In my opinion, one of the most beautiful Christmas-themed songs ever written. One rarely hears this song nowadays - forty or so years ago, it was heard somewhere in the Christmas season almost every year. My wife and I used to sing it in our home just for enjoyment. In the original version, the melody is partially carried by the alto/tenor voice. As an interesting sideline - in my congregation a few weeks ago, we dispensed with speakers, and merely had a Christmas song testimonial: congregants were invited to come up and select a song from the hymnal, then tell why the song was particularly meaningful to him/her. I chose one from the Primary Children's songbook - "I Wonder When He Comes Again" - another of the best songs ever written, and also rarely heard nowadays. And yes, at least in the German translation, the song is clearly a Christmas song. Both "Star Bright" and "I Wonder When He Comes Again" have a particularly important LDS flavor - they talk about the future Second Coming. As I mentioned in my remarks, we need to keep in the forefront that we are LATTER-DAY Saints - we should be looking forward to Christ's return as much as we reflect back to his birth in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. Yet one more absolutely beautiful Christmas song is Mary's Lullaby (by Kleinman, I think). It used to be sung in the nativity scene at the Arizona Temple Easter Pageant - to my thinking, one of the high points of the Church's best pageant. I've heard the song only once or twice since leaving Arizona.

@@doofus0123 it wasn't in a regular hymnbook. I don't remember what name was on the book. All I remember was that the book was red, and it had a bunch of hymns in it. Like I said the RS sang it every Christmas season in Sacrament. I don't even know what happened to my mom's book that it was in. It might just be packed away somewhere with other things. I'll see if I can find out.
awesome....just sang this with the sisters at our Christmas sacrament mtg..LDS...Merritt British Columbia...I learned it a very very long time ago...sang it for a community concert in Vanderhoof BC in the 80s....always a favorite
You two were so lucky you got to perform during this time as almost 5 months later the building was destroyed in an accident fire on May 17, 2009 but was rebuilt & dedicated on June 19, 2011
Yes, we were for sure. I was attending church service that day when the building caught fire and it was a scary, and sad day. To watch your church building go up in flames...it was sad. But, how blessed we were that all of us got out of the building and no one was injured. The Harvard Divinity School across the street let us rent space until the chapel was rebuilt and dedicated. The RS in the Ward I grew up in San this every year. The one n the new hymnbook is in a different key, and has different words.
