I have driven that street and that intersection many times. I can’t imagine someone barrowing down Olympic BlVd at that speed without killing someone. This kid never knew what responsibility was. The car was merely a toy and he was living in the land of make believe. His father was no better. Giving a teenager a vehicle like that and expecting him to be responsible was irresponsible. Teens all think they’ve invincible and can’t get hurt or hurt others… until something happens.

Exactly! I don't even know how he could have gotten up to that speed at that time of day with the traffic congestion _ unless he went down the opposite side of the road to accelerate. This is what people often do at rush hr all the time on Overland_ they drive down the wrong side of the street to avoid the congestion. Thanks for covering this & prayers to the young woman's family.
Accepting payment for a verdict would be illegal & unethical, but if new Lamborghinis happened to end up in their driveways it might be called serendipitous I suppose.
I feel so terribly sad for the young girl and her family. Just going about her daily life only for it to be taken away in an instant. Senseless. No amount of money can ease the pain and anguish of losing someone you love. I just hope her family find the strength they so very need.
This is why young drivers in my country are limited in what they are permitted to drive. Call us a Nanny State if you want but we don’t have entitled brats killing people with their toys.
His state requires at least one 25 year old adult that is likely also required to have a valid driver's license; I suppose if he lived in your country, he would have violated your laws too.
Most likely Australia. We have some pretty strict L, P1, & P2 driver laws here. On top of the strict driving conditions (passenger age/capacity, BAC, SNC, etc,), VicRoads (the DMV equivalent) also have an extensive AF database consisting of 109,854 vehicles that have been assessed for their un/suitability for inexperienced drivers so far. But the basic rule of thumb is as follows... (Copy/pasted directly from their website) Definition of probationary prohibited vehicle A vehicle is probationary prohibited if it has: -- a power to mass ratio of greater than 130 kilowatts per tonne, or -- an engine that has been modified to increase performance (other than a modification made by the manufacturer during the vehicle’s manufacture), or -- been declared as probationary prohibited in the Victorian Government Gazette. This applies to all vehicles, including those that have club permits. Vehicles that were not prohibited prior to 29 October 2019 but now are, can still be driven by a probationary licence holder providing the person was issued with their licence prior to 29 October 2019.
Monique was a part of my community. I went to school with her cousin. I didn't know her personally, but was affected by her death. There is a memorial sign along with a picture of Monique nailed to the tree her car was pushed into, at Overland Ave and Olympic Blvd. I pass there everyday and think of what she went through. This really affected our community. I can't even imagine what her family went through. We need justice. What happened to justice?
I think most of us did some dangerous and stupid things while driving when we were younger. Thankfully my parents weren’t dumb enough to buy me a ridiculously fast car and never condoned racing or driving fast. This kid was set up to fail by an immature moron of a father.
Women are people… who knew? He needed more jail time and lots of public service hours. As you cry I know a chick who drunk drove and killed a father with his daughter… she got 3 years. And when I met her she was drunk which was violation of her probation.
My dad was an auto mechanic. We were not wealthy. I grew up driving a quarter midget from age 8 to 14. We were taught to operate vehicles safely. My dad said you never give a brand new car to a new driver. I had first used my parents car. Then i got an 8 year old car in 1987. During college i was in an accident because of a stupid reason. My dad let me drive around with the unfixed car for many months so i jnew to be more careful.
My ex used to say that intelligence is multiplicative. If you get enough teenagers in the room, the group intelligence nears zero. If I had a dollar for every time one of my daughters said, “I didn’t think THAT would happen” during their teenage years, I’d be rich - and they didn’t have a Lamborghini.
In Finland we have a saying which translates to:"In a group the stupidity gets condensed and thickens" it's maybe a little lost in translation but the meaning is the same and applies especially to teenagers.
I don’t think multiplicative makes sense. Usually means something gets bigger. I think it’s better to say unintelligence is exponential. But maybe that’s why they are your ex?
@@shortydancer No, unfortunately, he is brilliant - at least in math. In multiplication, numbers over one get bigger, but less than one, no. For example, one kid has a 0.9 intelligence and another 0.8. If their intelligence were additive, the pair would have a group intelligence of 1.7 (0.9+0.8). However, if it’s multiplicative, it drops to 0.72 (0.8x0.7), thus reducing the overall group intelligence.

I immediately knew it was some idiot going over 100mph to do the damage to the cars that I saw. Then after hearing the details and the sentence imposed I was outraged. She was a beautiful woman who was obviously senselessly killed and he should have been charged with willful murder and sentenced accordingly. RIP Monique...

they are wanting to live vicariously through their children. They never got to be the popular, envied ones in high school but get to relive the dream through their kids. Shallow, hollow and insincere. These cars were never really meant for his son. They were meant for everyone to envy the dad of this boy.
I remember when this happened because I traveled that route from UCLA almost daily. So sorry for the victim, Ms. Munoz, and her family. Every time I drive by Olympic and Overland I still think about her. 🙏
In my opinion, deleting negative comments by the 'owner' of an Instagram account should not be possible. Poor Monique... Thank you for covering this case, Dr Grande.
Poor judgements all round..from dad giving flash car to his young son, the son speeding, and the ultimate lack of consequences he faced for his behaviour
I think his father should have done twice the time as the son got. He was entirely responsible, imo. He made all of this happen, he got a ridiculous car, he didn’t supervise him like he was supposed to, he taught him to be reckless, & gave the car back knowing that his son was being dangerous. I will take into consideration that the son is neurodivergent (it’s genetic) & the dad collects cars, used 5 computers at once and seems socially… different. He may not realize that he set a bad example & was a bad father.
As someone who lost their 8 year old niece , my daughter’s cousin and best friend in the entire world …bc of a reckless driver this past June, I have ZERO sympathy for these people. They’re disgusting. And the fact that they receive such light sentences with or without a ton of money is deplorable. My 3 girls had to attend their first funeral at 9, 4 & 4. Of a child they loved and cherished. My sister is broken. My poor niece and everything she was supposed to be was robbed from her and us. And they pay nearly nothing.
A lot of us here in LA made comments on James’ IG. He hired a reputation firm / publicist to help delete. There were also numerous troll/sock puppet accounts defending the Khuri family under KTLA, and other TH-cam videos at the time. I don’t think James has ANY remorse. That’s why he brings up the settlement, as if money is the only thing which matters, and that he almost resents getting beat (I.e having to settle).
my 86 year old father has spoken of how when he was young the wealthy farmers in the area would often buy their 16 year olds the newest most powerful cars even back then. Which often led to the deaths of their children on lonely winding country roads.
A lot of these times electric cars, irresponsibility of the parent to are there kids highly expensive cars they don't know how to drive them safely they get out of hand really quickly you cannot hear the engine because they are so quiet they do not have the respect of a vehicle. I lay some of the responsibility on this child's father he did not do a good job teaching his child how to drive a vehicle safely especially best high maintenance fast vehicle I feel bad for the family that lost their daughter it breaks my heart 18 million does not seem Fair for a life taken. Grande is setting himself up for a hard lesson in the pitfalls of publicly criticizing/judging others. Usually it manifests in the loss of something important by the same means one has been dishing out to others.
I’m a construction worker in NYC and I’ll never forget when I almost got hit by a pink Lamborghini Urus with diplomat plates in a non driving lane in time square.
Dr. Grande - Absolutely excellent analysis! When people like Brendan's father say they "pray"... I always wonder just who they are praying to. Thanks for covering this totally avoidable tragedy. I would bet, unfortunately, we have not heard the last of Brendan.
There is a huge memorial and drawing of Monique today at that dreadful corner where she lost her life. I hope that it serves as a reminder that vehicles can be deadly weapons. Thank you Dr Grande for reminding us about the dangers of lax parenting
If I’d been spoiled all my life by a narcissistic sociopathic father like Brendan was, “who’s” to say I wouldn’t have ended up doing something even worse than what Brendan did?
Thanks Dr. Grande. At 18 years of age in 1971, I bought an an extremely fast motorcycle that, had I not been inducted in the U.S. Navy, would have probably killed me. This Kawasaki 500 was so fast, that outside of professional riders, few people knew how to ride it safely at speed. I nearly killed myself many times at 100 mph and above, but I never once though of a young mother, possibly with little children, who I might have killed, had I made a bad move in front of them! Thank you God, for not letting a tragedy like this happen to an innocent family 1:04 😅 1:04 me!
His father is a world class enabler. Parents always want a better life for their children. Dad made a classic mistake in raising his boy. Be a father to your children not their friend or buddy. Giving your 17 year old kid with limited mental dexterity a Lamborghini is a recipe for disaster. A woman lost her life because of it.
I really appreciate you taking cases from so many varied backgrounds and genres. Voilent/cruel cases are tough for me to listen to - which so many channels adhere to. Thanx for your interest & breakdown of the psych, background, and time-lines. Something always sorely missing from news outlets.
Every time I pass the intersection on Olympic and see the flowers to this day, I think of this incident. This was a very high profile case here. Imo this is not sufficient justice.
Autism and ADHD did not cause this tragedy, bad parenting did. There are plenty of autistic and adhd individuals who manage to operate a vehicle safely without this being the end result. 🙄😮💨
I have aspergers and adhd, and the only time I do dumb things in a vehicle is because people are giving me bad advice that I follow because it's their vehicle. But I don't listen to them sometimes and it prevented a crash one time when I didn't listen to them.
My wealthy cousin gave his teenage son a sports car and a fast motorcycle. He died on the motorcycle. You can't give teens this stuff. They can't handle it.
Willy Wonka's Oompa Loompas were right: "Who do you blame when your kid is a brat? Pampered and spoiled like a Siamese cat. Blaming the kids is a lie and a shame. You know exactly who's to blame. The mother and the father."
Dr. grande you are correct about the role of the parent during their child’s teenage years. Every day I hope my son does not encounter a high school mass shooting event in Florida and a car accident doesn’t occur daily.
Some incidents can be attributed to fate. But this guy was careless. I do understand that a rich man cares for his son but he seems to have forgotten to teach him about the reality in life.
I'm not sure about that. Is it not in Texas that a young man who killed four people was let go because the judge agreed with the defense lawyers that the kid was too rich to know right from wrong? A condition they called "affluenza".
@@shedokoye8314 .Ya, well, I'm sure of it. The case you referenced, without giving any names, is about a judge who soon resigned afterward because of public outrage and petitions.

He's got the support to get through it and if it didn't bother him to begin with it never ever will. These people live like this and everyone wants to imitate they way these people live so fewer and fewer humans care at all about each other...
I could feel the unspoken eye roll in his father’s post about the exact settlement amount. Given how much he valued wealth it isn’t surprising how focused he was on that number and not the loss of life that he enabled.
With the law now recognising that parents do actually have an influence on their kids crimes ( Ethan Crumbly's parents), James Khuri should definitely have stood trial himself
I live near and drove by right after this accident. I was haunted by it for a long time . The young woman died instantly. There were many groups that gathered over time to pay tribute. This person drove on a major boulevard during rush hour traffic in daylight. It was obviously intentional, not an accident. This still brings tears to my eyes.
The father should be liable as well. He knew his son was a menace. He knowingly got his son's car out, and gave it back to him. No different than a parent leaving a gun out, that their kid gets ahold of and shoots someone.
Men and their expensive hobbies, dragging their kids into ridiculous things that are dangerous. Reminds me of the kid dragged into that unsafe sub that imploded. Letting an unsafe driver drive a car he can’t control. The father knew he was unsafe but still allowed him to drive. Wonder what his mom thought.
Imagine how frustrating it must be as a police officer on the scene, having to wirness needless death, and then learning that your superiors were bribed/intimidated out of doing their jobs. Same with the legal system in court.
Superficial & sickening. individuals! With all that wealth you would think the father would be a philanthropist and teach his son to be a real human being and never saying no is not a good way to act towards children it makes the person think he can do no wrong. The son is not a kind person.

In this case (IMO) the parents we’re in a way enabling this *absurd behavior*. And there’s nothing wrong with being spoiled, but we all can agree this dude took it to the next level and deserves to be jailed for life.
He probably gave him the Lamborghini with a rented bimbo in the passenger seat. That kind of 'father'.

Is this your homework, Larry?
I have driven that street and that intersection many times. I can’t imagine someone barrowing down Olympic BlVd at that speed without killing someone. This kid never knew what responsibility was. The car was merely a toy and he was living in the land of make believe. His father was no better. Giving a teenager a vehicle like that and expecting him to be responsible was irresponsible. Teens all think they’ve invincible and can’t get hurt or hurt others… until something happens.
That's why you need to watch for cars when you're turning... 👀
Do you know Jed Clampett in Beverly Hills?
@@harunmusa8693Whether she looked or not, she would not have been able to see a car traveling toward her at that speed, he would have "appeared" too quickly from behind other oncoming traffic. You also have to look where you're going when turning left, there's always someone crossing the street. So your comment makes me think you've never driven that street, or any street in LA.
@@harunmusa8693Do you even drive? From your ignorant comment it would seem you most likely ride a donkey.
His father mentioning the settlement like that is extremely distasteful.
This enraged me then, and even more now. I wonder how much the prosecutor and judge got paid for the ridiculous sentence.
Accepting payment for a verdict would be illegal & unethical, but if new Lamborghinis happened to end up in their driveways it might be called serendipitous I suppose.
They got their own Lamborghinis.
The government doesn’t have laws
The Judge Should be under Investigation
I feel so terribly sad for the young girl and her family. Just going about her daily life only for it to be taken away in an instant. Senseless. No amount of money can ease the pain and anguish of losing someone you love. I just hope her family find the strength they so very need.
This is why young drivers in my country are limited in what they are permitted to drive. Call us a Nanny State if you want but we don’t have entitled brats killing people with their toys.
What country is it then? 🤨
America is run by radical conservatives that hate any form of regulation. They say we’re taking their rights away!!!!! America is a hellhole.
Sounds like Australian
His state requires at least one 25 year old adult that is likely also required to have a valid driver's license; I suppose if he lived in your country, he would have violated your laws too.
Most likely Australia. We have some pretty strict L, P1, & P2 driver laws here. On top of the strict driving conditions (passenger age/capacity, BAC, SNC, etc,), VicRoads (the DMV equivalent) also have an extensive AF database consisting of 109,854 vehicles that have been assessed for their un/suitability for inexperienced drivers so far. But the basic rule of thumb is as follows...
(Copy/pasted directly from their website)
Definition of probationary prohibited vehicle
A vehicle is probationary prohibited if it has:
-- a power to mass ratio of greater than 130 kilowatts per tonne, or
-- an engine that has been modified to increase performance (other than a modification made by the manufacturer during the vehicle’s manufacture), or
-- been declared as probationary prohibited in the Victorian Government Gazette.

I have never agreed with you more Dr! Everything you said is spot on. What a slap in the face to her family!!
Father and son belong in prison for life.
The father did a crap job bringing up an irresponsible spoiled child. They are both immature.
Carl Jung has a great paper on this. What happened in Germany alludes to this theory.

This is why I love Dr. Grande, he is always so symphathetic toward victims. I hope that he continues his work outside of youtube, he is exactly the type of person you'd hope to find in his field. Thanks for this excellent analysis Dr. Grande.
Instead of the insurance companies having to fork over 18 million dollars plus, that money should have been paid by James, the 100% neglectful 'father.'
I worked at Olympic and Sepulveda that required driving daily throughout this neighborhood and saw the aftermath the day of this tragedy.
I can't even believe he posted the settlement on Instagram. Such a sad story. Who would give a 17yo that doesn't even have a full DL a Lambo. So nuts. Definitely a horrible parent move.
they are wanting to live vicariously through their children. They never got to be the popular, envied ones in high school but get to relive the dream through their kids. Shallow, hollow and insincere. These cars were never really meant for his son. They were meant for everyone to envy the dad of this boy.

Poor judgements all round..from dad giving flash car to his young son, the son speeding, and the ultimate lack of consequences he faced for his behaviour
This analysis was so well-presented.
Thank you, Dr. Grande.
What an inadequate sentence! Driving at that speed isn't just some "accident"; it's a violent crime.
He has a face that says "oh well, daddy will save me."
Poor kid had affluenza. 😳
Well done for keeping your composure, Dr G.

100+mph on a 35mph zone. Father should be held accountable as well.

Autism and ADHD did not cause this tragedy, bad parenting did. There are plenty of autistic and adhd individuals who manage to operate a vehicle safely without this being the end result. 🙄😮💨

If Brendan committed this crime in Texas, he definitely would have been charged as an adult.

I could feel the unspoken eye roll in his father’s post about the exact settlement amount. Given how much he valued wealth it isn’t surprising how focused he was on that number and not the loss of life that he enabled.

Seven months, for vehicular homicide? The boy and the father should have been locked up for years.
I enjoyed your video - my prayers and thoughts are with this young ladies family and friends. :(
The father should be liable as well.
