their 20s with my mom and aunts. We did not get the American dream like some other people.

thing is, a lot of americans would probably agree with the public transit thing if they had experienced it at least once. The Auto lobbying groups have basically made it a nightmare to make mixed-use urban reform.
Houston has zoning laws dude..
They just call it a different name..
In fairness Houston has “restrictive covenants” on development which functionally serve as an even shittier version of zoning

I will say this about suburbs: they actually exist because of the Cold War and MAD. The idea was that we were trying to spread our population out so we can survive getting nuked. If people were all concentrated in dense urban areas, a nuke could take out everyone, but spreading everyone out would make it so at least SOME people survived.
i dont think thats true but its a fun thing to believe so i think ill believe it from now on
That’s partially correct. It’s also because white people wanted to move from inner cities so their children didn’t have to go through integration. Sorry to bump an old thread.
Suburbs also exist due to white flight from dense urban areas after desegregation in the 60s
@@garrettmetting6938 but if white people move back to the cities, that’s gentrification, right? So, where are whites supposed to live?
Main reason was white flight, funny and sad to think about how racism has shaped basically every aspect of our physical and cultural infrastructure

America had tons of interstate rail connections. What’s to say we can’t bring most of them back?

Yeah, it drives me crazy as an American just how much MONEY (tax dollars, etc.) we have at our disposal and how we decide to dump it all into defense as if our homeland is actively being invaded.. in fact, our military has apparently "lost" trillions of dollars over the years-- giving them an incentive to just keep setting money on fire-- yet apparently cutting the defense budget by a negligible amount to go towards healthcare coverage or even just deciding to regulate the costs of prescriptions are considered "pie in the sky" ideas..
