    I like how this guy makes improvements in every step.from soldering the guard, to tapering the tang. We need an improved model of the pilot survival knife. Make it happen.

      Thank you for the comment...yes i've been wanting to make a updated video of this for quite awhile now, as the build has evolved quite a bit since I made this video. Ill get to it someday. Are you referring to the Camillus pilot survival knife?

    As a veteran, I was even moved by your music selection. My grandfather fought in World War I in World War II and some in the Korean War and I do appreciate your honoring of our veterans and a beautifully made knife which I’d love to own and I’m an inspiring knife maker trying to teach my grandson how to do it which he loves forged in fire of course the TV show.

      Thank you. I love hearing comments like this. So glad you are teaching the new generation the art of knivemaking. Im sure the memories will be cherished for a lifetime. My grandfather was also a World War 2 veteran on the Dutch side. I have great respect and admiration for all veterans. Keep well! (Glad you enjoyed the music!)

    Fantastic! Have you ever tried heating up the tang end of the knife first when heat treating? That way the heat travels into the thicker parts of the knife first. Then turning it around and doing the beveled end. That way the thinner edges don’t need to be in the direct flame as long and reducing the chances of decarborizing.

      Thank you for watching...glad you enjoyed the soundtrack...music seems to be a highly debated subject in videos these days...😁 you are correct...i used 5160 steel which is probably the easiest to work with and to source high carbon steel. 3/16 = 4,7mm...generally we get our stock in 5mm thickness here in South Africa...which is close enough...i also get good results with 6mm thickness...

    • @zeemanknives
      @zeemanknives  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that would probably be a stronger construction...but this is not how the knife was made during World War 2...and many lives depended on it back then. Remember this is my take on a World War 2 piece ...not a Bushcraft knife...having said that...I still use the very first Paratrooper dagger I made for myself and it holds up very well. @@timcarley4515 Not "Just" drawing and cutting it out, no. Then there's grinding the bevels, making and fitting the guard and the pommel, heat treatment, a ton of hand sanding, making sure everything is straight and aligned, cutting the leather disks for the handle, shaping it, putting the entire knife together etc...but there is no forging involved with this one no. Even if the steel was forged...the entire process would remain the same after the steel has been forged roughly into shape and the title would mention "forged" in there somewhere.

      If you have never made a knife you shouldn't be talking about this. I don't know where you get the idea that there's something wrong with stock removal but it's equally as challenging as forging a knife and produces a result of at least equal quality. Take it from a bladesmith.

Would you be interested in making/ restoring this for me? If so respond and I'll give you my contact information. If not, could you or anyone point me in right direction? Thanks in advance
