I've tried to inculcate in my son and daughter that they should never feel "flattered" by the attention of anyone. If you're made to feel like someone "above" you is doing you some kind of favor by paying attention to you, it's time to walk away and reevaluate their motives at the very least.

I don't know if this logic tracks. When you are in love with a person, you tend to feel flattered by their attention. Especially in your young awkward years. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the person or how they are treating you. What needs to be reevaluated mostly is probably yourself and your own perception of your self worth.
@@MugenNiFukuzatsuna The main point of my advice is that people who intentionally try to make you feel like they're doing you a favor by paying attention to you should be avoided. Not saying feeling flattered in general is bad (I remember and miss those days myself).

I was in a relationship and ended up bankrupt because the person I was with always lost a job and I funded his life. Frankly, I was depressed and desperate for affection and he played me. One day I realized what I was doing and ended it. The guilt and shame after were overwhelming. But I recovered and now I can see why people fall for this type of scam.
Thank God you got out. No one deserves this.

You didn’t mention the possibility of Simon being a psychopath. Many of his characteristics like lack of empathy, no apparent conscience, being a con man, very charming, not learning from his mistakes

I watched it last night with my teenage daughters and used it as a teaching moment.
You watched typical propaganda which always tries to portray females as victims, even when they're gold digging perpetrators. Women ave been scamming men for millenia, that's what you should be teaching your daughters about.
You're an amazing mom!! As I was watching it I thought it really was a good moment for me to learn and be educated about these types of people.
The voicemail messages he left his girlfriend who was selling his clothes had me in stitches. He was angry then begging then sweet back to angry, then fuming, apologizing
What really had me in stitches is how she ended up conning him back, but not returning his clothes or sending whatever money she supposedly got from selling them.

My first question to him when he asked for help would have been "You have a wealthy father, who probably not only can give you millions to help you out, but probably has contacts all over the world who can help you - why are you asking me?" Not that i am blaming the victims - when one is conned, it is very hard to tell the wood from the trees. Thanks to these brave women for opening up and communicating with the world to help prevent him doing more harm.

Exactly!! I think what makes these con-artists so successful is being able to sniff out particularly vulnerable women and then preying on them. Perhaps there's a naivete that they all share because if that was me, the first thing I'd say is "Uhh...Isn't your father a billionaire? Why don't you maybe ask him?' The fact that these women didn't think that tells me that they're probably more scammable than not.
And I'm almost sure he would have come up with an answer in the blink of an eye. And they would have believed it.

They are only victims of their own choices. Obviously they are all shallow superficial narcisisstic women. The attention they are getting now will not help in fixing whatever is wrong with them, quite the contrary. It is funny though...thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of men get swindled out of their own money by women and the court system...nobody bats an eye.
I have a male friend who fell for this type of swindler. He only gave his "boyfriend" about $10,000 so the guy could afford to move from across the country to be with my friend. Of course, when the guy never showed up, it became pretty obvious that there was a problem. Sadly, my friend got swindled a second time, although he figured it out much sooner and didn’t give the guy much money. I think there’s a psychological reason why people fall for these kinds of hustlers; my friend absolutely refused to see what the rest of us could see and he got very upset when several of us warned him about giving so much money to someone he barely knew.
Yep. These con artists know exactly who to target. The women in that documentary were definitely apart of “the type”. There are sheep and there are wolves and then there’s the low down dirty shepherd.

People in this business also share names and trade contact deals, and stories. It is likely that a person will be targeted another time.
When I saw Cecilia went with him in his personal plane on the first date, it was just unbelievable to me that she never considered the possibility of being trafficked. Also they didn't see the fact that there were enemies after him as a warning to withdraw. Why would one go in a relation risking their basic safety?

I was screaming seeing how excited she was to go out of the country with a man she just met. That was insane.

It's wrong but still impressive that this guy keeps finding ways to bounce back into money and bounce around continents after prison ect. Like many conartists - if he just applied himself to something legal- he would probably be successful there too.
His victims were undone by their own greed in some ways. They thought they had landed a billionaire and so they opened their wallets (as well as probably their legs).

All of these women gave Simon so much money and if that's all they were interested in they wouldn't have trusted him. I think many people are attracted to larger than Life personalities which is where the con is really successful
I think that's Simon is probably reasonably intelligent. But I'm not sure he would be very successful in the real world. It seems that his talents are very superficial or at least what he showed in the documentary. It's probably easy to take advantage of people if you have no conscience telling you not to. There are many gullible people on tinder because they all "want something good to happen"
The victims all set themselves up because they had decided without realizing it that they were going to prove themselves that Simon was real because they googled them and saw his Instagram. Well it turns out that's not actually very reliable. It's easy to create a fake Instagram. Or just tell people a bunch of lies when they don't know anything about you. Simon would have been intelligence if he could have kept the scam going for more than a few months but he couldn't do that so the scam was designed to end.
@@nighttrain1236 this is true. the first gal featured in the movie (Ceceilia) committed credit card fraud against Amex to help Simons transactions thru. She is responsible for those debts.
It’s messed up how the guy only served 5 months and the women are all in a crazy amount of debt because of this dude and now he’s back out there living his best life.

These women get no sympathy from me. These women saw $$$ and thought they hit the jackpot with that man. Make no mistake they were gold diggers who got the table turned on them. I don't see the women as victims i see it as karma.
@@Luka9m That sounds like a you problem. Simon conned a lot of men in his life too but now sticks to women because they're easier targets. He was disowned from his family as teenager and only knows how to lie and manipulate people. Just so he can blow stolen cash on a hedonistic lifestyle. He doesn't even do anything smart with the money he gets from cons.

He made them all believe he was in a dangerous life or death situation, and used their concern over his well being to steal large amounts of money. I think this is a bit different.
I've definitely met a Tinder swindler before. After we met she literally was asking if she could maybe move in and it was only like 3 days after we first met. I still follow her on Instagram and she makes a life out of moving from guy to guy, basically anyone who will support her until I guess they or she runs out of money or gets bored. I feel like I dodged a bullet with her.
Lots of women like that out there dude. Watch it! Free meals, rent, car. Guarantee she would be bangin' some other dude while she was living there rent free. Sadly, there are many simps out there who would have taken that offer. They are as dumb and naive as Cecilia. Stay safe out there!

This case blew my mind. I have had males who asked for a *loan* of a tidy sum of money during dating process, not engaged just dating. I think people perceive me to be much more needy than I am. It was always a solid NO, and a withdrawal for me slowly from the relationship. Yes Simon was a con. Interested me how women would put themselves into 100000s of debt over his security concerns. I would said go talk to your dad or a wealthy friend. I'm a poor woman you selected off Tinder. Yes I think the women were at a very vulnerable place in their lives. It's sad.

@@fons2623 I have sympathy for the 6 women it wasn't only 3 he conned. He was using his looks love bombing, moving the relationship fast, making the girls feel comfortable with he other players in the game. A wealthy man asking for use of a cc card might for some in the midst of a loving feeling relationship seem like a logical step. I however, have met con's from a very young age with money, cheating etc and learned very young not to trust a man to do as he promises. These women may have been sheltered I hope they are in a better place now.

Seeing your experience with this type of guys I fear Tinder (and other apps) are riddled with scammers like him and vulnerable/trusting people like these women.

Good for saying no. Any guy asking for a tidy sum of money during the dating process isn't ready to date. Sorry for the women who went through this. It's not cool. The worst part is this dude is free and making money again while dating a different model. No punishment, no karma, no nothing. It's sickening.
Without wanting to victim-blame, I don’t have any respect for people who are impressed by others posing with flashy items. When I see photos of guys in front of their cars on Tinder, I always swipe left. It’s such a red flag and they just seem so boring.
I can confirm. I dated a luxury car salesman and it seemed to be his entire personality and he seemed to over compensate for other things because he was always flashing stuff.
Lol also most the time I assumed it's someone else's car.

When you're looking for a 1 in a thousand person, you can't waste your time on random people: chances are you'll NEVER get a good one. You only search where major preselection on several levels already exists. 99.5% of people can't even access these circles.
@@exnihilonihilfit6316 Well, I disagree. I knew a chief executive's son from working at a telecommunications company's corporate office. He was always swiping on Tinder. Always. He was very approachable and socialized with everyone. In fact, after a company event the group wound up all going to an arcade and it turned out his favorite bar was next door - a run down little billards bar. It depends on the person I think. He was in his 20s and didn't really like socializing in his dad's circle. If he met a girl and said "I'm rich want to go to Spain with me" it would have been 100% legit. But also he wouldn't be bringing a random girl on daddy's jet after a few hours of knowing her. Maybe the yacht. Not the jet.

I didn't understand why the second girl thought he was such a 'good friend'; from what was shown in the doc it just seems like they bounced around Europe partying together, and I kinda got the impression she helped him almost out of a sense of obligation for accepting his 'generosity'. Don't accept expensive gifts/experiences from ppl you barely know!

I think the guts of the women profiled in the Netflix series is an interesting factor, as well. On the one hand they were gullible and easily swindled. On the other hand, these three all played a part in bringing him down in spite of his scary threats and their own gullibility.

I had a boyfriend that wanted me to take a loan so he could start a business buying and selling cars (that he had never done) for more than a year's salary. I said no and he got really pissed with me. We were together for more than five years but our relationship started going bad after that. We broke up a few months later after I found out he had several on the side girls.

Why would a 'billionaire' have to go on a dating site? Doesn't seem sensible to think that would happen. But them asking for money would be very suspicious. Billionaires wouldn't need to borrow your credit card. Of course, I'm just speculating.

That said, I remember thinking, why wouldn't he be reaching out to his own family if he needed this help? That should be the red flag. But that's part of the brainwashing. By the time you're taking out the 3rd loan, you're in so deep your brain won't let you see what is so obvious to anyone else who isn't brainwashed by him.

I remember reading his text messages too thinking: “how on earth could anyone fall for this clown?”
It was how he made them feel. He convinced them that he was wealthy and could pay the money back by the way he lavishly spent (other women’s money). He made them feel wonderful, like he was their boyfriend, like they would have a future together. Unlike FB catfish scams, he flew them places and met them in person and created a fake relationship with them so they would believe him. I would like to think I wouldn’t fall for this but I find compassion is better than harsh judgment of these women. The first woman featured even had his ex telling her that he was a good person. Definitely lessons to be learned. Good for them sharing their stories and risking ridicule for the sake of other women who might fall for this type of thing too.

Someone desperate could think maybe he is just not verbally gifted. But hearing his monotone lifeless emotionless voice made me think who could ever fall for that, he was also a bad actor. II left a guy in internet for that, no verbal skills, no emotion in voice.

It was interesting to me how he never gave up his con even when caught. This seems to be a commonality with these con artists. He told more lies to keep it going and then a story of how his enemies hired journalists for a smear campaign. It amazes me how he is able to keep the con going even now! No real repercussions and he’s back on Tinder.

My sister met him on tinder about a month ago. Now she's talking about giving him all her savings because his nephew has been aducted by drug cartels and he needs the money to pay the ransom.

I watched a more in-depth video on this guy. He’s really good at the con. He takes his time. He didn’t just send pics of the “injured bodyguard “ he sent a video of him and the “ bodyguard “ in an ambulance with a paramedic treating the man. Also the first woman didn’t at first believe Simon could possibly be a real profile so she googled the name he gave her. It was backed up as the name of real Simon was in diamond trade , as was his father. So these women were not just idiots … he really put in the work. I’m so glad he was busted. I wish he would get more jail time. These cases are why I could NEVER trust online dating.

I don’t think he ever got convicted for what he did to the women. He went to prison for some other frauds.
Most likely due to the fact the 1st Woman was actively lying to creditors which is also a crime! They were also willingly giving him balance after balance and not once questioning him as these were basically IOU's to a friend!
He did scam them however they actively went along with the scam for a period of time without questioning it as they all believed he was a Billionaire. The fact he was a Billionaire and asking for help should of also been questioned. They didn't and therefore although scammed they actively gave him the money of their own free will as a friend. He had no obligation to pay them back as they lent him the money and never once thought to really question it!

This obsession people have with image today is scary, and it's only been exacerbated by social media platforms like Instagram. Dr. Grande what are the long term ramifications of exposure to this kind of shallow and superficial lifestyle?? Both in terms of body image/ body dysmorphia and wealth management.

Long term ramifications are that the world has become a playground for grifters capitalizing on dreams of billions of potential victims hanging out online every waking moment. It's never been easier to be a criminal. Is it really as easy as tossing a few compliments at a woman and she will give her credit card to you? It's easy to use the same grifting model every day with 3,000 potential victims. I guess all you need is a couple to dive into the delusion and you are in business.

I've run into these dating site scammers before. Their conversations do tend to sound disjointed, they always seem to kind and gentle - until you refuse to give them money. One had the audacity to ask me to beg my dad for money for him. The smart ones just go away when their first attempts fail.

They always call you ‘dear’ which is weird. They claim to be from UK, and English, but their written English is odd, it’s so obvious who they are, sometimes I pay along for a laugh and scam the scammer
The best part of the doc was when he was asking the girl for the money for the high end clothing she said she'd sell for him. Really showed his true colors and how much of a psychopath he was.

I'm wondering if you watched the Tinder Swindler...these women spent time with him (not a lot but they did meet up in person) and they witnessed and experienced expensive hotels, private jets, big parties, and being received at very posh hotels with recognition from the staff with a "Welcome back Mr. Leviev". They were not just photographs and text messages.
All the more reason he wouldn't need to borrow money from a brand new acquaintance.

Of course Simon appears wealthy, especially to ordinary people and the experience would be awesome. Though the moment he asks you for money instead of one of his friends/family is when you should start sensing that it doesn't add up. People pretending to be rich isn't that unheard of.

There are many predators in our world... and many people desperate enough to become their victims.
Apparently, some are even desperate to become a victim. The first woman's best friends told her via text not to get on that plane to Bulgaria, warning her of being sold into sex slavery, and she still did it.
And then because the woman came back home ok she thought "wow, he is a decent guy".
Also, when his "ex" (with their baby) on the plane said "He is a wonderful man and a wonderful father."
That's when she fully began to trust him.
The one thing about this documentary I never understood is why the baby mama, "the body guard" Peter, and his "agent" were all part of it too? Were they getting money? Were they doing it because they loved Simon? Were they doing it because they feared him?

Asking his ex about him while he held her kid, she clearly already had intent on wanting to have a relationship with him. She didn't have to put any effort into the chase as he said what she already wanted to hear after one hour.

Although I feel for the victims and I understand that when people fall in love their rational thinking can go out the window, in this case the superficiality goes both ways. In the same way
that he was extremely shallow, the victims were also shallow. Their motivation to connect with him was primarily based on his “wealth”. Maybe afterwards the feelings of love surfaced but that wasn’t the initial sentiment. This case prompts us to reflect on the motivation behind forming a relationship with someone.
I think physical attraction is a strong point at first, but honestly, there are situations in which a very attractive person begins talking and all of sudden their attractiveness starts to fade due to their profound immaturity. Other times, a not so attractive person starts talking and eventually their attractiveness increase due to their kindness, intelligence and other factors. Obviously everyone is different, that’s just my opinion.

Absolutely. Unfortunately with dating sites, image is everything because that’s precisely how a profile page is constructed: images. This guy knew that and was a genius marketer. I am a somewhat skeptical person naturally so all that mushy love stuff at the outset is a huge red flag for me.

I guess choosing a role where business trips are the norm would help with stringing so many people along. More stress and work than its worth. I'd have a heart attack thinking something would go wrong any minute 😬 I know he's being deceitful, but I can imagine American express still holding the women liable for any funds. They could argue that they weren't prudent enough. So many people use relationships to manipulate someone into bad financial decisions. Many don't say anything because they're ashamed and so people get away with it and their fraud gets hidden. It really ruins people's lives! Yeah, they accused him for personal reasons, you took their personal funds!

I think he was still scamming his last girlfriend Ayleen when he said he was living in a hostel, eating leftover mall food and desperate. The beard was probably grown to allude the police but I don't believe the rest of the sob story. He wanted to "out con" her one last time because he knew she got him and I think that's what flipped him out the most. He was outsmarted.

People with a certain common sense and normal healthy skepticism would not have fallen for this. Getting on a private plane with a complete stranger is not normal. If he's for real, there's no hurry. It's unfortunate that there are individuals completely susceptible to this. Some people have no barometer when dealing with fake people. I think it’s a gambling assessment. If a woman puts herself out there for a normal dude, she might have a boring, passionless domestic life with a guy that no one else reveres, but then again he might be a good husband. If she trust the guy on the yacht, she might wind up being in crushing debt forever, which is pretty normal these days, but she also might also wind up as a 1%er. The problem ends up being how to calculate the probabilities there. She probably saw it as a 50/50 shot when it was probably more like a 1/100,000 shot.
